A public-record oversight project documenting the VA foreclosure crisis, built by the families it happened to.
It works the way a records office works. Every dated or numeric claim traces to a primary document, and the document is reproduced so a reader can check it without taking anyone's word for anything. Where the evidence stops, the page says so. Where a figure is contested or unverified, it is labelled and held rather than quietly published.
The method is half investigative documentation and half social work: build the file the way a caseworker builds a case file, then report it the way a reporter reports a story. Primary sources first. Every claim carries an ID, a source, a date and a stated limit. Nothing gets stronger in the retelling.
This repository serves the website. It contains built output: the HTML, CSS and data files GitHub Pages publishes. There is no build step, so what is committed here is what a reader sees. Everything in it is intended to be public.

Three tiers. They are not the same people and they are never merged into one number. Each carries its own source and date.

Congress passed H.R. 1815 unanimously and it was signed July 30, 2025, creating the Partial Claim Program at 38 U.S.C. 3737. Section 3737(h) permits the Secretary to act by administrative guidance before regulations. Servicers are not required to deliver the partial claim until November 28, 2026.
Every dated or numeric claim carries a source and an as-of date. The source register lists every citation. The claims register records what each number rests on and, just as importantly, where it stops.
Claims are labelled by kind. A documented fact, a project analysis, and a figure held pending verification are marked differently and never blended.
Corrections are made forward, never quietly. When something published here turns out to be wrong, the correction appears at /about/corrections with its date, what it said before, what it says now, and why. Nothing is edited into place and nothing is removed once posted.
Charts carry their source, their as-of date, their registered limitation, and a data-table equivalent. Meaning is never carried by colour alone.
Accountability is named, motive is not. This project documents what officials, agencies and servicers said and did, on dates, in venues, and measures the outcome against the standard they set themselves. It does not assert why anyone acted.
Veterans Foreclosure Crisis is a veteran and family led group of veterans, spouses, caregivers and family members directly affected by the VA foreclosure crisis, organizing with others in the fight. It is led by families with a direct stake in this record, working with a cohort of veteran households across multiple states.

Conflict disclosure: her own family's loan is one of the cases documented here. That is stated rather than buried, because for a records project it is what makes the rest checkable.
Funding and organizational disclosure: we are an informal, unfunded group of veterans, spouses and family members organizing together. Some of us are directly impacted, others are not. There is no organization behind this and no money in it. If that changes, this line changes with it.
This record exists to be used. Families, advocates, caseworkers, reporters, congressional staff and legal aid organisations are the intended users, and nobody should have to ask permission to help someone keep their house.
- The record, the writing, the charts, the toolkits, the printable PDFs and the data registers are available under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0). Use it, republish it, adapt it, translate it, build on it, including commercially. The one condition is attribution.
- The site code, the HTML, CSS and scripts, is available under the MIT licence.
Attribution is the only string, and it is not about credit. It is so the source and the as-of date travel with the figure. A number from this record that arrives somewhere without its date stops being checkable, and checkable is the whole asset. Credit "Veterans Foreclosure Crisis" and link back, and note the date you took it.
