feat(jobs): the contract redline job, on a word-clauses/1 runner - #2412
The app side of the contract redline, the second paid job (proposal, ADR 0086): a firm adds a counterparty's Word contract and its own playbook, and gets back a revised copy with tracked changes and comments, each review point reported as changed, met, not covered by the playbook, or left to a person.
The runner, word-clauses/1 (modules/jobs/word_clauses/), pure over files and a model so the worker and the eval run the same code:
reads the contract with the Word engine's own reader, each paragraph as P<n> with the list number Word shows beside it;
asks one schema-held call per review point, the contract and the playbook first so a provider caches them;
keeps a change only when its playbook quote is in the playbook word for word and its words are in the paragraph it names (curly quotes, dashes, case and a leading list number forgiven, then mapped back to the paragraph's own characters); anything else is asked again once, then goes to a person with its reason;
never invents a position: a point the playbook is silent on is not_covered and changes nothing;
cuts each replace to the words that differ, widens its anchor until the engine finds it once, keeps it out of an earlier change in the same paragraph, and tries every operation on a scratch copy in the engine's partial mode, so what the engine refuses goes to a person and the version always applies;
puts the reason the other side may read on each change and SurfSense's reasoning with the playbook quote in an internal comment, which every download leaves out; one internal summary comment means a contract that already meets the playbook still saves a version.
Around it:
the shared pieces both runners use moved out of workbook_rows (modules/jobs/asking/, evidence/passages_block.py, settings/declared.py);
modules/jobs/runners.py picks each job's config and file type by runner, used by run start, the settings routes and the Studio worker; RUNNERS gains word-clauses/1; the listing names each job's runner;
the agent's run tool words its file and documents for either job and summarises a review in its own terms; the free revisions skill sends a playbook review to the job;
ingest's list-level rule moved to word_markdown/list_level.py, so the redline numbers clauses as ingest does;
the eval harness runs contract cases: verdicts, outcomes, changes right, unneeded and missed, the experts' clause found, and the file's integrity (only SurfSense's changes, Reject all gives back the original).
Screens: the contract run form, a run counted in review points, a done view with each outcome and the points left to a person, the runs list and the agent's step ("Reviewed …"), in all ten languages, with the glossary's new terms.
Docs:docs/architecture/jobs.md (the redline runner, runs, screen, agent, evals, known gaps), agent.md, and the user guide's "Review a contract".
Why
The contract redline ships beside the security questionnaire in the Business switch release (ADR 0086).
Part of #2414, which stays open for signing and publishing the pack. The licence, mail and site side is #2413.
How to test
From surfsense_local/backend, with the main checkout's venv python (PYTHON_DOTENV_DISABLED=1):
From surfsense_local/frontend: pnpm test, or vitest run src/features/jobs src/features/agent src/i18n.
In the app: the pack lives in the private surfsense-jobs repository (contract-redline/pack). Sign it, set SURFSENSE_LOCAL_JOB_PACKS to it and SURFSENSE_LOCAL_JOBS_UNLOCKED=1, start pnpm dev, add an NDA (.docx) and a playbook to Sources, then Jobs › Contract redline › Run.
Real-data eval (contract-redline/eval in the same repository), from surfsense_local/backend with PYTHONPATH=.:
Results on the 10 test NDAs (ContractNLI's SEC filings, 161 scored points, the Bonterms Mutual NDA as the firm's playbook, one run each, pack 0.1.0):

An outcome is right when the point gets a change exactly where the gold needs one, and nothing is left to a person. The gold is a draft until the maintainer checks the firm's stance on each point; the report is in the private repository, contract-redline/eval/results/2026-11-06-test-v0.1.0/REPORT.md. The main error is a change where the contract already meets the playbook in other words; a second check did not help on the dev set, so the pack has none, and the Jobs settings offer a checker only to a job that checks.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added contract redlining: select a Word contract and playbook documents, then review proposed tracked changes and comments in a revised copy without altering the original.
View review-point outcomes, progress, and items that need human attention. Optional external comments can be included in the copy.
Added contract review job setup and status information across the app, with translated interface text and updated user documentation.
Job settings now show a second-check option only when that job supports checks.
Unfinished; see the draft PR. Moves the parts both runners need out of
workbook_rows (modules/jobs/asking/, evidence/passages_block.py,
settings/declared.py) and adds the contract run form and the shared
run-form pieces in the frontend. The word-clauses/1 runner itself is not
written yet.
Adds the word-clauses/1 runner for reviewing .docx contracts against playbook sources. The change adds backend review and redline processing, evaluation support, frontend run flows, shared runner infrastructure, tests, documentation, and translations.

…rm's playbook
Adds word-clauses/1: each review point asked once under a JSON schema over the
contract as the Word engine reads it, kept only when its playbook quote is found
and its change can be placed, pre-flighted with the engine's partial mode so what
the engine refuses goes to a person. Runs start, list and settle by runner, the
Studio worker and the agent's run tool dispatch on it, and the eval harness gains
a contract branch: cases, scoring, a file check and a report.
…ing it
A model often quotes most of a paragraph for a change of a few words, and its
anchor then crowded out another point's change to the same paragraph. Each
replace is cut to the words that differ, an anchor keeps out of the words an
earlier change in the paragraph rewrites, and a clash goes to a person as
CHANGES_OVERLAP.
…anguages
The contract run form, a run's progress counted in review points, a done view
with each point's outcome and the points left to a person, the runs list and
the agent's step in the redline's words. The architecture doc and the user
guide describe the redline; the glossary gains its terms.
…n one is installed
The free revisions skill told the agent to load it for any redline. A review of
a contract against the firm's playbook, and a questionnaire, are jobs with
their own checks; edits the user directs stay with the revise tool.
The contract and the playbook together took 70% of the window, which on a
32K local model left too little for the instructions and a thinking model's
reply; they now take 60%, past which each point sees its nearest clauses and
passages.
The redline's pack makes no second check, which on the dev cases kept the
needless changes and sent needed ones to a person, so a checker chosen for it
would do nothing. A job's settings now say whether it checks; Settings and the
run form offer and name a checker only then.

39-46: Major · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win
Reject ambiguous old_text before selecting a span.
If old_text occurs twice and the model intends the second occurrence, locate selects the first. Anchor widening can then make that wrong occurrence unique, so preflight accepts the edit and the report marks the point as changed. Ask for a longer quote or leave the point for a person.

longer quote or manual review.
33-43: Minor · Stability & Availability · Poor tradeoff
Bound the selected contract text before prompting.
When a selected clause exceeds the contract budget, Outline sends it in full. The request can exceed the model’s context window, leaving the point for a person or failing the run. Split oversized clauses into bounded passages and enforce the budget across the selected text.

An outcome is right when the point gets a change exactly where the gold needs one, and nothing is left to a person. The gold is a draft until the maintainer checks the firm's stance on each point; the report is in the private repository,
contract-redline/eval/results/2026-11-06-test-v0.1.0/REPORT.md. The main error is a change where the contract already meets the playbook in other words; a second check did not help on the dev set, so the pack has none, and the Jobs settings offer a checker only to a job that checks.Summary by CodeRabbit
