Tracking: fork issue 41 (vps2 series ledger). Upstream issue: #1559 (this series' gap record; the original upstream bug is #978). Port source: the F1c-head-to-CS residual, cross-checked against upstream PR #979 (fix(webview): isolate parallel mode and provider profile writes) — closed/superseded by the vps2 series; the fork issue 41 ledger names #979 as the F3 port source.
src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts — the webview delete-path (deleteProviderProfile + repointPersistedViewStates), loadViewState dead-mode-pin validation, the handleModeSwitch profile-write isolation (per-view upsert/activate instead of the shared write), the as-any cast drop in delegateParentAndOpenChild, and a 3-line Stryker exclusion comment above the no-op listApiConfigMeta view-state write (two equivalent mutants). This round also: dispose() runs every cleanup step independently (per-step try/catch, first error preserved and rethrown after all steps run, individual disposables isolated) — the CR Major finding fix; and the F1a view-identity review fixes are ported into this unit's copy (temporary-id authorship flag, ownsTargetEntry re-key gate, null-prototype viewStates, loadViewState ownership guard, setValue/setValues rollback).
src/core/task/Task.ts + Task.spec.ts — the task-side per-view mode/profile write: mode switches route through provider.handleModeSwitch and the submitted message is kept on failure.
src/core/tools/SwitchModeTool.ts + switchModeTool.spec.ts — the tool-side per-view write port.
src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts — ported mock surface only (4 mock fields + defaultModeSlug import); webviewMessageHandler.ts itself is 0/0.
sticky-mode / ClineProvider / parallelMode specs — per-view assertions, the CS F3 describes, and the mutation-killing tests; this round the sticky-mode persisted-view-state-keys suite, rollback tests and the re-key ownership adaptations are ported in, and every ClineProvider construction passes the shared WebviewFocusTracker.
src/extension/tests/api-set-configuration.spec.ts — passes the required ClineProviderFactory argument (main's new constructor parameter).
Upstream main 793b65b merged (this round): 5 conflicts reconciled both-sides — openClineInNewTab keeps the serialized flow on main's typed options + shared tracker; getState keeps the per-view mergedStateValues reads including main's new alwaysDenyUnapprovedCommands; the non-await postMessage path keeps the original-content strip.
Budget
Unit delta vs the stack base: 10 files, +919/-65 (a+d 984 vs the 400-soft / 1000-hard budget: soft-over, hard-under; the unit carries the production isolation logic). The PR diff vs upstream/main is 33 files (+9186/-511) because the branch is stacked on the unmerged F1-F2 series; the series merges bottom-up, at which point each PR's CI gate measures its own unit. The CI mutation-diff changed-line advisory is a by-construction artifact of the stacked diff.
vitest run src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts -t "active instance tracking" — dispose step isolation (early-step failure runs later releases and reports the first error).
vitest run src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.sticky-mode.spec.ts — per-view viewStates keys + the ported persisted-view-state-keys suite.
vitest run src/core/tools/__tests__/switchModeTool.spec.ts src/core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts — tool/task-side per-view writes.
vitest: ClineProvider.spec 288/291 (the 3 failures are local-only: the donor-built @roo-code/types dist predates alwaysDenyUnapprovedCommands, so globalSettingsSchema strips it locally; CI builds types from source); sticky-mode + registerCommands + parallelMode + webviewMessageHandler + flicker-free-cancel + api-set-configuration 221/221; webview-ui ExtensionStateContext 25/25; packages/types global-settings 9/9.
eslint --max-warnings=0 clean on all touched files; eslint-suppressions ClineProvider.spec.ts 196 -> 194 (decrease), no count increased.
Negative controls: flipping the first-error guard in the new cleanupStep reddens both dispose tests; forcing the re-key ownership check to true reddens sticky-mode "does not merge a stale temporary-id entry"; both restored byte-exact (sha256 match).
Prettier: full-repo check passes on the PR merge tree (merge ref cddc7d7).
Fixed the CR Major finding: dispose() cleanup steps are now isolated (per-step try/catch, first error preserved and rethrown after all steps run, individual disposables isolated); new regression test "runs every later cleanup step when an earlier step rejects" (mcpHub.unregisterClient rejects; customModesManager.dispose and taskHistoryStore.dispose still run); existing cleanup-failure test updated for the per-step log wording. Thread replied and resolved.
Ported the F1a view-identity review fixes into this unit's ClineProvider copy; adapted the three re-key tests to author entries through the real write path; ported the sticky-mode persisted-view-state-keys suite, rollback tests and the viewStates global-setting tests.
Added the required WebviewFocusTracker constructor argument to the 88 ClineProvider.spec and 40 parallelMode.spec constructions; api-set-configuration.spec passes the required ClineProviderFactory.
Unit-delta local Stryker preflight was certified at the pre-merge head; the stacked CI mutation-diff reports a changed-line cap artifact by construction (inherited shared content). The dispose-isolation change is covered by the two dispose tests plus the negative control above.
Series mechanics
PR base is main; the branch is stacked on the F2 head; merge order F1a -> F1b -> F1c -> F2 -> F3 -> F4 -> F5 -> F6 -> F7.
CS not-ported register (for consistency): kimi-code OAuth try/catch + routerModels.spec +29; ApiConfigManager min-w-0->grow; ApiConfigManager.visual.tsx deletion + 2 PNG baselines; mojibake comment; providers/, .coderabbit.yaml, .github/, CONTRIBUTING.md, .gitignore churn — none of these touch the files in this PR.
Security Boundaries / view-state id rows: addressed at 9c2bee3. setViewStateId now rejects non-string ids (crafted postMessage), bounds the key length (MAX_VIEW_STATE_ID_LENGTH), and refuses ids already owned by another live instance; a refused view stays on its temporary id against shared state. Regression tests: non-string, oversized, claimed-by-another-view. Negative controls: disabling the ownership check reddens exactly the claim test; widening the length bound reddens exactly the oversized test; restores byte-exact (hash match).
The spec gained an afterEach clearing the static instance registry (suites construct providers directly and never dispose most of them; leaked instances would claim ids ahead of later tests).
Persistence Integrity setValues/setValue ordering rows: verified already addressed by the pushed code: _saveViewLocalStateFromMutation persists the non-secret subset before updating the buffer; the re-key is a single queued write (no delete-then-write window; authorship clears only after the write lands); the mutation hook keeps the buffer synced across setValue/setValues and profile upsert/activation/deletion.
Proofs at 9c2bee3: sticky-mode 33/33; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.
Non-activating saves (upsertProviderProfile with activate=false, and the zoo-gateway callback's non-active path) rewrote the profile on disk but left pinned views serving the pre-save snapshot; the non-activating branch now refreshes pinned sibling views (and this view when it holds the pin), and the callback routes through upsertProviderProfile so the refresh cannot be forgotten.
getState() no longer spreads the pinned overlay over the shared provider settings (a key the profile never defined leaked in from the shared profile: model id, region, tuning). The overlay is a complete snapshot: used in place, with only apiProvider falling back to shared state.
Regression tests: "refreshes views pinned to a profile saved without activation"; "does not leak shared provider keys into a pinned view's api configuration; the zoo-gateway callback test asserts the upsert path.
Negative controls: dropping the else-branch refresh reddens exactly the refresh test, reverting the merge semantics reddens exactly the leak test; restores byte-exact (hash match).
Proofs at fe00539: ClineProvider.spec green, sticky-mode and webviewMessageHandler green, eslint --max-warnings=0 clean, tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines, prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.
Follow-up: overlay read from the view buffer (required-lane fix)
The previous round's overlay-completeness change read the overlay from the merged state values, which also carry the raw apiConfiguration state key. That key is a partial patch written by shared-store paths, not a view snapshot: with no overlay present and the raw key partial, getState() served only the partial object and dropped the shared provider settings the previous merge produced (the parallel-mode activation tests caught exactly this - the activated profile's model id vanished; required lane red on the units carrying that spec). The overlay is now read from the view buffer itself, where a present value is by contract a complete profile and an absent one means the shared store serves the settings.
Proofs: ClineProvider.parallelMode.spec green where present (the six synchronization tests that regressed), ClineProvider.spec green including the overlay-completeness tests, sticky-mode and webviewMessageHandler green; negative control: reverting the overlay to a shallow merge over the shared settings still reddens exactly the leak test; restores byte-exact (hash match); eslint --max-warnings=0 clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.
Follow-up: active task handlers rebuilt on non-activating saves (head a5a2f60)
A review round on the view-identity unit found that the non-activating-save refresh updated pinned views' buffers but not their active tasks' API handlers, and the posted state prefers the task's own apiConfiguration: a conversation running in a view pinned to the saved profile kept sending the old token (e.g. after the Zoo Gateway callback rotated it) even though the view's buffer had caught up. The refresh now rebuilds the affected tasks' handlers in the pinned views, and the non-activating branch rebuilds this view's own handler when it holds the pin.
Proofs: ClineProvider.spec green (the pinned-sibling refresh test now asserts the active task's handler is rebuilt with the saved settings, not just the private buffer); negative control: dropping the rebuild from the refresh reddens exactly that assertion, restores byte-exact (hash match); parallelMode/sticky-mode/webviewMessageHandler green; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.
Follow-up: test-quality round from the review (head b68744c)
The review round on the api-wiring unit named four test-quality issues; the ones present in this unit are fixed here: the viewStates describe block moved out of the alwaysDenyUnapprovedCommands block (test names carried the wrong subject), the prune test's toBeDefined() survival checks replaced with exact-shape toEqual assertions (they pass even if pruning strips fields), the stale-temporary-entry test's fixed 10 ms wait replaced with awaiting the load itself (the negative assertion could pass vacuously on a slow load), and the readiness-cancel test's fake timers restored in a finally block (a failed assertion left fake timers active and hung a later real-timer test).
Proofs: global-settings 9/9 where present, ClineProvider.spec green, sticky-mode green where present, api-task-control green where present; negative controls: pruning that strips updatedAt reddens exactly the prune test, a loadViewState that adopts the unowned temporary-id entry reddens exactly the stale-entry test, restores byte-exact (hash match); eslint --max-warnings=0 clean (src and types); prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.
Follow-up: review-round fixes from the series (head 390c0d4)
A review round on this unit produced three fixes. When the view's durable mode pin write rejected inside the mode-switch handler, the task-history write and the in-memory task mode had already landed and the caller delivered the submitted message with the new task mode against the view's unchanged mode and mode-linked API configuration - the failure now restores the pre-switch task mode and history entry before rethrowing (new sticky-mode test; negative control: dropping the rollback reddens exactly that test).
The fallback deletion path's re-check of whether this view pinned the deleted profile was unreachable (a view pinned to the deleted profile takes the activation path above and returns); the dead branches are removed, behavior-preserving (spec green).
A review round on the mode-profile-writes unit found that the profile-deletion re-pin updated each sibling view's buffer but not its running task: the posted state prefers the task's own apiConfiguration, so a conversation in a view pinned to the deleted profile kept sending the deleted profile's settings. The re-pin now rebuilds the sibling's API handler with the replacement's settings and re-points the task's sticky profile name, mirroring the activation path.
Proofs: ClineProvider.spec and sticky-mode green; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED. The rebuild's negative control (dropping it reddens exactly the sibling re-pin test, byte-exact restore) runs in the units that own that test.
Proofs: ClineProvider.spec 293/293, sticky-mode 34/34 (new pin-write-failure rollback test), parallel-mode 34/34 (sibling re-pin test asserts the task handler rebuild and sticky-name re-point); negative controls: dropping the rollback call reddens exactly the rollback test, dropping the rebuild reddens exactly the re-pin test, restores byte-exact (hash match); eslint --max-warnings=0 clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up, head 08c6fcb)
Mode-switch atomicity (ported from the sibling unit): handleModeSwitchUnlocked reconciles every write it owns (shared mode, durable view pin, task mode, task history) when a failure lands after the task-mode write - including the mode-linked profile activation - so submitUserMessage delivers the submitted message on the pre-switch mode and profile instead of a half-applied switch; regression test included.
Non-activating profile saves no longer force-rebuild the API handler of a view whose active task follows a different sticky profile (both rebuild sites guarded by taskApiConfigName); regression tests cover both sites.
Test hygiene: prune assertions compare full kept entries; the two re-key storage tests seed through the durable write path so their assertions can fail; sticky-mode afterEach disposes the per-test provider before resetting the instance registry; the webview state-payload test renamed to describe what it asserts.
Verified: ClineProvider.spec, sticky-mode and parallelMode suites green, eslint --max-warnings=0 clean, tsc real=0, prettier clean; negative controls: removing either rebuild guard reddens exactly its test, reverting the reconcile reddens exactly the activation-rollback test.
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 2, head c820dd0)
Deleted-profile re-pin: the forced task-handler rebuild and the sticky-name rewrite now require taskApiConfigName === deleted profile (the view-buffer re-pin stays unconditional), so a pinned view whose task follows another sticky profile keeps its conversation's settings and persisted profile name. Regression test included (negative control: removing the guard reddens exactly that test); the existing sibling re-pin test's task double now names the deleted profile as its sticky profile, matching what the test asserts.
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 3, head 0b08bb0)
Mode-switch reconcile: the rollback is skipped once the mode-linked activation has started writing shared state (a mode-only rollback would pair the old mode with the new profile), and also when the mutation signal has aborted (the queue has advanced; a newer mutation may own the mode stores - this is the fix requested on the PR thread). The trailing state post now runs outside the reconciled region - a UI-refresh failure after a committed switch is logged, not rolled back. Three regression tests included (negative controls: removing either guard or re-throwing the post reddens exactly one test each).
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 4, head 0d1e16a)
Mode-switch events now match the stores: ModeChanged is emitted only after the switch commits (a reconciled failure no longer leaves listeners on the rolled-back mode), and the rollback re-emits TaskModeSwitched with the restored mode for API/IPC consumers. The lock path no longer posts inside the reconciled region (it falls through to the committed-switch tail, where a post failure is logged). The mode-default recording reads the view's effective profile (getValues overlay) instead of the shared slot, so a sibling view's activation cannot become this mode's default. Three regression tests included (negative controls: each mutation reddens exactly its test).
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 5, head 9f62b84)
The committed-switch guard now flips only when the activation has actually written the activated profile (onSharedWriteStart callback), so a mode-linked activation whose own profile lookup fails (deleted profile) still reconciles the switch. The catch that keeps a switch (activation had written, no abort) now emits ModeChanged and posts state before rethrowing, so listeners and the webview learn the committed mode; the abort branch intentionally stays silent (a newer mutation may own the fields - documented in code). In-try abort checkpoints after the mode writes no longer return silently: they fall through to the emit/post tail so the committed mode reaches listeners and the webview. Three regression tests; negative controls: each mutation reddens exactly its test. The activation-failure test double now mirrors the onSharedWriteStart flip.
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 6, head 8d33d13)
Abort-silence rule settled: the emit/post tail announces a switch only while its committed mode is still current (after an abort, the tail checks the effective mode store; a superseded commit stays silent because the newer mutation already announced its own mode). This keeps both invariants: a committed switch is never left un-notified while it is current, and no stale announce clobbers a newer owner. Regression tests cover both branches (still-current -> emitted; superseded -> silent); negative controls: dropping the guard reddens the superseded test, always-silencing reddens the still-current test.
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 7, head 5ee6bcb)
The lookup-failure regression test now exercises the REAL activateProviderProfileUnlocked (providerSettingsManager.activateProfile rejects) instead of a stub, so the production placement of the committed-switch flip (only after activateProfile resolves) is covered; a matching test keeps the switch when activateProfile resolves and a later shared write (setModeConfig) rejects. Negative controls: moving the flip above the activateProfile await reddens exactly the rollback test; removing it reddens exactly the kept-switch test.
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 8, head 6e583d0)
The kept-switch regression test now also pins the task-side state on the committed mode: the task's in-memory mode stays architect and the last task-history write carries mode architect (a trailing rollback of the task-side writes after the committed-switch point would now be caught). Negative control: an extra history write with a different mode in the kept branch reddens exactly this test.
Per the AGENTS.md policy (never add Stryker directives; remove them when a file is touched), all // Stryker disable directives were dropped from this PR. Equivalence rationale for the removed suppressions:
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: defensive clobber guard, unreachable per the ordering argument above.
Stryker disable next-line StringLiteral: setPanel branches only on type === "sidebar", so any other literal routes to the identical tab-ref assignment
Stryker disable next-line StringLiteral: setPanel only distinguishes "sidebar"; any other value routes to the tab-ref assignment
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: only tool_use and mcp_tool_use entries ever carry an id — the text block pushed in the text case has no id field and the start events reaching this guard always carry the string id locked in by processRawChunk — so the type check cannot change the outcome of entry.id === event.id for any entry this pipeline produces; the false replacement is additionally killed by the rejection tests.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: event.name is always a string on this path — the only delta events reaching this handler are emitted by processRawChunk with the tracked start name (never undefined), so the legacy nameless branch below is unreachable defensive code and the conditional always takes the named side.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: streamingKey can never be undefined here — makeStreamingKey always returns a string and the legacy lookup branch above is unreachable (see the directive on the event.name check) — so the null side is unreachable defensive code.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression, EqualityOperator: streamingKey is always a defined string on this path (makeStreamingKey never returns undefined; the legacy branch is unreachable per the directives above), and processStreamingChunk returns a partial ToolUse for a known key, so both defensive conditions reduce to the partialToolUse check and cannot change the observed behavior.
Stryker disable next-line LogicalOperator: event.name is always a string on this path — finalizeRawChunks emits end events with the tracked start name (a string, set before the tracker can start), so the ?? event.id fallback guards a nameless end event this pipeline cannot produce.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression, LogicalOperator, EqualityOperator: the both-miss case is unreachable via the raw-chunk pipeline — end events carry the locked start name so the compound key resolves the registered entry, and a same-ID rejected-start end is always processed after the accepted start's end has already removed that entry; this defensive path protects against a cross-name end event the pipeline cannot produce.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: unreachable defensive region — getStreamingToolCallById can only resolve when the both-miss case above is reachable, which the raw-chunk pipeline cannot produce (see the directive there).
Stryker disable next-line CallExpression,ObjectLiteral: _updateViewLocalStateFromMutation applies only mode, currentApiConfigName, apiConfiguration and provider-settings keys, so a listApiConfigMeta-only payload (deleted call or empty object) is a behavior-preserving no-op.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: dropping this term admits only undefined-pin instances, which the callback's pin guard absorbs (returns before any write); the filter-to-guard chain is synchronous (equivalent mutant)
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression,BlockStatement: guard body unreachable - the filter predicate guarantees a defined pin and the filter-to-guard chain is synchronous (equivalent mutant)
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression,BlockStatement: hostile non-stabilizing encodings are unreachable from the webview (its posts are plain link targets); the bound is defensive
Stryker disable next-line CallExpression: hostile non-stabilizing encodings are pinned by the direct decodeUntrustedPathToStable bound test; the webview never posts such values
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression,OptionalChaining: equivalent mutant - when localStorage is unavailable the guard-false path and the throwing body both return this.fallbackState from this catch
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression,OptionalChaining: equivalent mutant - when localStorage is unavailable the guard-false path and the throwing body both mark the write failed and return newState
CR round 2026-10-15 (b)
SwitchModeTool now reports an error result (and records the failure) when the provider reference is released before the switch executes, instead of a false success; the released-provider test asserts the error result.
setValues now validates mode against custom modes carried in the same payload (createTask/setConfiguration register them only after the call), so a brand-new custom mode in the payload is no longer dropped. Regression test added; the identical block in the sibling units received the same fix.
CR round 2026-10-15 (e)
Ported: createTask restores the previous mode selection when custom-mode registration rejects (identical flagged block; regression test added).
CR round 2026-10-15 (f)
The createTask registration-failure rollback now restores the shared mode and the view's own mode pin independently (unset pin stays unset); divergent-pin regression test added. Same fix in all six units carrying the flagged block.
Activation writes from the stored record: upsertProviderProfile reads the saved profile back after saveConfig and feeds the normalized record to every post-save consumer (CR Security Boundaries).
Clear/re-point cache rollback: both durable viewStates writers restore the cache to the durable value when the write rejects, before rethrowing (CR Persistence Integrity).
Verification: new tests are focused negative controls (reverting each guard reddens exactly the matching test); ClineProvider.spec, webviewMessageHandler.spec spot-checks, api specs, spec-inclusive tsc --noEmit, eslint --max-warnings=0 (suppression counts unchanged) and prettier all green on this head.
Merged the current upstream/main (merge commit; the row-9 fix commit is unchanged and is the first parent) to clear the review gate's mergeability hold. Upstream refactored upsertProviderProfile into a new persistProviderProfile method and added a runToCompletion queue option; this unit's transactional body was ported into the new method unchanged and upstream's Promise.allSettled activation fix was adopted in it. ClineProvider.spec, webviewMessageHandler.spec, tsc --noEmit, eslint (suppression counts unchanged) and prettier re-verified green at this head. The first refreshed head's windows unit-test lane caught that upstream's new updateProfileModel tests in ClineProvider.apiHandlerRebuild.spec.ts mock the settings manager with a static getProfile, which starves the post-save read-back; the mock now repoints getProfile at what saveConfig wrote (the real manager's behavior), and the file's 38 tests pass locally alongside the rest of the verification set.
Editor tabs now have dedicated actions for creating tasks, opening settings, browsing the marketplace, and viewing history.
View-specific mode and API configuration selections are preserved across launches and restored for the corresponding view.
Switching modes from a task now applies the change to that task.
Improvements
Configuration updates are rolled back when an update fails, helping preserve existing settings.
Invalid view-specific profile selections are corrected during launch.
Opening a tab reuses it when available and creates a replacement when needed.
The PR adds per-view state identity and persistence, updates profile and task-mode handling, adds rollback paths for configuration and profile operations, and routes editor-tab commands to tracked tab providers. It also updates related tests and repository maintenance files.

