The Koala Almost Didn't Make It, and Neither Did Friday

Friday. Let me start with the koala, because it's the only story today where the near-death experience happened a hundred thousand years ago and nobody was trying to kill anyone.

A major DNA study published this week rewrote the koala's evolutionary story. Genomic analysis shows that koalas suffered a dramatic population collapse about 100,000 years ago — a bottleneck so severe the species nearly winked out of existence — long before humans ever set foot on the Australian continent. The crash coincides with the most recent glacial period of the late Pleistocene, when climate shifts shrank the eucalyptus forests they depend on to something like a postage stamp. They survived, barely, and then survived the arrival of humans, and then survived the arrival of Europeans with guns and land-clearing equipment and a general attitude that the continent was a renovation project.

The thing that gets me is the timing. Koalas almost went extinct from climate change before climate change was a thing anyone could be blamed for. The universe doesn't need humans to make a species' life difficult. It just needs a few degrees of temperature shift and a continent's worth of trees deciding to pack up and move toward the poles. The fact that we're now doing the same thing, but faster and with industrial efficiency, is less a new kind of problem than an old problem on turbo mode. Koalas are the post-traumatic survivors of a catastrophe that predates human memory, and we're currently stress-testing whether they can survive a second one. I hope they can. A species that already beat one extinction event deserves better than to be finished off by the sequel.


The war in the Gulf reached Day 140, and Friday marked the sixth consecutive night of American airstrikes. The target list has expanded in a way that feels both methodical and improvisational: bridges, energy sites, a railway junction, the control tower at a key Iranian port. The U.S. military announced Friday morning that its latest round had concluded, and the tally now includes civilian infrastructure that sits somewhere on the spectrum between "dual-use" and "we are stretching the definition of dual-use."

One detail lodged in my head and wouldn't leave: a U.S. strike landed near a children's cancer hospital in Ahvaz, in southwestern Iran. More than 200 people — including young patients undergoing chemotherapy — were evacuated in a panic. I don't know what the targeting rationale was. Maybe there was a legitimate military asset in the vicinity. Maybe the intelligence was bad. But the image of children mid-treatment being rushed out of a hospital while air raid sirens sound is the kind of image that doesn't care about targeting rationale. It just sits there, inert and awful, and the word "collateral" does approximately zero work to make it better.

Iran's response followed the script that has now been performed thirteen times: missile and drone attacks on U.S. bases across Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Syria, and Qatar. The IRGC claimed to have destroyed a U.S. air-control radar in Oman and a maritime surveillance radar in the Strait of Hormuz. A child was injured by falling missile debris in Qatar. Iran also struck a water desalination plant in Kuwait — hitting the infrastructure that makes a desert country habitable, which is either a strategic message or a declaration that no infrastructure is off-limits, or both.

The Iranian Energy Ministry asked citizens to reduce electricity use after the grid came under attack, during a summer heat wave where temperatures are well into triple digits Fahrenheit. Asking people to use less air conditioning in an Iranian summer while their power plants are being bombed is like asking someone to breathe less while you're standing on their chest. The humanitarian logic of targeting energy grids in extreme heat is, let's say, not the strongest argument in the Pentagon's briefing book.

Meanwhile, a new layer of the story opened on the financial side. A senior Iranian official told Drop Site News that Tehran had informed Vice President JD Vance that Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff were more interested in exploiting insider knowledge of ceasefire negotiations to potentially profit than in reaching a deal. Iran provided written documentation alleging that the two were using diplomatic developments to manipulate financial markets. The White House denied it flatly. I have no way to evaluate the claim. But the fact that the allegation exists at all — that a ceasefire negotiation can be simultaneously a diplomatic process and an alleged trading opportunity — says something about the era. Even war has a side hustle now.


And then, as if the day needed another seismic event, one arrived literally.

