Summary

getstream.video.rtc no longer implements the WebRTC transport with aiortc. The
Rust Video SDK (stream-video-rust)
now does the coordinator join, the SFU selection, the SFU signaling, the peer
connections, the retries and the reconnects. The new package getstream-rtc
(import name getstream_rtc) wraps the SDK with PyO3.

rtc.join() and ConnectionManager stay the public API. ConnectionManager is
now a thin layer: it starts the SDK join, emits the SDK events under the
existing event names, and copies the frames of aiortc tracks into the SDK.

This is a breaking change. migration.md lists every change compared with
6.1.1. This description gives the changes in behavior.

Loading
  • ConnectionManager makes a getstream_rtc.Client from the API key and the
secret (or the token) of the AsyncStream client.
  • The SDK runs on its own tokio runtime. Its async methods are awaitable from
asyncio. Its synchronous methods release the GIL.
  • ConnectionManager opens the event streams and the track stream before the
join, so the events and the tracks of the join are kept.
  • Rust log records go through a bounded queue. Only the forwarding thread takes
the GIL. A log call never blocks. The first connect() starts the
forwarding thread; an import starts no thread.

Changes in behavior

Join, state and leave

  • The SDK retries the join and chooses the SFU. The max_join_retries
argument is removed. rtc.join() accepts only create and
subscription_config; other keyword arguments raise TypeError.
  • connection_state returns CallingState (IDLE, JOINING, JOINED,
RECONNECTING, MIGRATING, RECONNECTING_FAILED, LEFT) and is read only.
CallingState is not an Enum: its members have no name or value and
cannot be hashed or iterated. Compare with the members.
connection.state_changed keeps its name and its {"old", "new"} payload.
After a failed connect(), no connection.state_changed arrives.
  • The SDK reconnects by itself. connection_lost, reconnection_success and
reconnection_failed are not emitted; watch connection.state_changed.
  • After an SFU error with the DISCONNECT strategy, the SDK leaves the call:
the state becomes LEFT, call_ended arrives with reason 0, and wait()
returns. The SDK also leaves when ICE never connects, at its rejoin rate
limit, and after too many failed negotiations. Other reconnection failures
give RECONNECTING_FAILED; then wait() does not return, call leave().
  • If the coordinator WebSocket cannot connect, connect() raises (for example
CoordinatorError). In 6.1.1 the join continued. After the join, a closed
coordinator WebSocket or a failed coordinator health check makes the SDK
rejoin the call with a new session.
  • participant_joined is also emitted for the participants that are already in
    the call at join.
  • call_ended is also emitted when the coordinator ends the call, and only once.
wait() also returns when the call ends.
  • If connect() fails or is cancelled after the SDK join, it leaves the call
    before it raises.
  • A second connect() on the same ConnectionManager is not supported: no
events and no tracks arrive. Use a new rtc.join() for each join.
  • Join errors are getstream_rtc errors (subclasses of RustError:
    ApiError, CoordinatorError, PermissionDeniedError, RtcError, ...),
not SfuJoinError. rtc.join() raises ConfigError for an invalid client
    configuration.

Events

  • Event payloads are getstream_rtc classes, not SFU protobuf messages. All
are exported from getstream.video.rtc. track_type uses the TrackType
enum (not an Enum, as CallingState), participant.joined_at is a Unix
time float, participant.custom is a dict. The protobuf field type of
    TrackPublished and TrackUnpublished is track_type.
  • RemoteParticipant compares by identity, and each read of a participant
attribute gives a new object. Compare session_id.
  • New event: participant_count_changed.
  • The SFU transport events (subscriber_offer, publisher_answer,
    ice_trickle, join_response, health_check_response, go_away,
participant_migration_complete) are not emitted. The SDK handles them.
  • ice_restart arrives after the SDK has handled the SFU request.
  • A handler that raises does not stop the other events, wait() or leave().
pyee passes the exception to the error event. Without an error handler,
the exception is logged at ERROR; with one, that handler gets it.
emit(..., unsafe=True) does not raise it either.
  • If the event loop is blocked and an SDK event stream overflows (1024 events),
the lost events are skipped with a stream.rtc.events.lagged WARNING and
participants_state is filled again from the SDK.