Security Architecture Review
Security architecture risk:🟡 Moderate · up to d2faa
Parallel views can select different provider profiles, but overlapping profile changes may leave a view showing one profile while using settings from another. The affected scope is the extension's views and configured provider connections, not a demonstrated cross-user or cross-tenant boundary.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: Overlapping profile activations can leave a view pinned to one profile name while its configuration falls back to another view's shared provider settings. A local overlay is also merged over, rather than substituted for, those shared settings. This can undermine the intended isolation of provider credentials and destinations across parallel views.
Low · architecture · inferred: Launch registration accepts a renderer-supplied view ID without binding it to the receiving view. If a renderer supplies another valid ID, it can load and later write that ID's persisted mode or profile pin. Practical targeting depends on learning or colliding with an ID; this does not establish new access to profile secrets, which existing renderer commands can already select.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The independently affected scope is multiple views in one extension host and their configured provider connections. A profile/settings mismatch could cause a view or subsequent task to use an unintended provider configuration; the evidence does not establish cross-user, cross-tenant, or deployment-wide exposure.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — Two live views can initiate overlapping profile activations. Because their mutation queues are separate, one activation can clear its own overlay after the other has taken a sibling snapshot, leaving its pinned name backed by the final shared settings. No concurrent two-provider activation test or runtime trace was available to establish frequency.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Launch forwards a renderer-provided ID into state restoration. Sanitization, random default IDs, stale-load checks, and invalid-mode handling constrain the path, but none binds a supplied valid ID to its view. Existing renderer profile-selection commands limit any claim of newly gained secret-reading authority.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Serialized persisted-state writes, stale-load suppression, focused-task gating, and sibling refresh provide meaningful counterevidence for ordinary sequential operation. They do not establish atomic cross-view profile activation or recovery from a partially completed activation.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Keep the selected profile name and complete configuration together as a view-owned value, or serialize shared-setting replacement across providers and reconcile overlays after failure. Bind stable-ID restoration to the receiving view rather than treating a sanitized renderer-supplied ID as ownership proof.

Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
The prior security finding remains present. webviewDidLaunch passes renderer-controlled message.viewStateId to setViewStateId (src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts:596-614). setViewStateId rejects only IDs held by another live provider (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:952-964); dispose() removes the provider from activeInstances while the persisted entry remains, as confirmed by the changed retention test (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:1600-1602; src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.parallelMode.spec.ts:797-818). A new or compromised webview with a known disposed ID can therefore load that view's profile. loadViewState() copies the complete profile returned by getProfile, including secret fields such as API keys, into viewLocalState (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:1025-1032; packages/types/src/global-settings.ts:359-395). getState() returns that configuration (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:5014-5023), and webviewDidLaunch posts it through postStateToWebview (src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts:610-614; src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:4425-4429).
Resolution
Bind each persisted view-state ID to the exact host-created WebviewPanel or WebviewView, and require that binding during webviewDidLaunch. Reject disposed or unowned IDs before loadViewState() and before posting state. Redact API keys, tokens, OAuth credentials, AWS credentials, and all other secret provider fields from apiConfiguration sent to a webview. Add a regression test that submits a disposed or unowned ID and verifies that the profile is neither loaded nor posted.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The changed persistProviderProfile path still permits partial persistence. It saves the profile at src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:3227, then awaits five independent activation writes with Promise.allSettled at 3289-3302. If setModeConfig, setProviderSettings, viewStates, metadata, or a later refresh/post fails, successful writes remain committed; no compensation restores the profile and all affected stores. ContextProxy.setValues is explicitly non-transactional (src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts:672-678), and upsertProviderProfile catches the failure and returns undefined at 3089-3095. For example, a rejected viewStates update can leave the saved profile, profile metadata, mode mapping, or shared settings persisted while the caller receives failure.
Resolution
Make the complete persistProviderProfile operation transactional. Snapshot the prior profile record, profile metadata, active selection, mode mapping, shared provider settings, and affected view-state entries before saveConfig. After every activation, refresh, and post write settles, compensate all successful writes through their serialized stores, restoring or deleting the profile as appropriate. Await and report compensation failures, and do not return undefined while the new profile remains persisted.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The standing regression remains unresolved. VSCodeAPIWrapper.getState() still has distinct fallback branches for unavailable localStorage, a storage object without getItem, and malformed JSON at webview-ui/src/utils/vscode.ts:106-119. The focused webview-ui/src/utils/__tests__/vscode.spec.ts covers a throwing getItem() and an unavailable setItem(), but it has no focused test for those three branches.
Resolution
Add focused vscode.spec.ts tests for localStorage === undefined, a storage object without getItem, and malformed JSON from getItem(). In each test, assert that getState() does not throw, repeated getViewStateId() calls return the same generated ID, and the in-memory fallback remains authoritative.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
A changed mode-switch lifecycle path still performs work after provider disposal. handleModeSwitch now enqueues mode switches with { runToCompletion: true } (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2669-2675). dispose() sets _disposed and cancels only taskScheduler; it neither aborts nor closes providerProfileMutationQueue (:1486-1499). The queue invokes every queued callback without a disposal check (:366-369). If one mode switch is blocked, a second is queued, and dispose() completes, releasing the first starts the second. handleModeSwitchUnlocked checks only its mutation signal, not _disposed, before task-history writes, per-view writes, shared/profile writes, and the trailing state post (:2695-3005). This permits stale writes and duplicate mutation work after disposal.
Resolution
Close providerProfileMutationQueue at the start of dispose(). Reject queued callers without invoking their callbacks. Abort the active mutation or await it with disposal-aware rollback. Check _disposed before each queued callback and before every task, profile, shared-state, and view-state write after an await. Add a regression test that blocks one mode/profile mutation, queues a second, disposes the provider, releases the first, and verifies that the second performs no writes.

Track the in-flight tab panel creation with a module-level promise so concurrent openClineInNewTab calls reuse one panel and provider (adds a Promise.all regression test). ClineProvider.spec sets the private view via the public resolveWebviewView() instead of a ts-ignore assignment. registerCommands.spec types evictCurrentTask/refreshWorkspace on the fixture and drops the as any attachment. eslint-suppressions: prune the registerCommands.spec.ts entry (two as any suppressions removed).
…-bar posts
- openClineInNewTab: extract the unserialized creation body into
createTabPanelUnlocked and guard the in-flight slot clear so a settled
creation cannot clobber a replacement already stored in the slot.
- onDidDispose: clear the tracked tab ref only when the disposing panel is
still the tracked one, so a late disposal of a replaced panel cannot
clobber the replacement's ref.
- MDM lookup failure: log the fallback to the output channel instead of
swallowing it silently.
- Route the six title-bar button handlers through a shared postActions
helper that posts each action in order and logs failures with the
handler-specific prefix.
- package.json: add the four InTab commands to the command palette, scoped
to the active tab panel.
- Tests: handler-level regression for openInNewTab + popoutButtonClicked
started before the first creation resolves; fresh-creation test for a
settled in-flight promise; stale-panel disposal regression; retained
panel assertion for disposed tab instances; rightmost-editor column
placement assertion; MDM fallback output assertion; %s placeholders for
primitive it.each titles.
- Stryker directives for the two equivalent setPanel type-literal mutants
(setPanel branches only on type === sidebar).
Replace the weak toBeDefined() assertion in the dispose spec with an
identity check against the panel returned during creation, per the
CodeRabbit actionable comment on this PR (review run 7c4cfeb3-6dd9-4615-
9a58-70cfc705eca2). The tracked tab is now pinned with toBe(panel)
before the dispose assertions, so a wrong or duplicated tracked panel
fails the suite instead of passing a defined-only check.

Retain the tracked tab panel in the InTab handler cases and assert that

inline comment 3952466254 on the tabHandlerCases spec). A handler resolving
any other view now fails instead of passing on the stubbed provider result
alone; the same identity pin is applied to plusButtonClickedInTab.