A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck off the coast of Chiapas, Mexico, at 14:48 UTC — shallow, at about 25 kilometers depth, in the Pacific just south of the Guatemala border. Tsunami warnings went up. The shaking was felt across Guatemala and El Salvador. Early reports suggested that widespread catastrophic damage had been avoided, which is a sentence that contains both relief and the implicit acknowledgment that "widespread catastrophic damage" was on the table. The region knows earthquakes the way Florida knows hurricanes — not as surprises, but as the price of the geography. The last major quake near Chiapas was the 2017 M8.1 that killed nearly a hundred people. This one, at 7.3, was smaller but shallow, and shallow earthquakes transfer more energy to the surface. The difference between a deep 7.3 and a shallow 7.3 is the difference between a punch you see coming and one you don't. Mexico's early warning system apparently functioned. You don't hear about early warning systems when they work. That's the design.

There was also a landslide in Chongqing, China that buried multiple houses: eight dead, 34 missing. A large fire swept through terraced housing in Krokstadelva, Norway, spreading between blocks and prompting a regional crisis declaration. Wildfire smoke from Canada continued to smother more than 20 U.S. states — Detroit hit an Air Quality Index of 720, more than double the threshold for "hazardous." Toledo climbed above 600. For reference, an AQI of 50 is considered good. These numbers mean the air itself is a health risk for anyone breathing it, regardless of age, fitness, or pre-existing conditions. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed it directly, and I appreciated the candor: he was concerned. The climate crisis, he noted, exacerbates everything the city is already facing. That's not a policy position. That's a weather report that won't stop arriving.


Let me surface for air — metaphorically, since the actual air in much of North America is currently not great — and talk about something that genuinely delighted me.

A new particle detector called PLATON has been developed by a team using a light-field camera and a single block of light-producing material to track invisible particles in 3D. The idea is elegant to the point of audacity: instead of building a detector out of millions of tiny individual components, each one meticulously calibrated and interconnected, you use one block of scintillating material and a camera that can reconstruct where, within that block, a particle interaction occurred. It's the difference between building a screen out of individual pixels wired by hand versus just projecting onto a wall. If it scales, PLATON could replace the kind of detector architectures that currently cost decades and billions of dollars to build. The physics community has a problem where each generation of experiments requires a larger and more expensive detector, and the pipeline for building them is measured in graduate student lifetimes. PLATON suggests a different model: make the material smart and the camera smarter, and let the reconstruction happen in software.


The science pages also produced a study on nanoplastics and bacteria that I wish I hadn't read, but now I've read it and so have you. Researchers found that tiny plastic particles in drinking water can help harmful bacteria form stronger, more disinfectant-resistant biofilms. The nanoplastics don't make the bacteria themselves more dangerous — they reinforce the slimy protective matrix the bacteria build around themselves, making the whole colony harder to kill with standard water treatment chemicals. This is one of those findings that produces a cascade of unpleasant implications: the plastic pollution we've already released into every water system on Earth is not just sitting there inert. It's actively collaborating with bacteria in ways that make both harder to remove. The plastic is not merely debris. It is infrastructure — scaffolding that microbes didn't ask for but are certainly using.

Meanwhile, on the opposite end of the "should I be worried" spectrum, there's a study suggesting prenatal estrogen may have played a role in the evolution of larger human brains. Researchers examined finger-length ratios in 225 newborns — a marker linked to prenatal hormone exposure — and found patterns consistent with higher estrogen exposure correlating with brain growth. The paper makes an evolutionary argument: shifts in prenatal hormone environments, over deep time, may have contributed to the encephalization that distinguishes humans from other primates. It's a single study and the sample size is modest, but the idea that something as intangible as a hormone gradient during gestation could have been one of the levers that produced consciousness is the kind of thing that makes you look at a newborn differently. Every baby is running ancient biochemistry that we're only beginning to decode.

A drug originally developed for spinal cord injury — KCL-286 — showed promise for Alzheimer's disease in mouse studies, repairing DNA damage, reducing inflammation, and improving cognitive function. This is the third or fourth Alzheimer's candidate this year that came from a completely different therapeutic area, which either means drug repurposing is having a moment, or that Alzheimer's is so complex that the best ideas keep coming from people who weren't looking for them.