Remote media

  • track_added gives a RemoteTrack. add_track_subscriber() is removed.
    track.next_pcm() gives 48 kHz mono int16 frames;
track.video_frames() gives a stream of I420 VideoFrames. Each
video_frames() call gives an independent stream; a slow reader skips to
    the latest frame.
  • track_added also arrives for the tracks that exist before the join.
    republish_tracks() is removed.
  • ConnectionManager keeps a reference only to the remote audio tracks: it
reads each of them to emit audio. Do not also call next_pcm() on these
tracks. The audio payload is the same PcmData as in 6.1.1; participant
    is a RemoteParticipant.
  • When the application drops the last reference to a video track, the SDK
    unsubscribes from the track.
  • After a remote mute and unmute, the same track object delivers frames again.
    No new track_added arrives.
  • drain_video_frames is removed: the SDK decodes a remote track only while it
    is read.
  • If the event loop is blocked and more than 64 new remote tracks wait to be
read, the SDK unsubscribes from the tracks that do not fit. Then no
track_added and no audio arrive for new tracks until the end of the
    call, and leave() raises RtcError.

Publishing

  • add_tracks() still accepts aiortc tracks. Before connect(), it raises
    IllegalStateError.
  • A new add_tracks(audio=...) or add_tracks(video=...) replaces the
published track of the same kind. In 6.1.1 each call added one more track.
  • When the source track stops, the track is unpublished and other participants
get track_unpublished. In 6.1.1 only the packets stopped.
  • Audio: the SDK paces the frames and sends mono (stereo is mixed down).
AudioStreamTrack has a new setting pace, False by default. Code that
sends an AudioStreamTrack through its own aiortc connection must set
pace=True to keep the 6.1.1 behavior. flush() also clears the audio that
is queued in the SDK and the audio of a write that is in progress.
  • Audio frames must be packed s16, as AudioStreamTrack gives them. Frames
in other formats are not converted: fltp frames stop the forwarding and
unpublish the track, s16p frames are sent garbled. The SDK takes the
sample rate of the first frame; a later frame at another rate raises
PcmRateMismatchError and unpublishes the track. The failure of a forwarder
is logged at ERROR with its traceback.
  • Video: sent as VP9, not H.264. The whole track has the size of its first
frame; later frames are scaled to it. STREAM_PATCH_AIORTC_BITRATES and
    STREAM_PATCH_AIORTC_H264_PRESET have no effect.

Resampling

FrameResampler, and so AudioStreamTrack.write(), resamples with the SDK
windowed-sinc filter (getstream_rtc.StreamResampler), not with PyAV. The
filter removes much more of the images and aliases (from 16 kHz to 48 kHz, the
image of a 7 kHz tone is at −103 dB, with PyAV at −38 dB). Differences:

  • Audio at another rate than the output rate is delayed by 128 input frames
(8 ms at 16 kHz) of silence, at the start and after each flush().
  • flush() and write(pcm, final=True) add about 132 input frames of
    near-silence after the held audio.
  • Mono input to stereo output is copied at full level (PyAV: −3 dB). The
channel count changes only from or to mono. The only output format is s16.
  • PyAVResampler is removed.

participants_state

  • It contains RemoteParticipant objects keyed by session_id, and includes
    the agent itself.
  • track_published does not change it: published_tracks keeps the value from
the join or from participant_joined. In 6.1.1 it replaced the participant
    and called the map() handlers.
  • get_user_from_track_id(), get_stream_id_from_track_id() and
set_track_stream_mapping() are removed. A RemoteTrack carries its
    participant.

Subscriptions

subscription_config works as in 6.1.1. The SDK applies it again on each
participant and track event. Difference: when no track matches any more, an
empty subscription list is sent to the SFU. The first list after a join or a
reconnect is never empty.

Logging

The transport logs come from the getstream logger and its children (for
example getstream.rtc.join.lifecycle), not from aiortc and aioice. Records
of other Rust crates are forwarded at WARNING and above. connect() reads the
effective level of the getstream logger.

rtc.join() starts the SDK runtime threads, and the first connect() starts
the log forwarding thread. A process forked after that cannot use the SDK:
connect() never returns. Start the worker processes before the first
rtc.join(), or use the spawn or forkserver start method.

