Resolve targets and stage text src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts, src/services/file-safety/__tests__/safeWriteText.spec.ts |
Adds target and lock-key resolution, staging options, and error types. Writes strings or bytes to staging files, preserves target modes, and validates caller-supplied staging files. Tests cover staging, modes, content, and resolution. |
Publish, preserve, and clean up src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts, src/services/file-safety/__tests__/safeWriteText.spec.ts |
Publishes staged files with copy-based backups, Windows DACL handling, and parent-directory fsync checks. Cleanup failures are reported through warnings. Tests cover commit outcomes, backup cleanup, and platform-specific behavior. |
Integrate JSON writes and symlink-aware locks src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts, src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.test.ts, src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.lockKey.spec.ts, src/eslint-suppressions.json |
Updates JSON writes to lock and operate on resolved targets, then delegates publication to safeWriteText. Tests cover lock release, merge behavior, symlinks, and publication outcomes. Decreases the no-explicit-any suppression count from 4 to 3. |

Merge Risk:
Moderate · previous review ed9b2
-
Resolve both file-safety risks before merging: a transient path-resolution failure can let concurrent alias and referent writes bypass serialization, and a process able to alter a destination directory during staging can redirect a write through a replacement symlink.
Security Architecture Review
-
Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to
2945aCanonical locking improves ordinary alias handling, and publication failures preserve useful recovery information. However, long symlink chains can still produce different locks during publication, and project configuration updates now follow links to files outside the project without explicit target authorization. The latter risk depends on link control, filesystem permissions, and a configuration-update action.
Retained concerns
- Medium · security · inferred: Project MCP updates now publish through an existing .roo/mcp.json symlink rather than replacing the link. A party controlling that link can redirect an otherwise project-scoped update to an accessible external configuration, potentially including global tool-approval settings. No referent authorization is enforced along the inspected write path. Exploitation requires a suitable readable JSON referent, permission to replace it, and an update action; intentional external-link support and the wider trust policy remain unresolved.
- Medium · reliability · inferred: When a referent is temporarily absent during backup publication, a symlink chain longer than eight links can yield an intermediate lock key. If the referent returns before post-lock resolution, the caller can read, merge, and publish under a different lock from referent writers. This permits lost updates or conflicting backup and rollback ownership over the same file. Strict resolution rejects a still-dangling link, but does not validate that a recovered target matches the acquired lock.
Security review details
-
Security Blast Radius
- inferred — The demonstrated exposure is filesystem configuration reachable by the extension host, rather than a new remote endpoint. A project-controlled link can select an external referent, but successful replacement requires accessible JSON and sufficient directory permissions. Linking project MCP configuration to global MCP settings could make a project-labelled update persist beyond that project.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
- inferred — The conditional attack path is control of a project configuration symlink, followed by a project configuration-update action, then canonical resolution and publication to an external referent. Base behavior already read through symlinks, but replaced the link on write; the changed write destination is the introduced condition. This is an ownership-boundary concern, not a verified arbitrary-content write or command-execution finding.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed — MCP webview operations supply server, source, and tool identifiers rather than arbitrary publication paths. The service selects project or global configuration internally and parses its content. MCP connection setup also honors global and server disable flags. These controls constrain invocation and execution, but are distinct from authorization to mutate an external symlink referent.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- inferred — Commit-aware recovery improves failure containment, but depends on exclusive ownership of the publication target. Divergent fallback lock keys weaken that prerequisite: a rollback can compete with another writer's publication even though both use the advertised advisory-lock workflow.
Hardening Proposals
- proposed — Define caller-specific referent ownership policy: project configuration writers could reject out-of-scope referents unless the user explicitly authorizes them, while the general publication API remains usable for intentionally external paths.
- proposed — Make lock fallback distinguish a terminal referent from a truncated or cyclic walk, and reject or safely retry unresolved identity rather than proceeding under an intermediate key. Validate convergence through publication absence, restoration, and concurrent merges.

