Boardoza VNH7070AS Motor Driver Breakout Board

The Boardoza VNH7070AS Motor Driver Breakout Board is a high-performance DC motor driver built around the STMicroelectronics VNH7070AS automotive grade full-bridge motor driver IC. It provides reliable bidirectional DC motor control with PWM speed regulation, integrated current sensing, and advanced diagnostic feedback, making it suitable for both embedded development and demanding industrial environments.

Designed for operation from 4V to 28V, the board supports PWM frequencies up to 20 kHz and incorporates comprehensive protection features including thermal shutdown, undervoltage protection, current limitation, and short-circuit protection. Although the VNH7070AS is capable of higher internal peak currents, this breakout board is optimized for continuous motor currents up to 5A to ensure stable operation and effective thermal performance. The board is well suited for robotics, automotive electronics, industrial automation, battery-powered vehicles, and general-purpose DC motor control applications.

Real-World Current and Thermal Considerations

The VNH7070AS motor driver IC is specified by STMicroelectronics with a 15A output current rating. However, this is an IC-level rating and should not be interpreted as the continuous current capability of the Boardoza breakout board. The actual current capability depends on PCB heat dissipation, ambient temperature, airflow, PWM duty cycle, motor load, wiring, and operating duration.

In our tests, operation at 5A resulted in a rapid temperature rise. Therefore, operation near 5A should be limited to short-duration loads. For extended operation, use a lower motor current and verify the board temperature under the actual operating conditions of the application. Additional cooling may improve thermal performance, but the board should always be tested with the intended motor, supply voltage, PWM settings, and enclosure.

Motor startup and stall currents can be significantly higher than the normal running current. The motor, power supply, wiring, connectors, and protection components should be selected with these transient current levels in mind.

⚠️ Warning: The motor driver IC and PCB can become hot enough to cause burns during high-current operation. Do not rely on the IC’s thermal shutdown protection as a normal operating limit. Allow the board to cool before handling it.