Telemetry

Only the OpenTelemetry spans connect, leave and rtc.add_tracks stay. The
spans of the aiortc transport steps are removed.

Removed

  • Local recording (start_recording(), stop_recording(),
RecordingManager and the recording events). Use the server recording
    (call.start_recording()).
  • The aiortc transport: the coordinator WebSocket client, the SFU signaling,
the peer connections, the location discovery, the stats reporter, the
reconnection logic and the aiortc encoder patches. The removed modules and
    names are listed in migration.md.
  • The ConnectionManager attributes of the aiortc transport (publisher_pc,
    subscriber_pc, ws_client, join_response, session_id, ...).

Regressions compared with 6.1.1

  • Remote H.264 video is not decoded: the SDK decodes only VP8 and VP9. A
participant that publishes only H.264 (for example RTMP or SRT ingress) gives
    no video track.
  • TURN works only over UDP. Networks that allow only TCP or TLS cannot connect.
  • When the Stream client has only a user token, the SDK cannot refresh it. If
the token has an expiration and expires during the call, each later rejoin
or migration fails. With the API secret, the SDK creates a new token for each
    join, rejoin and migration.

Installation

  • The webrtc extra installs getstream-rtc. getstream stays pure Python.
  • getstream-rtc has its own version and its own release-please component.
  • A build from source needs the Rust toolchain from
    getstream-rtc/rust-toolchain.toml, a C compiler, cmake, pkg-config,
    libvpx and libclang.
  • The webrtc extra no longer installs scipy, soundfile, websockets,
    websocket-client, structlog, tenacity and ping3.

Open items before release

  • No workflow builds or publishes getstream-rtc wheels. release.yml builds
only getstream. Until getstream-rtc is on PyPI, the install of a released
    getstream[webrtc] fails.
  • The publish job of release.yml compiles getstream-rtc, which uv build
does not use. A failure of the Rust build stops the PyPI release of
    getstream.
  • getstream-rtc/Cargo.toml uses the branch fix/compatibility-fixes of
    stream-video-rust (Cargo.lock pins c865308), not a tag.
  • The section "Other bugs" of migration.md lists the other open findings of
    the code review.

Tests and CI

  • The binding tests (getstream-rtc/tests/) and the ConnectionManager tests
    (tests/rtc/) join real calls.
  • New CI job: cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy -D warnings, cargo test --lib.
  • The lint, type check and non-video jobs do not build the extension.
  • examples/rtc/echo_agent.py and examples/rtc/record_audio.py use only the
    public getstream.video.rtc API.

@dangusev
dangusev force-pushed the feature/rust-sdk-video branch from 8805bd0 to a17f9eb Compare October 2, 2026 12:41
@dangusev dangusev changed the title Feature/rust sdk video feat(rtc)!: move the WebRTC transport from aiortc to the Rust Video SDK Oct 7, 2026
Build
- rust-toolchain.toml pins Rust 1.88, the minimum version of the Rust
  Video SDK.
- Cargo.toml builds getstream._native from rustsrc/ against the SDK
  (stream-video-rust, branch fix/compatibility-fixes).
- pyproject.toml uses maturin instead of hatchling, and uv cache keys make
uv sync rebuild after Rust changes.
- release-please also updates the version in Cargo.toml and Cargo.lock.
- AGENTS.md lists the native build requirements.

Binding
- Client/Call: join, leave, session_id and calling_state as awaitables and
properties; SDK errors raise Error and RtcError. join() waits until a
cancelled join has finished its cleanup.
- events() and tracks(): async iterators that end when the call ends;
  participants() and call_state().
- Media: RemoteTrack.next_pcm()/next_video_frame() return numpy arrays
  without a copy; LocalAudioTrack/LocalVideoTrack, publish_audio(),
  publish_video() and update_subscriptions().