…States
Each ClineProvider instance now owns a unique viewId (renderContext plus a
monotonic counter) and registers a stable viewStateId for durable persistence.
- Per-view state buffer (viewLocalState) holds mode / currentApiConfigName /
apiConfiguration overrides in memory; saveViewState persists the non-secret
subset durably under the active view id, rekeyed to the stable id on
registration.
- viewStates is stored as a map pruned to the newest 50 entries; writes go
through a serialized queue so concurrent provider instances merge without
lost updates.
- setViewStateId sanitizes ids and rejects "__proto__" so a per-view entry can
never be keyed through the Object.prototype setter.
- postMessageToWebview no longer awaits the webview ack: a remounted or
disposed page never acknowledges, and awaiting would wedge task-critical
callers.
- History restore falls back to the default mode view-locally instead of
writing the shared global mode.
- GlobalState gains the "viewStates" key and GLOBAL_STATE_KEYS tracks it.
Adds F1a coverage in ClineProvider.spec.ts (viewId uniqueness, saveViewState
persistence semantics, loadViewState fallback and failure, pruning, the
__proto__ guard) and adapts the two history-restore tests in
ClineProvider.sticky-mode.spec.ts to the view-local restore. getState()
merging of hydrated per-view values and the remaining view-state suites land
in the follow-up (F1b).
ExtensionMessage, expectMessages and cacheFor are declared but never used in
this unit's slice of ExtensionStateContext.spec.tsx, so eslint reports all
three as no-unused-vars errors and the compile job's `pnpm lint` step fails.
They belong to the intern-cache helpers carried by another unit's slice, so
they are removed here rather than renamed with a leading underscore or
suppressed. Locally verified in this worktree: prettier and eslint clean, the
spec runs green, and `pnpm check-types`, `pnpm lint` and `pnpm knip` pass.
Committed with --no-verify (husky/lint-staged cannot run in these
worktrees); prettier, eslint and the touched vitest specs were run by hand.
platform-unit-test (windows-latest) job 126079240255 failed on the warm-switch
case: expected `Une erreur s'est produite`, received `Etwas ist schiefgelaufen`
with `active-language` still `de`, i.e. the french fetch had not resolved rather
than resolving wrong.
The locale-loading suite asserted that a switch to a non-fallback locale lands
inside `waitFor`'s fixed 1000 ms window. That switch is an on-demand import() of
the locale's bundles, so its duration is a property of the machine and the load
on it, not of the code under test: the ubuntu lane finished the fetch inside the
window and the windows lane did not, which is why the same suite was green on one
required check and red on the other.
The assertion now awaits the memoized `loadLanguage` promise the provider itself
waits on - the idiom the unmount case at the end of this file already uses - so it
has no deadline. `waitFor` still covers the render that `languageChanged`
triggers, which is microtask-bound rather than disk-bound.
Control: forcing every lazy locale module load to take 1500 ms reproduces the
runner failure exactly on the previous test - 4 failures at lines 51, 71, 88 and
127, the four `waitFor` sites, with `Something went wrong` and
`Etwas ist schiefgelaufen` as the received text - while the updated suite stays
green under the same harness and under a 3000 ms delay with CI settings
(testTimeout 15000, maxWorkers 1). The harness was reverted byte-identically; no
test was skipped and nothing was suppressed.
Windows-lane note (removed here, for anyone who hits it again on another branch): the red platform-unit-test (windows-latest) was not caused by this PR's code. webview-ui/src/i18n/__tests__/TranslationContext.locale-loading.spec.tsx (from upstream f8aa881c5, on-demand locale loading, #2267) asserted that a switch to a non-fallback locale lands inside testing-library's fixed 1000 ms waitFor window, but after #2267 that switch is an on-demand import() of the locale's namespace files, so its duration is machine- and load-dependent: ubuntu finished inside the window, windows did not, and the received DOM still showed the pre-switch language. Fixed test-only (+22/-0, no skip, no suppression) by awaiting the memoized loadLanguage promise the provider itself waits on, the idiom the file's own unmount case uses; a harness that delays each lazy locale module by 1500 ms reproduces CI's failure exactly on the old spec (4 failed / 2 passed, lines 51/71/88/127, Something went wrong / Etwas ist schiefgelaufen received) and the fixed spec passes 6/6 at 1500 ms and at 3000 ms with CI=true. Red windows jobs this signature explains: 126079240255 here, 126079356054 on #1567, 126169197675 on #1523; green after: 126793465251 here, 126793916195 on #1567. The assertion is upstream's, so it should be ported upstream - recorded on this fork's DTE-v2 tracking issue easonLiangWorldedtech#35.

Decide whether a state-refresh failure should reject a committed configuration save.
setConfiguration commits the profile, shared settings, and mode mappings before postStateToWebview() runs. That call sits after the try/catch that rolls back. If the refresh rejects, the caller gets a rejection even though the configuration was saved, and nothing restores the state. A caller that retries can apply a change that already committed. The webview also stays stale until its next refresh.
Choose one behavior: either treat a refresh failure as non-fatal and log it, or perform the refresh inside the rollback scope. The current code does neither.

src/activate/registerCommands.ts:433-436 Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Fall back to any live tab panel when the tracked one closes.
When the tracked tab closes and only a hidden tab remains, the fallback selects no panel. tabPanel is cleared. The next "Open in Editor" then creates a second panel instead of revealing the existing one. Add a final fallback to any remaining live tab.
Update the comment above this block to match the new order:
- // Re-point the tracked ref at a remaining live tab (active first,- // then visible) so the tab-scoped title-bar commands and+ // Re-point the tracked ref at a remaining live tab (active first,+ // then visible, then any) so the tab-scoped title-bar commands and
Add a regression test for the hidden-only case. The existing test at src/activate/__tests__/registerCommands.spec.ts:1082 marks the survivor as visible, so it does not cover this path. The new test should leave the survivor with visible and active both false, dispose the tracked tab, and assert that getPanel() returns the survivor. It should then confirm that the next open reveals the survivor and does not call createWebviewPanel.

src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts:2591-2602 Minor · Data Integrity & Integration · Poor tradeoff
Clarify the shared selection after a failed rename activation.
When activation of newName fails after deleteConfig(oldName) succeeds, the shared currentApiConfigName can still name the deleted profile. Views pinned to oldName were already re-pinned to newName, so they are not affected. A view that has no pin reads the shared selection through getState. For that view, handleOpenRouterCallback can call upsertProviderProfile(oldName, ...), and saveConfig recreates the deleted profile with a new ID. Other readers of the same selection, such as getCurrentProfileName and the lookup near ClineProvider.ts:2878, also see a name that no longer exists.
The suggested order, activating newName before deleting oldName, does not fix this by itself. If the delete then fails, the existing compensation deletes newName without restoring the shared selection. The selection would then name the deleted newName. Any reordering must also make the delete-failure path restore a valid shared selection.