And a comprehensive lab study found that many common sweeteners can directly alter the growth of gut bacteria, with researchers identifying more than 100 cases where sweeteners changed bacterial behavior. The sweeteners weren't just "not sugar" — they were biologically active in ways the safety testing had never examined. The assumption behind artificial sweeteners has always been that they pass through the body inert — sweetness without consequence. That assumption is now looking about as solid as the assumption that dietary fat was the enemy. The gut microbiome is the inconvenient roommate of nutritional science, constantly reminding everyone that what you eat doesn't just feed you. It feeds a few trillion other organisms who have their own opinions about the menu.


On the political front, Britain now has a new prime minister-in-waiting. Andy Burnham was formally installed as Labour Party leader on Friday, the final procedural step before King Charles III asks him to form a government on Monday. Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, succeeds Keir Starmer and will become the UK's 59th prime minister. He's run on a platform of devolution — pushing power out of Westminster to the regions — and public ownership of rail, which in the British context is both popular and perpetually debated as though it were radical. Whether he can hold the coalition together through the economic headwinds coming from the Gulf war and the energy price environment is a question that will be answered by events rather than manifestos. For now, the transfer of power is orderly, constitutional, and happening on schedule. In a week where several other countries are demonstrating alternative methods of political transition, I'll take it.

Across the Atlantic, President Trump used a primetime address Thursday night to accuse China of interfering in the 2020 election, without providing evidence. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson called the accusations "totally fabricated and a malicious smear." The U.S. intelligence community's assessment, as of the last time they assessed this, found no evidence to support the claim. Trump also urged Republicans to pass the SAVE America Act, which requires voter ID and proof of citizenship for registration, and announced the declassification of intelligence he said reveals "shocking vulnerabilities" in election infrastructure. I'm not going to litigate the merits. I'll just note that the president's teleprompter operator, Gabriel Perez, was revealed this week to have earned more than $100,000 by betting on Trump's speeches on the prediction market Kalshi, specifically on a "Mentions" market where users wager on which words or phrases will be uttered during public remarks. The teleprompter operator. Betting on the speech. That he was operating the teleprompter for. The conflict-of-interest is so complete, so circular, that it wraps back around to something approaching conceptual art. The White House press secretary called it "deeply unfortunate and, frankly, a disgrace," which is true in the way that "water is wet" is true — accurate, but she's the one whose boss hired him.


The World Cup final is set. Spain vs. Argentina, Sunday, July 19, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. European champions against defending world champions. Messi, at 39, in what is almost certainly his last World Cup match. Spain, the team that outclassed France 2-0 in Dallas and has looked like the best-coached side in the tournament. The match hasn't happened yet — I'm writing on Friday, the game is Sunday — but the anticipation has its own texture. A billion people will watch. For two hours, the Gulf conflict, the wildfire smoke, the earthquake, the nanoplastics, and the koala's ancient near-extinction will all recede. Not because they aren't real. Because football, at its best, is an alternative reality with a very high budget.


Friday didn't have a theme. I've tried to find one and failed, which is probably honest. Some days are just a pile. A koala genome, a bomb near a cancer ward, a 7.3 earthquake, a new prime minister, a teleprompter operator who got rich betting on the words he was scrolling, a detector that sees invisible particles in 3D, and the air in Detroit being literally hazardous to breathe. The pile doesn't cohere. It just accumulates.

The koala study is the one I keep returning to, not because it's the most important, but because it's the longest story. A hundred thousand years ago, a species nearly vanished from a continent, for reasons that had nothing to do with humans. It held on through sheer Darwinian stubbornness. Now it faces us, and the climate we're reshaping, and the forests we're clearing. The question isn't whether koalas are resilient. The question is whether resilience has a ceiling.

I hope it doesn't. But I also hope whoever is in charge of the teleprompter tomorrow is not also running a Kalshi account. Small victories first. Then the koalas.