Logging
- SDK tracing events and third-party log records reach Python logging
through a bounded queue and one forwarding thread, so a thread that logs
  never waits for the GIL.
- configure_logging(logger, level, third_party_level=WARNING); records keep
the time of the Rust event.
- Client(log_bodies=True) logs redacted request and response bodies.
SDK logs are now visible in pytest runs
Fewer requests get sent to the backend this way
- Call.stop_publish_audio, stop_publish_video, stop_publish_screen_share
- Call.publish_screen_share (VP8)
- LocalAudioTrack(pcm_queue_capacity) in seconds
- __repr__ for participants, events, remote tracks and frames
- AGENTS.md: sdk_logs is for assertions on records
- Emit SFU events, coordinator custom events, connection state changes,
call_ended, track_added and audio from the SDK event and track streams,
with stream-py payload classes instead of protobuf.
- Join with an API secret or a user token; apply subscription configs.
- Publish aiortc audio and video tracks through AudioForwarder and
VideoForwarder (VP9 video, mono audio, unpaced AudioStreamTrack option).
- Key participants_state by session_id, include the local participant and
  refill it after lost events.
- Add RemoteTrack.video_frames(): an independent latest-frame stream for
each reader, in place of next_video_frame().
- Remove local recording.
- Add migration.md with the breaking changes versus 4.1.0.
Consumers import RemoteTrack, RemoteParticipant, TrackType,
VideoFrameStream, VideoFrame and the emitted event classes from the public
package instead of getstream._rust.
- A new video track reuses the stopped video sender; test added.
- Set the extension version to 6.1.1, as in pyproject.toml.
- Document the 20 ms minimum PCM queue and video republishing.
- add_tracks unpublishes the earlier audio or video track before it
publishes a new one, so a new track no longer fails with MediaError
when the earlier one is live or not yet unpublished.
- Bump the Rust SDK revision to 147e04a.
- Delete the old join, signaling, reconnection and peer connection code
and the attributes and methods that only it used.
- rtc.join takes subscription_config explicitly; max_join_retries,
drain_video_frames and other keyword arguments are removed.
- Delete the peer connection, signaling, coordinator WebSocket,
reconnection, stats, tracer, location discovery and aiortc encoder
  patch modules with their tests.
- Keep only the subscription config dataclasses in tracks.py and the
  audio helpers in track_util.py.
scipy, soundfile, websockets, websocket-client, structlog, tenacity and
ping3 were used only by the deleted aiortc transport code.
A remote track that is dropped during a mute is delivered again as a new
track_added when its media flows after the republish.
It plays back the browser participant's audio and shows their camera
mirrored, through rtc.join, the audio and track_added events,
RemoteTrack.video_frames() and add_tracks.
When the call ends without leave(), the SDK stops the published tracks.
The forwarders kept writing, and the publish task ended with an
IllegalStateError that nothing retrieved.
It writes the audio event of each participant session to its own WAV
file.
- Cast the aiortc frames and their arrays to the types that the
  forwarders write.
- Narrow the coordinator and client events by their class.
- Require user_id in rtc.join and ConnectionManager, and raise TypeError
for a call without an id.
The lint, type check and non-video jobs install every dependency
except getstream-rtc, so they need no Rust toolchain. ty reads
getstream_rtc from the source tree. A new Rust job runs cargo fmt,
clippy and the unit tests in getstream-rtc/.
Rust SDK revision 49d4b22 has a stateful windowed-sinc
StreamResampler. getstream_rtc exports it, and FrameResampler uses it
instead of PyAV; PyAVResampler is removed. LocalAudioTrack.write_pcm
raises the new PcmRateMismatchError for a frame at another rate than
the first frame. migration.md lists the changes.
migration.md records more breaking changes and the open findings of
the code review. uv.lock has newer versions of 109 packages, among
them the CUDA 13 builds of the NVIDIA packages.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Remove the _coordinator_task wait.

ConnectionManager does not define _coordinator_task. The coordinator task starts before call.join() and remains active until the call ends, so this wait raises AttributeError and cannot provide readiness. The event streams are created before joining; send the event once and wait for its delivery.

🐛 Suggested fix
- # join() returns before the coordinator watches the call, and an event sent earlier never arrives.
- await asyncio.wait_for(connection._coordinator_task, timeout=10.0)

Remove the wait on the nonexistent `_coordinator_task` from the custom-event
test; the coordinator remains active until the call ends, so this wait raises an
AttributeError and does not establish readiness. Keep the event send and
delivery wait, relying on the event streams being created before `call.join()`.