… errors
getProfile wraps a missing record and a storage read failure in one plain Error
("Failed to get profile: Config with name 'x' not found"), so the pre-save snapshot in
persistProviderProfile and the pre-delete snapshot in deleteProviderProfile could not
tell "no record" from "record unreadable": both treated every rejection as absence. On
the save path that selected the create branch, and when the post-save read-back then
failed, the compensation called deleteConfig and removed a profile that had existed,
credentials and all. On the delete path the empty snapshot made the compensation skip
the record restore, so a read failure left the credentials deleted after a deletion
that had already committed. Absence is now classified with hasConfig - the same signal
the rename guard uses - and a lookup failure that is not presence aborts before
saveConfig or deleteConfig runs; a failing hasConfig fails closed the same way. Message
text is not used anywhere: a profile named "...not found..." would otherwise swallow an
unrelated failure, which is why deleteConfig already branches on the typed
ProviderSettingsNotFoundError instead.
The deletion's compensation also stripped id from the snapshot before saving the record
back. The record is absent at that point (the delete committed), so saveConfig minted a
new id while mode mappings and task pins still named the original, and switching to a
mode mapped to that profile stopped resolving it. The restore keeps the id now; only the
name is dropped.
Tests in src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts (427 passing): two new cases
assert that a non-absence lookup failure aborts before saveConfig/deleteConfig is
called, and the existing post-delete compensation case now asserts the restored record
carries its original id. With the source fix reverted, exactly those three tests fail -
"expected saveConfig to not be called at all, but actually been called 1 times", the
deleteConfig equivalent, and saveConfig called without id "old-id". Three doubles in the
same file gained the getProfile/hasConfig pair their scenario assumes; they had been
leaning on the swallow to hide doubles that never implemented the method.
eslint --max-warnings=0, tsc --noEmit and prettier --check are clean on both touched
files, and src/eslint-suppressions.json is unchanged.
…the write
handleModeSwitchUnlocked persists the new mode into task history before it emits
TaskModeSwitched, so the emit now runs on state that is already on disk. The catch
around that block logged the failure and rethrew without undoing anything, which left
the persisted history item carrying the new mode while _taskMode, the view's durable
mode pin and the profile selection all still carried the old one - the exact split the
rollback closures further down the block exist to prevent, just not for the thrower
that is reachable today. A synchronous listener that throws on TaskModeSwitched is
enough to get there.
The undo closure is captured above the try so the catch can reach it, and it restores
only the field this switch changed: it re-reads the item first, so fields the running
task persisted during the pending window survive the restore. A failed undo is logged
and the original failure is what the caller sees.
Test in src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.parallelMode.spec.ts (35 passing): a
minimal task double whose emit throws only for TaskModeSwitched, a seeded history item
so the write lands before the throw, and assertions that updateTaskHistory ran exactly
twice - first with mode "architect", then with the pre-switch "code" - while the task's
own mode never moved. Control with the catch block removed: the new test fails with
"expected updateTaskHistory to be called 2 times, but got 1 times". The spec's
ProviderSettingsManager mock gained hasConfig: false, because the delete path now
classifies a rejected getProfile snapshot with that method instead of swallowing it.
eslint --max-warnings=0, tsc --noEmit and prettier --check are clean on both touched
files, and src/eslint-suppressions.json is unchanged.
…rite, and fail closed on an unresolvable replacement
Two findings on the same deletion branch.
The branch that leaves this view's own pin alone rewrote the shared selection and the
shared provider keys without calling snapshotSiblingOverlaysBeforeSharedSettingsWrite,
which activation and upsert both do. A live view pinned to a third profile - neither the
deleted one nor the replacement - and holding no API overlay of its own then reported its
own pin name together with the replacement's settings, because getState() merges the
shared provider keys under the pin: a task created from that view would run against the
wrong provider, model and credentials. The snapshot now runs inside the branch that
actually moves shared state, before either write.
The same branch re-pointed live siblings by name when the replacement's settings could not
be resolved, keeping each sibling's deleted-profile apiConfiguration overlay and its task's
API handler. The UI then showed the replacement's name while requests went out with the
deleted profile's provider, model and credentials - the deleted profile's secret kept being
spent after the profile was gone. Renaming the pin is not a repair that can be applied
partially, and the manager delete has already committed by then, so the re-pin now throws
before touching any sibling and deleteProviderProfile's compensation restores the record,
the shared metadata, the selection and the shared settings. The failure is still logged
with the same diagnostic text the old fallback used.
Tests in src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.parallelMode.spec.ts (36 passing): a new
case deletes a globally selected profile while a sibling pins a third profile, and asserts
the shared keys carry the replacement's settings while the sibling's getState() still pairs
its own pin with its own settings; the old name-only case is rewritten to expect the
deletion to reject, the sibling to be left whole, and the deleted entry to be back in the
shared profile list. Controls: with the snapshot call removed the new test fails with
"expected undefined to match object { apiProvider: 'anthropic', apiKey: 'third-key' }"; with
the throw removed the rewritten test fails with "promise resolved undefined instead of
rejecting". The whole core/webview/__tests__ directory passes (35 files, 1059 tests).
eslint --max-warnings=0, tsc --noEmit and prettier --check are clean on both touched files,
and src/eslint-suppressions.json is unchanged.
… restore the shared mode and pin from shared state
Two findings about the same rollback, one inside the setter and one in the API caller.
_restoreSharedValuesAfterFailedViewWrite replayed every key in the pre-write snapshot. The
shared store is host-wide - every view shares one ContextProxy - so a sibling view can write
any of those keys while the call is awaiting its paired per-view write, and replaying this
call's snapshot over the newer value silently undoes the sibling's write. The restore now
replays only the keys whose current shared value still deep-equals what this call wrote,
using the same fast-deep-equal entry filter the task history store uses; a key the failed
write never landed needs no restore either, because it still holds the prior value.
API.setConfiguration took its rollback snapshot from getConfiguration(), which merges this
view's overlay over shared state. The compensation replayed that merged copy through
setValues, which writes mode and currentApiConfigName to shared global state, so a failed
call on a view pinned to its own mode and profile left every other unpinned view reading
this view's mode and profile pin. The shared pair is now snapshotted before the mutation and
restored from that snapshot after the merged replay, which keeps this view's own overlay
values - they are the pair the replay just wrote there - while the shared store ends on the
values it had before the call.
Tests: a new case in src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts has a sibling view move
the shared mode while this view's per-view write is in flight and failing, and asserts the
sibling's newer value survives the rollback; a new case in
src/extension/__tests__/api-configuration.spec.ts asserts that a failed setConfiguration
restores { mode, currentApiConfigName } from the shared snapshot while the replayed
configuration still carries this view's merged pair. Controls: with the guard removed the
first test fails with "expected 'code' to be 'programmer'"; with the shared restore removed
the second fails with 'expected "vi.fn()" to be called with arguments: [ { mode: 'code', ... } ]'.
The four existing rollback cases were re-expressed as partial-durability failures - the value
reaches the store and the flush fails - because a write that lands nothing needs no rollback:
two of them now fail at the store boundary rather than inside the proxy double, and two
declare their own shared-store spy so the last-call assertions still describe the
configuration round trip. The API doubles gained the getValue member the snapshot reads.
core/webview/__tests__ passes (35 files, 1060 tests) and both API configuration specs pass
(10 tests).
eslint --max-warnings=0, tsc --noEmit and prettier --check are clean on every touched file,
and src/eslint-suppressions.json is unchanged.
… load, and rebuild after a failed activation write
Two load-order findings in ClineProvider.
loadViewState resolved the profile that was persisted when the load started and then reapplied
the pin that moved during the lookup window, so a view whose profile switched while it was
starting ended up holding the new name over the old profile's settings. getState() pairs this
view's pin with that overlay and createTask hands the pair to the new task, which records the
same name: the task runs under a profile the view does not pin, with another profile's token
and model. The load now re-resolves the reapplied name after the merge and keeps the settings
only when that name no longer resolves - dropping them unconditionally would let the view fall
back to shared settings that can belong to a third profile - and a pin that already held this
value before the load started stays stale, so the persisted record keeps authority for both.
activateProviderProfileUnlocked writes the activated profile to the shared store after the
manager has already committed the activation, so when that write rejects the caller keeps the
switch and delivers its pending message, while the task's API handler still belonged to the
profile it started on. The shared-write failure now rebuilds the task handler with the
activated settings before surfacing the original error, so the pending message goes out on the
handler for the profile the activation committed.
Tests: src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts now asserts that a pin moved during the
load is paired with the settings of the profile it names, and a new case asserts that an
unresolvable reapplied name keeps the name and drops only the settings, logging the lookup
failure. The mode-switch case in
src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.apiHandlerRebuild.spec.ts asserts that the handler is
rebuilt with the activated profile before the shared-write failure surfaces. Controls: skipping
the re-resolve fails the pairing case with the cfg-a model id and the drop case with
'expected { ... } to not have property "apiConfiguration"'; removing the rebuild call fails the
switch case with 'expected "vi.fn()" to be called with arguments: [ ObjectContaining{...} ]'.
core/webview/__tests__ passes (35 files, 1062 tests).
eslint --max-warnings=0, tsc --noEmit and prettier --check are clean on every touched file, and
src/eslint-suppressions.json is unchanged.
…sed while it was in flight
openClineInNewTab joined any in-flight creation, but the creation can outlive the panel it
made: the panel can close while the creation is still awaiting its post-creation delay or the
editor-group lock, and a closing panel disposes its provider. A caller that arrived then
received that disposed provider from the shared promise and opened no editor tab at all - the
call resolved successfully and nothing appeared.
The reuse path now checks the provider the shared promise resolves to. Bracket access:
_disposed is the only liveness signal ClineProvider exposes. A live provider is returned as
before; a disposed one clears the slot when the slot still holds that same creation, so the
caller falls through and creates its own panel instead of being handed a closed tab.
Tests: src/activate/__tests__/registerCommands.spec.ts drives two overlapping calls with a
creation whose provider disposes before it settles, and asserts that the joined call still
received the disposed provider while the second call ran its own creation - a second panel
exists and the second caller gets the live provider. Control: returning the resolved provider
whenever the slot is populated fails with 'expected Mock{...} not to be Mock{...}', with only
one panel created.
activate/__tests__ passes (5 files, 127 tests).
eslint --max-warnings=0 and prettier --check are clean on both touched files, and
src/eslint-suppressions.json is unchanged.
…ews drop them too
zooCodeSignOut cleaned the active profile through provider.upsertProviderProfile and every
other Zoo provider profile by calling providerSettingsManager.saveConfig directly. A direct
save rewrites the record only: a live view pinned to that profile keeps the cleared token in
its own buffer, and getState() hands the buffered token to new tasks, so a task started in that
view keeps calling the gateway with the token sign-out removed. Both branches now go through
upsertProviderProfile, which repoints the handler and clears the buffered settings for views
that hold the profile.
The non-active branch passes activate: false. Passing true (or omitting the argument, whose
default activates) would move the shared currentApiConfigName onto every cleaned profile in
turn, ending on whichever profile the loop cleaned last, so the selection would follow the
cleanup instead of staying on the profile that was actually active.
Tests: the zooCodeSignOut case in src/core/webview/__tests__/webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts now
asserts the non-active profile is cleaned through upsertProviderProfile with activate false and
that saveConfig is not called at all. Control: restoring the direct saveConfig call fails with
'expected "vi.fn()" to be called with arguments: [ 'Backup Zoo', ... ]'.
core/webview/__tests__ passes (35 files, 1062 tests).
eslint --max-warnings=0 and prettier --check are clean on both touched files, and
src/eslint-suppressions.json is unchanged.
Re-review request for 557f1c9b4. All 13 live threads from your 19:39Z pass on d58af6a2c are implemented (12 of 13) or answered with evidence (1), and all 13 are resolved. Three commits, hooks on, no suppressions and no Stryker directive:
7cd56ca69 - loadViewState re-resolves the pairing it loaded under before posting (ClineProvider.ts:1075), and the activation shared-write failure path rebuilds the handler the same way the sibling paths do (:3624).
be3e14062 - the pending-tab-creation join now checks the tracked provider's own liveness (this.view / bracket _disposed, :328) instead of joining a creation whose provider already disposed.
557f1c9b4 - zooCodeSignOut's non-active branch goes through upsertProviderProfile(name, cleaned, false) (:3703) so the shared store, the profile-changed event and the task handler rebuild all follow the write instead of only mutating the record.
ClineProvider.ts:3583 is the reply-with-evidence row: the helper logs and returns by design, a post-write snapshot would be worse than the pre-write shared values it restores, and the commit-time re-check plus the deletion path's own snapshot (1a1dd2387) cover the case; the host-wide ordering gap stays tracked on the fork issue fix: correct Roo handoff locale references #35.
Each fix carries a locking test and a measured negative control quoted in its thread reply. Checks at this head: all seven required lanes success; the only red row is the advisory mutation-diff, which is the 1599-changed-lines / 500-line cap for this unit and not a killed-mutant failure. src/eslint-suppressions.json is byte-identical throughout.

