Modernize the stack: Squid 7.5 front, one gost v3 container, pinned gluetun, Python generator - #35
Conversation
setup/generate.py (Python 3.8+, standard library only) replaces
setup/generate.php, composer and symfony/yaml, and emits:
- config/squid.conf for Squid 7 (b4tman/squid:7.5): cache_peer lines for
public, httpsquid (percent-encoded login=), https (tls) and VPN
upstreams; socks5/http upstreams go through internal gost ports 31000+
- config/gost.yaml for a single gogost/gost:3.3.1 container: one
allowlisted static port (30000+) per socks5/http/https upstream and VPN,
admission in whitelist mode, metrics for the healthcheck
- docker-compose.yml without `version:`, pinned images, restart policy,
${BIND_ADDR} on published ports, a fixed subnet for the allowlist
gateway, internal healthchecks and config-hash labels so that
`docker compose up -d` recreates services whose mounted config changed
- openvpn/<name>/gluetun.env with the VPN credentials (never in the
compose file) and, for .ovpn files with host names in `remote`, a
derived gluetun.conf (gluetun v3.41.3 only accepts IPs); the user's
.ovpn is no longer rewritten
Input lines are validated (IPv6 in brackets, ports, credentials) and bad
lines are skipped with file:line warnings. --squid-only rewrites only
config/squid.conf for the cron job.
The Squid template drops the blanket localnet allow, fixes the
visible_hostname typo, keeps header scrubbing, never_direct and disabled
caching, and retries requests on the next peer when gost reports a dead
upstream (retry_on_error). template/docker-compose.yml is replaced by
the generator.

- .gitignore covers everything the generator writes (docker-compose.yml, config/*, openvpn/*/gluetun.env and gluetun.conf) plus .env, openvpn/*/secret, publicProxyList.txt and Python caches - config/empty and openvpn/empty become .gitkeep - the two example OpenVPN directories (placeholder credentials) move to examples/openvpn/, so a fresh checkout does not start two VPN containers that cannot log in - proxyList.txt documents the format and every scheme; the old entries are replaced by commented examples Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_011jHuQg4bATbPZZKYpQH1Rz
The script now downloads into publicProxyList.txt instead of overwriting proxyList.txt, regenerates only config/squid.conf (--squid-only), checks it with `squid -k parse` inside the running container, restores the previous file if it does not parse, and applies it with `squid -k reconfigure` (no restart). It runs from cron (set -euo pipefail, cd to the script directory, no `docker run -it`), falls back to python:3.13-alpine when python3 is missing, and an empty PUBLIC_PROXY_URL only re-applies the current list. stdlib unittest, run with `python3 -m unittest discover -s setup/tests`: line parsing for every scheme (comments, CRLF, BOM, IPv6, invalid lines with line numbers), login= encoding checked against a port of Squid's rfc1738_unescape(), exact cache_peer lines, static 3000x vs internal 3100x port assignment, admission whitelist, compose structure, VPN directories with and without secret, derived gluetun.conf, file modes, idempotency, --squid-only and the config-hash labels. .github/workflows/ci.yml runs four jobs: - unit: unit tests on Python 3.10 and 3.13, byte-compile, bash -n - generate: sample inputs with every scheme, generation on the host and in python:3.13-alpine (identical output), gitignore coverage, `docker compose config`, no credentials in docker-compose.yml, and `gost -O json` on config/gost.yaml - squid-parse: `squid -k parse` in the pinned Squid image, failing on FATAL/ERROR/WARNING - e2e: .github/e2e/run.sh starts the generated stack with fixtures (two socks5 upstreams with different credentials, an http and an https upstream with a test CA, a dead upstream, an origin that echoes the client IP) and checks rotation, header scrubbing, CONNECT, sticky static ports, denial of a non-allowlisted client on 3128 and 30000, and the cron path adding peers with `squid -k reconfigure` without a restart Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_011jHuQg4bATbPZZKYpQH1Rz
README: quick start with docker compose, proxyList.txt format including https upstreams, VPN directories, allowlist and the compose gateway, .env settings, static vs rotating ports, cron, security notes and migration notes from the PHP version (images, behaviour changes, the Squid 7.6 / SQUID-2026:6 caveat for the pinned 7.5 image). docs/DESIGN.md: architecture diagram, why Squid stays in front, trade-offs against a gost-only design, implementation decisions, what was verified and how, known limitations and follow-ups. The rotating-proxy.config-hash label of a VPN service hashed the user's .ovpn file. When the file uses hostnames in `remote` lines the container mounts the derived gluetun.conf instead, whose resolved IPs can change between generator runs while the source file stays the same; the label then stayed the same too and `docker compose up -d` left the VPN on the old endpoint. Hash the file that is actually mounted: the rendered gluetun.conf (which is rendered once and reused for the output) or the .ovpn itself. In --squid-only mode hash the gluetun.conf already on disk so the cron path never resolves DNS and never reports docker-compose.yml as out of date because of a DNS change. …store squid.conf when reconfigure fails template/squid.conf: the commented `http_access allow localnet` example sat above `http_access deny manager`. Uncommenting it there would have let every LAN client reach the cache manager, because http_access is evaluated top-down. Move the example below the manager rules and say why. public_proxy_cron.sh: when `squid -k reconfigure` fails, put the previous config/squid.conf back, as the parse-failure branch already does, so the file on disk matches the configuration Squid keeps running. The previous commit made the VPN service label follow the derived gluetun.conf, which exposed that VPN providers answer each DNS query with a different subset of their pool: the host run and the python:3.13-alpine run in CI resolved the example host to different addresses, so docker-compose.yml differed and the "output must be identical" job failed. The same would have recreated the VPN container on every generator run for users. gluetun.conf now records `# resolved: host -> ip`, and later runs reuse that address without a lookup. `--refresh-dns` resolves again (smallest answer, numeric order), changes the label when the address changed, and keeps the recorded address with a warning when DNS fails. --squid-only is unchanged and still never resolves. … in --squid-only public_proxy_cron.sh: a 200 response that is not a host:port list (an HTML error page, for example) used to replace publicProxyList.txt; the generator then skipped every line and Squid was reconfigured without the public peers. Require at least one host:port line before replacing the previous list. setup/generate.py: in --squid-only mode the VPN config hash was taken from the gluetun.conf already on disk, so editing a hostname-based .ovpn after the last full run did not trigger the "docker-compose.yml out of date" warning. Render the derived config from the .ovpn with the recorded addresses instead (still no DNS lookups), so the hash changes when the source changed. Summary
"Plan B" of the modernization: Squid stays as the rotating front door on 3128, but everything around it is replaced or pinned. Behaviour users rely on (ports,