Move the "Other bugs" section out of the user-facing migration guide.

This section is an internal review backlog. It is not migration guidance. It cites exact source line numbers, which become wrong after the next edit. It also includes items that do not concern users, for example AGENTS.md style, test type annotations, unused test assets and CI timeouts. Users who read the guide after the release get a list of unresolved internal problems that has no owner and no tracking.

Do these steps before the release:

  • Open one tracker issue for each open item.
  • Delete Lines 421-606.
  • Keep in the guide only the user-visible limitations that the earlier sections do not already cover.

Do you want me to draft the issue list from this section?

Build and publish getstream-rtc when its release is created.

This configuration adds an independent release, but the supplied .github/workflows/release.yml job runs only uv build and uv publish from the root. Plain uv build builds the current project, not every workspace member. A getstream-rtc release therefore has no matching published distribution, while the webrtc extra requires it. Add a package-specific wheel build and publication path for the supported platforms. (docs.astral.sh)

The SDK sets LEFT before leave() returns, but the call-end watcher
counts that end later on a tokio task. A stream created right after
leave() could read the old count and wait for a later join and leave.
call_end::start() now reads the SDK calling state, after the count.
CallEnd.ended and the JOINING branch are removed. tracks() releases
the GIL for the state read, as the event streams do.
The import started the forwarding thread. fork() copies only the
calling thread, so a process forked after the import (gunicorn
--preload, the Celery prefork pool) had no thread, and its first
configure_logging() waited forever on Linux and stopped with SIGTRAP
on macOS. The first configure_logging() with a logger now starts the
thread; configure_logging(None) without a thread does not wait. A
fork after configure_logging() is still not supported.

connect() called configure_logging() on the event loop. It waits until
the handlers of the queued records have run, so a getstream handler
that waits for the loop deadlocked connect(). connect() now calls it
through asyncio.to_thread().

migration.md has the new line numbers of logging.rs,
connection_manager.py and test_connection_manager.py.
When the forwarding of a track from add_tracks() raised, for example
TypeError for fltp frames or PcmRateMismatchError for a rate change,
the track was unpublished and the exception stayed on a task that
nothing read. _forward() now logs it at ERROR with its traceback
before it unpublishes the track.

migration.md describes the record and has the new line numbers of
connection_manager.py and test_connection_manager.py.
leave() cancels only the publish tasks that exist when its SDK leave
and the event tasks end. A publish that resumed after that point
started a forwarder that nothing cancelled; with a source that gives
no frames, the task waited in recv() forever and held the track.
_start_forwarding() now starts no task once leave() has begun. The SDK
leave stops the published track.

migration.md has the new line range in connection_manager.py.
ConnectionManager has no _coordinator_task since the Rust SDK rewrite,
so test_custom_event_round_trip failed. The SDK connects the
coordinator WebSocket before the coordinator join request and sends
its connection_id with it, so the coordinator watches the call when
join() returns, and the test needs no wait.

migration.md: rtc.join() starts the SDK runtime threads and the first
connect() starts the log forwarding thread. A process forked after
that cannot use the SDK.

Continue track consumption after a reported queue overflow.

If more than 64 remote tracks wait in TrackQueue, its iterator raises RtcError and clears the overflow flag. This async for then exits permanently. The manager stops emitting track_added and audio for subsequent tracks, and leave() receives the failed task’s exception. Handle this recoverable overflow in the consumer and continue reading the surviving tracks.

Run media cleanup even when leave fails.

If call.leave() raises, or an event consumer raises during gather(), execution skips cancellation of _audio_tasks and _publish_tasks. Those tasks can keep reading or forwarding media after leave() fails. Move their cancellation and awaiting into a finally block, while preserving the original failure.

Contributor Author

About the outside-diff comment on tests/rtc/coordinator/test_custom_events.py:60 in this review: fixed in 8447041. The wait on _coordinator_task is removed. The SDK connects the coordinator WebSocket before the coordinator join request, so the coordinator watches the call when join() returns.

The guide compared with 4.1.0. origin/main is 6.1.1, and the
getstream.video.rtc code of both is the same, so the tables and notes
now name 6.1.1.