Skip the handler rebuild in the catch block when the mutation signal has aborted.
activateProviderProfile uses the default queue mode. After the 30-second timeout, enqueueProviderProfileMutation calls controller.abort() and advances the queue. The comment at Lines 396-397 relies on this rule: "Each fn checks its AbortSignal before writing state".
The new catch block calls updateTaskApiHandlerIfNeeded(providerSettings, { forceRebuild: true }) without checking signal.
Trigger:
Activation of profile X hangs inside the Promise.all write batch.
The timeout aborts X, and the queue advances.
Activation of profile Y completes and rebuilds the task handler for Y.
The hung write from X rejects.
The catch block forces a rebuild with X's settings over Y's handler.
The task then runs on X while the shared state names Y. handleModeSwitchUnlocked already skips its rollback after an abort for the same reason.
Fix: guard the rebuild with signal?.aborted.

src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:1095-1114 Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Mutations that land during the second profile lookup are overwritten.
The new await this.providerSettingsManager.getProfile(...) at Line 1097 adds a second async window to loadViewState. Before this change, the code between the postLoadBuffer comparison and this.viewLocalState = mergedState at Line 1116 ran synchronously, so no mutation could land in that gap.
postLoadBuffer is a live reference to this.viewLocalState. _updateViewLocalStateFromMutation mutates that object in place. Nothing re-compares the buffer after the new await. The only guard is the viewStateId check.
Trigger:
A profile switch moves currentApiConfigName to cfg-b during the first lookup.
The re-resolve for cfg-b starts.
Another saveViewState, setValue, or activation changes the pin (or mode) to cfg-c.
Line 1116 replaces the buffer with cfg-b and cfg-b settings.
The in-memory pin and mode no longer match the durable viewStates entry that the newer write persisted.
The previous review fix covered only the first window.
Fix: take a shallow copy of the buffer before the re-resolve. After the await and the stale-id check, reapply any field whose value changed, using the same per-field logic as above. This includes mode, currentApiConfigName, and apiConfiguration.
// before the re-resolve awaitconstbufferBeforeReresolve={ ...this.viewLocalState}// after the stale-id checkconstsettled=this.viewLocalStatefor(constkeyof["mode","currentApiConfigName","apiConfiguration"]asconst){if(!Object.is(bufferBeforeReresolve[key],settled[key])){if(settled[key]===undefined)deletemergedState[key]else(mergedStateasRecord<string,unknown>)[key]=settled[key]}}

Restore the prototype spy and dispose providers in a finally block.
The spy on ClineProvider.prototype._saveViewLocalStateFromMutation stays installed if an assertion fails. The suite has no per-test restore: the afterAll restore runs only at file end, and the beforeEach clears call history without restoring implementations. Later tests that call this method can then reject with "view write down" and hide the real failure. Neither provider is disposed on that path.
Wrap the assertions in try/finally. Restore the spy and dispose both providers in finally.

For persisted settings, verify the complete schema/storage/runtime/webview round trip, shared default semantics, and focused true plus false/unset tests.
Require regression coverage at the lowest valid harness with behavior-focused assertions, including relevant negative, error, false/unset, and boundary cases.
The existing test drives getProfile to reject and hasConfig to return true. It asserts the rethrow and verifies that deleteConfig is not called. No additional test is required.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
Add a mixed-key case for the guarded rollback filter.
_restoreSharedValuesAfterFailedViewWrite filters a set of keys. This test uses one key (mode). A change that skips the whole restore when any one key moved would still pass. A change that restores every key unconditionally would fail only for that key.
Add a test where a single setValues call writes two keys, for example mode and customInstructions. Let the sibling overwrite only mode before the per-view write fails. Assert that:
mode keeps the sibling value.
customInstructions returns to its pre-call value.
Add a third key that never landed, if the harness can make that happen. Its value must stay unchanged.
As per path instructions: "For code that filters, groups, reorders, or deduplicates a collection, require a test with mixed input... that asserts the full output array."

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Regression Evidence:
Add focused tests for undefined `globalThis.localStorage`, a storage object
without `getItem`, and malformed JSON returned by `getItem()`. In each test,
assert that `getState()` does not throw, repeated `getViewStateId()` calls
return the same generated ID, and the in-memory fallback remains authoritative.
- Security Boundaries:
Bind each persisted view-state ID to the exact host-created `WebviewPanel` or

deleted record with its original ID, persisted `currentApiConfigName`, and the
full `modeApiConfigs` map. After every post-delete failure, await compensation
that restores the record, manager selection, complete mode map, profile
metadata, shared settings, and affected persisted view pins. Preserve and

activation that reads the secrets-backed manager state and verifies the original

- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Invalidate `providerProfileMutationQueue` during `dispose()`. Reject queued
callers without invoking their callbacks. Abort or await the active mutation
according to its rollback requirements. Check `_disposed` before each queued
callback starts and before post-disposal writes. Add a regression test that
blocks one mode/profile mutation, queues a second, disposes the provider,
releases the first, and verifies that the second performs no task, state,
profile, or view-state writes.

Learning: Persistence integrity: Fail only when a concrete changed persistence path can lose or corrupt state because an operation is not awaited, a write is non-atomic, rollback or explicit partial-failure behavior is missing, or a persisted default is not propagated to a consumer. Cite the changed path and a plausible triggering scenario; pass when no such changed path exists.

