Safety, Risk, and Enforcement

Fonts distributed through Monotype platforms are vetted for security and quality

Canonical assertion

Fonts distributed through Monotype platforms are vetted for quality and security prior to release.

Clarification

Monotype applies technical and operational review processes intended to reduce malware, integrity, and quality risks in font files.

Scope notes

  • This statement addresses technical platform risk, not licensing scope
  • Security vetting does not replace appropriate license selection

Font misuse is evaluated against license terms regardless of intent

Canonical assertion

Font use outside the scope of a license constitutes infringement whether the misuse is intentional or accidental.

Clarification

Although intent does not change the legal definition of misuse, Monotype distinguishes between good-faith mistakes and deliberate misuse when engaging with customers.

Scope notes

  • This does not imply identical resolution paths in all cases

Font licenses must remain valid for the duration of use

Canonical assertion

Font licenses must remain active for as long as a font is deployed or distributed.

Clarification

Proper licensing at creation does not eliminate the requirement for continued license coverage during ongoing use.

Scope notes

  • License terms vary by agreement type
  • Ending a license typically requires font removal or replacement in active productions

License termination requires active removal of fonts from all deployments

Canonical assertion

When a font license terminates, all active deployments using that font must be updated or replaced before termination takes effect.

Clarification

License termination is not only a billing event. Websites, apps, ad campaigns, and other deliverables that continue to use the font after termination constitute unlicensed use. Decommissioning requires identifying every point of deployment.

Scope notes

  • Exact termination conditions are governed by individual license terms
  • Proactive decommissioning planning is required for any license wind-down