New behavior with the SDK at c865308:
- The SDK leaves the call after an SFU error with the DISCONNECT
strategy, when ICE never connects, at its rejoin rate limit and after
too many failed negotiations. wait() returns, and call_ended comes
  with reason 0.
- connect() raises when the coordinator WebSocket cannot connect. After
the join, a closed coordinator WebSocket or a failed health check
makes the SDK rejoin the call.
- With the API secret, the SDK creates a new user token for each join,
  rejoin and migration.
- flush() also drops the audio of a write to the SDK that is in
  progress.
- The first subscription list after a join or a reconnect is never
  empty.

"Other bugs" has the results of the verification of the open findings:
new severities and states, the SDK behavior behind the
_stop_forwarding() and video_forwarder items, and fewer unverified
points. The flush race in audio_forwarder.py, the Event alias in
_bindings.pyi and the "This guide" item are removed.
TrackStream raises RtcError once when the track queue overflows. The
async for in _emit_tracks() ended on it, so no track_added or audio
came for later tracks, and leave() raised the error from gather().
_emit_tracks() now logs the error at WARNING and reads on. The tracks
that did not fit stay lost until they are published again.

leave() cancelled the audio and publish tasks only after the SDK leave
and the event tasks ended. When one of them raised, or when the caller
cancelled leave(), a forwarder whose source gives no frames waited in
recv() forever. The cancellation is now in a finally block.

migration.md describes the overflow behavior, keeps the open part of
the leave() item, and has the new line numbers of connection_manager.py
and test_connection_manager.py.
actions/checkout writes GITHUB_TOKEN to .git/config by default, and the
jobs then run dependency code: uv sync and cargo build getstream-rtc.
All checkouts in run_tests.yml and run_integration.yml now set
persist-credentials: false, as release.yml does. No job pushes.

migration.md has the new line numbers of run_tests.yml.
test-video runs getstream-rtc/tests, but test-all passed only tests/
and getstream/, so it did not run the binding tests.
The line began with a literal "\n+", so git read it as a pattern, not
as a comment.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Add token renewal for user-token RTC clients.

When stream.has_api_secret is false, this boundary passes stream.token once to getstream_rtc.Client. The Rust user-token client reuses that token for later joins. If the token expires during a call, a later rejoin or migration fails instead of renewing the token.

Extend the getstream_rtc.Client user-token path to obtain a fresh token before rejoin or migration. Keep the API-secret path unchanged because it already mints a token for each join, rejoin, and migration.

Restore H.264 support before relying on the SDK receive path.

When a reachable call has an H.264-only remote publisher, the SDK join and track path cannot provide decoded video frames. The migration documents that the SDK supports only VP8 and VP9, while the previous aiortc transport decoded H.264. Restore H.264 decoding or add an equivalent fallback before using this path.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Preserve TURN TCP/TLS connectivity in the Rust RTC client.

Client::new passes only the default ClientConfig to the Rust SDK, and Call.join() directly awaits the SDK join. The migration guide states that this path supports TURN only over UDP. A network that blocks direct UDP and permits only TURN over TCP or TLS therefore cannot establish the call. Update the SDK integration to use a release and configuration that support TURN over TCP/TLS, and expose that configuration at this client boundary.

python-dotenv is in the dev group, not in getstream[webrtc].

On Ctrl+C, asyncio.run() raises KeyboardInterrupt after main() leaves
the call, so Python printed a traceback. The examples now suppress it.

Comment thread examples/rtc/echo_agent.py Outdated
uv run installs only the base dependencies and the dev group, so in a
clean environment the examples failed to import aiortc and
getstream.video.rtc.
- Replace the participants when the call is joined again after a
reconnect; the SDK sends no events for the local sessions.
- Emit the call_ended fallback after the SFU stream ends, so a SFU
call_ended that is still buffered is not replaced by one without a
  reason.
- Read the participant of a remote audio track once, not per frame.
- Remove the unused `unsafe` parameter of emit().
- Document that connect() replaces the logging configuration.
Rust only queues records; the thread `getstream-logging` takes them with
`_next_logs()` without the GIL, so Rust never calls Python to log.
configure_logging is Python, returns at once, and raises RuntimeError in a
process forked after the logging was configured. `_flush()` is the
delivery barrier for tests.