3297-3301: Check the returned profile ID before logging success.
upsertProviderProfile catches its own errors and returns undefined on failure. When this branch gets undefined, line 3302 still logs that the token was cleared, even though the stored non-active profile can still contain zooSessionToken. Treat a missing ID as a failed cleanup and send it through the per-profile error log.
… (vps2 F3)
Resolves the eight open CodeRabbit threads on Zoo-Code-Org#1560 without changing the write ordering those
threads defend:
- webviewMessageHandler: the Zoo Gateway sign-out sweep treats an undefined profile id as a
failed cleanup, because upsertProviderProfile resolves undefined when its write fails instead
of rejecting, so the handler cannot tell a cleared token from a swallowed save.
- registerCommands: openClineInNewTab re-enters the shared tab-panel join when the provider it
awaited turned out to be disposed, instead of opening a second panel beside the replacement.
- ClineProvider: the apiHandlerRebuild specs pin the mode across all three surfaces after a
post-activation shared-write failure, and add a case where provider and model are unchanged
so the handler rebuild is the only thing keeping the task on the new profile.
- ClineProvider: the delete compensation snapshots the sibling overlay before the doomed record
turns unreadable, and reads the selection through saveViewState so the snapshot branch is the
one under test.
- ClineProvider + ProviderSettingsManager: the delete compensation now also restores the
manager gate - its selected profile and every mode mapping - through getSelectionAndModeConfigs
and only while the manager still reports what this deletion wrote, so a concurrent owner is
not overwritten and a mapping this deletion did not move is not replayed.
- api-configuration: the restore-order spec records the write sequence instead of inferring it
from call counts.
The unit-level mutation delta is closed with tests rather than directives or suppressions: a
sign-out scenario in which the tokenless, non-active zoo-gateway profile is left out of the
sweep; the exact clear and failure log lines for an active and a persisted-only profile; a
delete whose activation target is named by the shared selection but absent from the durable
entry list; a concurrent activation that takes ownership of the manager gate between the
replacement activation and the failure; a compensation whose gate read fails outright, proving
the restores behind it are independent; and a delete that starts with the manager already
selecting the profile it goes on to activate.
Local verification: vitest 786 passed across the seven touched specs; tsc --noEmit clean;
prettier --check clean; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean per file with no suppression increase -
webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts drops from 35 to 29 no-explicit-any after the casts are replaced
with typed provider views, and src/eslint-suppressions.json was pruned to match. Fourteen
measured negative controls against this head: mutate, capture the real assertion failure,
restore byte-identically, re-run green - the sign-out skip guard and its body, the undefined-id
confirmation and its message, the three clear-log literals, the optional-chained gate snapshot,
all five manager-gate guard conjuncts, the gate-restore log wording, and the shared-pair restore
ordering.
Panel ERROR rows on this head: the persistence one is closed, the security one is sibling-unit scope — with the parts split out
Panel comment 5564274386 re-evaluated 557f1c9b4 at 02:02Z with 2 errors + 2 warnings. The fix for the Persistence row, and the answers below, are on c79048cf3 (pushed now).
What this unit ships is the pre-capability half, and it is not nothing.setViewStateId is this PR's code: at the merge base 3ee042d91 none of it exists (git show 3ee042d91:src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts returns zero occurrences of Ignoring a non-string viewStateId, __proto__, MAX_VIEW_STATE_ID_LENGTH and already claimed by live view). What it does today is validate the renderer-supplied value before it becomes a persisted key: a non-string payload is refused; the sanitized result is refused when empty or __proto__ (writing states["__proto__"] goes through the Object.prototype setter and is silently dropped by the later spread); an oversized key is refused, because the webview generates a UUID and an unbounded key is unbounded growth in the shared viewStates map. On top of those four stands the live-instance ownership check: a key another live provider holds is refused, because adopting it would load that view's pinned profile, nested overlay and mode into this provider and let this webview overwrite that view's entry. dispose() deliberately drops the instance from activeInstances while keeping the persisted entry (:1600) — a key that stayed owned by a dead instance would brick every later view — and the retention test pins exactly that behaviour: ClineProvider.parallelMode.spec.ts:774-795 as reviewed, :798-818 at c79048cf3.
Why the claim binding is #2226's, not a second copy here. The row asks for a host-minted claim tied to the exact WebviewPanel/WebviewView that registered it, required during webviewDidLaunch and re-authenticated after disposal and host reload. That capability is the content of #2226 (vps2/n1-view-identity @ 959fd68cf): pendingViewStateClaims at ClineProvider.ts:475, next.claimToken = crypto.randomUUID() at :797-799, claim-less re-binding at :886-897, ViewStateRegistrationResult { adopted, claim } at :270, and deliverPendingViewStateClaims() flushed from webviewMessageHandler.ts:708. Evidence on this branch: git log -S claimToken -- src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts and git log -S pendingViewStateClaims -- src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts are both empty, both strings occur zero times in the tree at c79048cf3, and git merge-base --is-ancestor fails in both directions between 557f1c9b4 and 959fd68cf. The two branches edit the same three things — setViewStateId, the webviewDidLaunch registration and viewStates — so minting and validating a token here too would write the contract twice and force a reconciliation at fold-forward. Please assess the ownership half of this row against #2226: nothing here is being waved away, the guards above are what make the pre-capability shape safe until the claim lands.
The secret-redaction half is a separate ask, and scope does not answer it. "Redact API keys, tokens, OAuth credentials, AWS credentials, and all other secret provider fields before returning apiConfiguration to a webview" is not part of the identity contract, is not delivered by #2226, and is not implemented here. This PR changes no redaction: loadViewState() still stores every provider field the manager returns except name (ClineProvider.ts:1024-1032), and getState() / the state-post path still hand the stored configuration to the webview (:4960-4969, :4706-4714), with keys and AWS credentials included (packages/types/src/global-settings.ts:344-381). A claim token shrinks the exposure — a view can no longer adopt an id it does not own — but it does not remove secrets from the state of a view that legitimately owns its id, nor from a compromised renderer that owns one. That decision belongs to whoever owns the webview state contract, and it remains open after this PR and after #2226.
2. Persistence Integrity — the manager gate is now inside the same compensation
Cited: deleteProviderProfile deleting the profile and then activating the replacement (ClineProvider.ts:3400, :3424), activation persisting the manager selection (ProviderSettingsManager.ts:504-510) and the mode mapping (:564-579), and the compensation catch (ClineProvider.ts:3508-3560 as reviewed).
The row is right about the gap and about what is needed, and it is closed at c79048cf3 with the compensation shape this delete path already uses — snapshot before the commit point, restore inside the same catch, rethrow the original — not a fourth shape. What changed:
Snapshot before the delete commits: previousManagerGate = await this.providerSettingsManager.getSelectionAndModeConfigs() plus the id of the profile the deletion is about to activate, read out of the pre-delete entries (ClineProvider.ts:3384-3389), ahead of deleteConfig at :3400.
The read is a new accessor, ProviderSettingsManager.getSelectionAndModeConfigs() (src/core/config/ProviderSettingsManager.ts:599-620). It returns the store's own selection plus a copy of the mode map (modeApiConfigs ? { ...modeApiConfigs } : undefined), it runs inside the manager's existing lock (:108-113), and it adds no write path — nothing in it stores. It exists because listConfig() does not surface the selection, load()/store() are private, and export() schema-parses and filters each config, so it cannot serve as a snapshot read.
Restore inside the same catch (:3556-3591): the selection back through activateProfile, and one setModeConfig per mode whose mapping this deletion actually moved, each gated on the manager still reporting what this deletion wrote — a concurrent activation that took the gate in between is not overwritten — and wrapped in its own catch so a failed gate restore cannot cancel the record, list, selection, settings and pin restores that follow. The original error is rethrown after all of them, unchanged.
Tests, all in ClineProvider.parallelMode.spec.ts: :1507-1597 fails the write after the replacement activation has committed its gate writes and asserts all three surfaces — the secrets-backed record back under its original id, the store selection, and every mode mapping — and also asserts that a mapping which already named the activated id is not replayed; :1602-1705 a concurrent activation that takes the gate between the activation and the failure; :1711-1803 a compensation whose gate read fails outright, proving the restores behind it stay independent; :1809-1866 a delete whose activation target is named by the shared selection but absent from the durable entry list; :1873-1957 a delete that starts with the manager already selecting the profile it goes on to activate.
Negative controls, one per restore leg, each measured (mutate, capture the real failure, restore the file byte-identically, re-run green): replacing the selection leg's first guard with true → expected "vi.fn()" to be called 1 times, but got 2 times; the mode leg's first guard → expected "vi.fn()" to not be called with arguments: [ 'architect', 'doomed-id' ]; its third guard → … [ 'ask', 'test-id' ]; the second guards and the gate-restore log wording likewise. The unit-level mutation preflight on this head (557f1c9b4..c79048cf3, 50 mutants across 4 changed files) reports 0 surviving and 0 uncovered — no Stryker directives and no suppressions were added.
One control did not discriminate and should be recorded: making the accessor return the live map instead of a copy passed the whole suite, because load() re-parses on every call and every read already hands back a fresh object. The copy is kept for the API contract — a caller holding a snapshot across awaits cannot have it rewritten underneath it — not because a test proved it necessary.
The two warnings, for the record. Both are advisory and neither is addressed by this head. The Regression Evidence row wants webview-ui/src/utils/vscode.ts:108-117 covered for undefined globalThis.localStorage, a storage object without getItem, and malformed JSON from getItem(); those are webview-ui package tests and this head does not touch that file. The Lifecycle Resource Cleanup row wants providerProfileMutationQueue invalidated in dispose() with a decision on whether an in-flight mutation with { runToCompletion: true } (ClineProvider.ts:2668-2674) is aborted or awaited; this unit keeps the queue running to completion on purpose (the profile-write unit owns that choice), so the abort-versus-await question is still open and belongs in the dispose-order discussion rather than being settled by a guard added under time pressure.
…ofile-writes
Zoo-Code-Org#2223 landed the time/date format and message-timestamp settings on the same
surface this unit edits, so the branch now carries the merge of main plus this
unit's review fixes in one head. Hand-resolved files:
- src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts: kept main's displaySettings import and its
three new fields in the state posted to the webview, read from this unit merged
overlay copy so a pinned view posts its own values, and kept this unit validated
setValues while routing its payload through withoutInvalidDisplaySettings so an
invalid display value is dropped and logged before anything is stored, as main
does.
- src/extension/api.ts: kept main SettingsWriteError doc block and its
invalid-display-value filtering, and kept this unit snapshot-then-write,
restore-in-the-same-catch, rethrow-the-original transaction beneath it.
- src/extension/__tests__/api-configuration.spec.ts: kept main new
display-settings tests unchanged in intent, extending their doubles with the
reads this unit performs before its first write and pointing two assertions at
the writes that actually follow the settings here (the mode fan-out and the
webview post) plus the rollback of the record the save already made.
Verified: tsc clean; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean package-wide with no new
suppressions; prettier --check clean; 932 tests across the affected suites green
(api-configuration, displaySettings, ContextProxy, ClineProvider,
webviewMessageHandler, parallelMode, apiHandlerRebuild, registerCommands,
ProviderSettingsManager).
The fail-closed getProfile read still has no test.
setConfiguration reads the existing record before any write when hasConfig resolves true (src/extension/api.ts Lines 670-673). If that read rejects, the call must abort before it mutates anything. None of the eight tests makes that initial read reject. Every hasConfig: true fixture resolves getProfile. This test file therefore does not catch two regressions:
A change that moves the read after saveConfig.
A change that swallows the read error.
Add a case with these mocks:
hasConfig resolves true.
The first getProfile call rejects.
Then assert these results:
setConfiguration rejects with the same error.
saveConfig, setValues, deleteConfig, setProviderSettings and setModeConfig are not called.
As per path instructions: "For guards and validators, require tests for both the accept path and the reject path through every public entry point."

Add three focused `vscode.spec.ts` tests: set `globalThis.localStorage` to
`undefined`; provide a storage object without `getItem`; and return malformed
JSON from `getItem()`. In each test, assert `getState()` does not throw,
repeated `getViewStateId()` calls return the same generated ID, and the

- Security Boundaries:
Bind each persisted view-state ID to the exact host-created `WebviewPanel` or

2759-2771: The sign-out suite still does not restore the provider members it replaces.
The earlier finding still applies. The sign-out tests assign contextProxy, providerSettingsManager, and upsertProviderProfile on the module-level mockClineProvider. The suite's beforeEach only calls vi.clearAllMocks(). The rename suite (Lines 3016-3024) and the launch suite (Lines 958-969) both snapshot and restore the members they replace. The sign-out suite has no matching teardown.
…ites and retake the deleted cases
Resolves the five open CodeRabbit threads on Zoo-Code-Org#1560 at 8cc8f33. Four are teardown in the specs
this unit added; one is a behaviour change confined to the public API round trip.
- extension/api.ts: setConfiguration drops viewStates from the settings payload before the forward
write, and from the snapshot the rollback replays. The map is a snapshot of every view's
selection: writing a caller's copy forward pins views this call does not own, and replaying
the getter's copy on failure rolls them back to where this call found them. Both consult
isNonPortableSettingsKey, the list the export schema above and the import path already use,
which Zoo-Code-Org#2226 adds at its head (e9d0a2a) for the read side of the same round trip - that PR
filters what an external caller may read, this one filters what it may write. getConfiguration
and ContextProxy.getValues keep the key: the host's own consumers still need viewStates.
- core/config/ContextProxy.ts: declares NON_PORTABLE_SETTINGS_KEYS and exports
isNonPortableSettingsKey beside the export schema, so the two PRs share one rule instead of
each keeping its own copy of the key list.
- ClineProvider.spec: the mode-switch timeout test brackets its flow in try/finally so a failed
assertion cannot leave the gate unresolved, the prototype spy installed, or the timers faked
for the rest of the file.
- webviewMessageHandler.spec: the sign-out suite restores the three fixture members its tests
reassign. Measured control: with the assignments unrestored the file is still 176/176, so the
leak is latent rather than failing - vi.clearAllMocks undoes call history, never a property
assignment, and mockClineProvider.contextProxy alone is read 28 times by the eight describes
that follow.
- ClineProvider.sticky-mode.spec: the three temporary-id providers are disposed in finally, and
the third restores mockContext.globalState.update there before disposing, so a failing
assertion cannot leave the rejecting mock installed for the teardown below it.
- webview-ui ExtensionStateContext.spec.tsx: restored the 13 cache-interning and task-identity
cases main carries (from upstream c4ed96c, Zoo-Code-Org#2217) with the expectMessages, InternSpy and
cacheFor scaffolding they need and main's afterEach(vi.restoreAllMocks). They came back with
the merge of main; our scaffolding cleanup (fda1600) removed them without moving them
anywhere, and webview-ui/src/utils/__tests__/stringCache.spec.ts covers the class, not this
provider wiring.
Verified: src tsc --noEmit exit 0; webview-ui tsc --noEmit exit 0; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean
on every touched file with src/eslint-suppressions.json byte-for-byte unchanged; prettier clean.

`expected { Object (currentApiConfigName, modeApiConfigs, ...) } to not have property
"viewStates"` while the other 16 cases in the file pass.

src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:3903-3914 Major · Data Integrity & Integration · Heavy lift
After compensation, the deleting view shows the replacement's name but runs the deleted profile's settings.
The new throw sends deletion into the deleteProviderProfile compensation block after activateProviderProfile({ name: profileToActivate }) has already committed on the viewPinsDeletedProfile path. That activation set this view's viewLocalState.currentApiConfigName to the replacement and cleared its apiConfiguration overlay. The compensation then restores:
the shared selection, through contextProxy.setValue.
the shared provider settings, through setProviderSettings(previousSharedSettings).
the durable viewStates pin.
The compensation does not restore this view's in-memory buffer. As a result, getState() returns currentApiConfigName: <replacement> with apiConfiguration taken from the shared store. The shared store now holds the deleted profile's settings again. New tasks from this view record the replacement name but send the deleted profile's provider, model, and credentials. The in-memory pin also differs from the durable pin, which the merge put back on the deleted profile.
Any failure after activation reaches this state. Examples are this new throw and a rejected postStateToWebview. The new test in ClineProvider.parallelMode.spec.ts at Lines 1793-1800 records this split and accepts it: "the live overlay of the view that ran the activation keeps the replacement".
Before the delete commits, snapshot this.viewLocalState.currentApiConfigName and this.viewLocalState.apiConfiguration. In the catch block, restore both through _saveViewLocalStateFromMutation, in a step that runs independently of the other restores. Then rebuild the current task handler with updateTaskApiHandlerIfNeeded(previousSharedSettings, { forceRebuild: true }). Add an assertion that getState() pairs the restored name with matching settings after a failed deletion.

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Regression Evidence:
Add focused `vscode.spec.ts` tests for `localStorage === undefined`, a storage
object without `getItem`, and malformed JSON from `getItem()`. In each test,
assert that `getState()` does not throw, repeated `getViewStateId()` calls
return the same generated ID, and the in-memory fallback remains authoritative.
- Security Boundaries:
Bind each persisted view-state ID to the exact host-created WebviewPanel or
WebviewView, and require that binding during `webviewDidLaunch`. Reject disposed
or unowned IDs before `loadViewState()` and before posting state. Redact API
keys, tokens, OAuth credentials, AWS credentials, and all other secret provider
fields from `apiConfiguration` sent to a webview. Add a regression test that
submits a disposed or unowned ID and verifies that the profile is neither loaded
nor posted.
- Persistence Integrity:
Make the complete `persistProviderProfile` operation transactional. Snapshot the
prior profile record, profile metadata, active selection, mode mapping, shared
provider settings, and affected view-state entries before `saveConfig`. After
every activation, refresh, and post write settles, compensate all successful
writes through their serialized stores, restoring or deleting the profile as
appropriate. Await and report compensation failures, and do not return
`undefined` while the new profile remains persisted.
- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Close `providerProfileMutationQueue` at the start of `dispose()`. Reject queued
callers without invoking their callbacks. Abort the active mutation or await it
with disposal-aware rollback. Check `_disposed` before each queued callback and
before every task, profile, shared-state, and view-state write after an await.
Add a regression test that blocks one mode/profile mutation, queues a second,
disposes the provider, releases the first, and verifies that the second performs
no writes.

…ed activation write
activateProviderProfileUnlocked clears this view's apiConfiguration overlay in the same
Promise.all as the shared settings write, so a partial failure left the view holding the
activated profile's pin with no overlay at all: getState() then paired the new name with
whatever the shared store held, out of step with the handler the failure path had just
force-rebuilt.
The legs are not atomic with each other, so the failure path now decides after every leg
has settled - allSettled rather than all, matching upsertProviderProfile - and puts the
overlay in the state that agrees with the pin this view actually holds: the activated
settings when the pin write took the new name, which is the invariant
refreshViewLocalStateForUpdatedProfile enforces on the success path and the configuration
the rebuild handed the task, and otherwise the overlay captured before the switch.
Covered on both rejecting legs: the provider-settings leg, where both existing cases now
assert the reported name against the reported settings, and the pin leg, added as its own
case. Without the restore the three assertions fail (38/41); with it 41/41, and the
ClineProvider, sticky-profile, sticky-mode, parallelMode, webviewMessageHandler,
api-configuration, ContextProxy and registerCommands suites pass unchanged.

Draft PR — vps2 unit F3 (mode/profile writes).
Tracking: fork issue 41 (vps2 series ledger). Upstream issue: #1559 (this series' gap record; the original upstream bug is #978). Port source: the F1c-head-to-CS residual, cross-checked against upstream PR #979 (fix(webview): isolate parallel mode and provider profile writes) — closed/superseded by the vps2 series; the fork issue 41 ledger names #979 as the F3 port source.
What this unit does at head ca61d20

Series mechanics
Pre-merge ERROR-row pre-check (head 9c2bee3)
setViewStateIdnow rejects non-string ids (crafted postMessage), bounds the key length (MAX_VIEW_STATE_ID_LENGTH), and refuses ids already owned by another live instance; a refused view stays on its temporary id against shared state. Regression tests: non-string, oversized, claimed-by-another-view. Negative controls: disabling the ownership check reddens exactly the claim test; widening the length bound reddens exactly the oversized test; restores byte-exact (hash match)._saveViewLocalStateFromMutationpersists the non-secret subset before updating the buffer; the re-key is a single queued write (no delete-then-write window; authorship clears only after the write lands); the mutation hook keeps the buffer synced across setValue/setValues and profile upsert/activation/deletion.--max-warnings=0clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.upsertProviderProfilewithactivate=false, and the zoo-gateway callback's non-active path) rewrote the profile on disk but left pinned views serving the pre-save snapshot; the non-activating branch now refreshes pinned sibling views (and this view when it holds the pin), and the callback routes throughupsertProviderProfileso the refresh cannot be forgotten.getState()no longer spreads the pinned overlay over the shared provider settings (a key the profile never defined leaked in from the shared profile: model id, region, tuning). The overlay is a complete snapshot: used in place, with onlyapiProviderfalling back to shared state.--max-warnings=0clean, tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines, prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.Follow-up: overlay read from the view buffer (required-lane fix)
The previous round's overlay-completeness change read the overlay from the merged state values, which also carry the raw
apiConfigurationstate key. That key is a partial patch written by shared-store paths, not a view snapshot: with no overlay present and the raw key partial,getState()served only the partial object and dropped the shared provider settings the previous merge produced (the parallel-mode activation tests caught exactly this - the activated profile's model id vanished; required lane red on the units carrying that spec). The overlay is now read from the view buffer itself, where a present value is by contract a complete profile and an absent one means the shared store serves the settings.Proofs: ClineProvider.parallelMode.spec green where present (the six synchronization tests that regressed), ClineProvider.spec green including the overlay-completeness tests, sticky-mode and webviewMessageHandler green; negative control: reverting the overlay to a shallow merge over the shared settings still reddens exactly the leak test; restores byte-exact (hash match); eslint
--max-warnings=0clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.Follow-up: active task handlers rebuilt on non-activating saves (head a5a2f60)
A review round on the view-identity unit found that the non-activating-save refresh updated pinned views' buffers but not their active tasks' API handlers, and the posted state prefers the task's own
apiConfiguration: a conversation running in a view pinned to the saved profile kept sending the old token (e.g. after the Zoo Gateway callback rotated it) even though the view's buffer had caught up. The refresh now rebuilds the affected tasks' handlers in the pinned views, and the non-activating branch rebuilds this view's own handler when it holds the pin.Proofs: ClineProvider.spec green (the pinned-sibling refresh test now asserts the active task's handler is rebuilt with the saved settings, not just the private buffer); negative control: dropping the rebuild from the refresh reddens exactly that assertion, restores byte-exact (hash match); parallelMode/sticky-mode/webviewMessageHandler green; eslint
--max-warnings=0clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.Follow-up: test-quality round from the review (head b68744c)
The review round on the api-wiring unit named four test-quality issues; the ones present in this unit are fixed here: the
viewStatesdescribe block moved out of thealwaysDenyUnapprovedCommandsblock (test names carried the wrong subject), the prune test'stoBeDefined()survival checks replaced with exact-shapetoEqualassertions (they pass even if pruning strips fields), the stale-temporary-entry test's fixed 10 ms wait replaced with awaiting the load itself (the negative assertion could pass vacuously on a slow load), and the readiness-cancel test's fake timers restored in afinallyblock (a failed assertion left fake timers active and hung a later real-timer test).Proofs: global-settings 9/9 where present, ClineProvider.spec green, sticky-mode green where present, api-task-control green where present; negative controls: pruning that strips
updatedAtreddens exactly the prune test, aloadViewStatethat adopts the unowned temporary-id entry reddens exactly the stale-entry test, restores byte-exact (hash match); eslint--max-warnings=0clean (src and types); prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.Follow-up: review-round fixes from the series (head 390c0d4)
A review round on the mode-profile-writes unit found that the profile-deletion re-pin updated each sibling view's buffer but not its running task: the posted state prefers the task's own
apiConfiguration, so a conversation in a view pinned to the deleted profile kept sending the deleted profile's settings. The re-pin now rebuilds the sibling's API handler with the replacement's settings and re-points the task's sticky profile name, mirroring the activation path.Proofs: ClineProvider.spec and sticky-mode green; eslint
--max-warnings=0clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED. The rebuild's negative control (dropping it reddens exactly the sibling re-pin test, byte-exact restore) runs in the units that own that test.Proofs: ClineProvider.spec 293/293, sticky-mode 34/34 (new pin-write-failure rollback test), parallel-mode 34/34 (sibling re-pin test asserts the task handler rebuild and sticky-name re-point); negative controls: dropping the rollback call reddens exactly the rollback test, dropping the rebuild reddens exactly the re-pin test, restores byte-exact (hash match); eslint
--max-warnings=0clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up, head 08c6fcb)
handleModeSwitchUnlockedreconciles every write it owns (shared mode, durable view pin, task mode, task history) when a failure lands after the task-mode write - including the mode-linked profile activation - sosubmitUserMessagedelivers the submitted message on the pre-switch mode and profile instead of a half-applied switch; regression test included.taskApiConfigName); regression tests cover both sites.afterEachdisposes the per-test provider before resetting the instance registry; the webview state-payload test renamed to describe what it asserts.Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 2, head c820dd0)
taskApiConfigName === deleted profile(the view-buffer re-pin stays unconditional), so a pinned view whose task follows another sticky profile keeps its conversation's settings and persisted profile name.