Full details: Persistence Integrity
-
Explanation
No explicit persistence-integrity failure is introduced.
safeWriteJsonawaits directory setup, merge reads, streaming completion, safeWriteText, cleanup, and lock release.safeWriteTextfsyncs staged content, uses an atomicfs.renamecommit, copies and fsyncs backups before commit, and preserves the published target on post-commit directory-fsync failure withPostCommitDurabilityError. The changed tests cover failed commits, cleanup, rollback behavior, and post-commit durability.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
-
Explanation
No changed lifecycle path shows an untracked resource leak or duplicate work. In
safeWriteText, every successfulopenSyncis paired withcloseSyncinfinally(lines 475-489, 505-527, 594-613, and 651-655). DACL dumps, staging files, backups, and staging directories have success and failure cleanup paths. InsafeWriteJson, the advisory lock is released in the outerfinallyafter resolution, merge, streaming, publish, and error paths (lines 76-81, 86-188). The JSON stream helper is unchanged from the base revision, so its existing behavior is not introduced by this pull request.
Full details: Title check
-
Explanation
The title "feat(file-safety): canonical advisory lock key (U2,
#1375)" matches the main change: resolveLockKey now canonicalizes a write target's lock key through its symlink referent so aliases and referents share one lock. It is slightly dense with the U2 and epic-number labels, but it names the primary change and scans clearly in history.
Full details: Description check
-
Explanation
The description is substantive and covers the what, why, test procedure, and checklist, but it departs from the required template in several ways. It has no Closes line in the required form (it uses "Closes:
#2017" with extra text), and it adds non-template sections and content such as chain tracking, budget figures, and merge order. It also has long, multi-round history in the body. Several checklist items are checked without the template wording. Style issues include contractions and passive or non-STE phrasing (for example, "is canonicalised", "is not applicable", and "Why the diff looks bigger than the change"). The Description section covers the implementation, but the review-focus and durability notes are mixed in with multi-round CI history. The Test Procedure is concrete and reproducible. Overall, the template's required information is present, so the check passes, but the description should be trimmed and aligned with the template.
-
Full details: Security Boundaries
-
Explanation
The prior finding remains present in changed code.
safeWriteTextpublicly acceptsoptions.tempPath; it only checks same-directory placement, regular-file type, target identity, the.new_*.tmpbasename, andnlink === 1after opening. Those checks do not establish that the caller created or owns the file. In the temp-path branch, the implementation opens and fsyncs the existing file without writingcontent, then renames it over the target. A caller or directory-writable attacker can place sensitive bytes in.new_attack.tmpbeside the target and pass that path, causing those bytes to be published while the requested content is ignored. This is a changed path and matches the explicit security-boundary failure condition.Resolution
Remove public pathname-based staging, or replace it with a trusted file-handle/internal staging API. If pathname support remains, create staging files through an ownership-safe exclusive protocol and bind the opened handle to that creation; filename convention, regular-file checks, and
nlinkare insufficient.
Full details: Regression Evidence
-
Explanation
Focused regression coverage remains incomplete. The changed
resolveLockKeyimplementation canonicalizes the parent directory and rejoins the basename (safeWriteText.ts:284-287), andsafeWriteJsonpasses that key toacquireFileLock(safeWriteJson.ts:76-81). Current tests cover canonicalization, dangling links, cycles, alias/referent locking, and non-ENOENT errors, but repository-wide search found no test that resolves two unrelated paths and asserts different keys or lock arguments. The prior failure is therefore unresolved.Resolution
Add a lowest-layer test for two unrelated paths. Assert that
resolveLockKey(pathA)andresolveLockKey(pathB)differ, or callsafeWriteJsonfor both and assert thatacquireFileLockreceives distinct arguments. Retain the existing alias/referent equality coverage.

…ve (U1, issue 1375) Split unit U1 of PR 1833. Three changes, each with a test that fails without it: - a caller-supplied staging path is checked for location and file type before anything is written, so an arbitrary path or a symlink cannot be published onto the target; - a failed parent-directory fsync on POSIX is reported as PostCommitDurabilityError instead of being swallowed, so a successful return never claims durability the filesystem did not grant; - the staged file and this write's own staging directory are released before RollbackFailureError is thrown. Focused coverage for resolveLockKey added: canonical parent directory, a dangling-link chain, and termination at the bounded depth on a two-link cycle.

…ishTarget (U1, issue 1375) The resolver may fall back to the given path only when lstat also reports the path as absent. An EACCES or EIO failure says nothing about whether the path is a link, so falling back would publish through a link we were not allowed to inspect. Focused tests added for both branches.

compile failed at the unit head on three points:
- RollbackFailureError needs a string backupPath, but the throw now happens after cleanup, so the
`string | null` narrowing was lost. The failure is now held as { error, backupPath }.
- The async lstat stand-in is built on the Stats prototype so it satisfies fsSync.Stats.
- The realpath/readlink mocks are typed to the real signatures; the readlink mock answers once
because only the link path is read.

Adopts the lineage's evolved safeWriteText (the Zoo-Code-Org#1912 copy): the backup is now copied without ever moving the target, closing the crash-loss window between a backup rename and the commit rename (Persistence Integrity row), and a caller-staged tempPath must carry the .new_*.tmp staging convention and still be a single-named regular file when opened, so neither an arbitrary file beside the target nor a hard-link substitution between the check and the open can be published onto the target (Security Boundaries row). Specs are ported with the implementation; the confineTo coverage stays with Zoo-Code-Org#1912 (U3 scope).

Port of the Zoo-Code-Org#1912 spec fix: the target-itself test passed a name the convention check also rejects, so the class-only assertion could not tell which guard fired. Stage a .new_*.tmp alias with the target's inode and assert the identity-specific message (CodeRabbit thread 4300138183).
Port of the Zoo-Code-Org#1912 test strengthening: the rejection lands after the open, so pin both outcomes: the descriptor is closed and the borrowed alias is unlinked (CodeRabbit thread 4300157108).

Review comments at @src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts:
- Around line 284-287: Update canonicalDirKey to fall back to dirPath only when
fs.realpath fails with ENOENT, using errorCode to identify the error; propagate
all other errors so the writer does not acquire a lock for an unresolved alias
path.
- Around line 350-529: In the caller-supplied staging branch of safeWriteText,
bind the opened file to the earlier lstat result so a path swap cannot make the
write follow or publish a symlink. Use a platform-appropriate no-follow open and
compare descriptor identity with stagingStat before applying permissions or
syncing; if that cannot secure the eventual rename on a platform, copy into
private staging and rename only the private file.

Conflict hunks resolved in favour of this branch's feature implementation; upstream's non-conflicting changes are merged in.
This PR makes the advisory file lock work the way callers already assume it does: the lock key is canonicalised through the symlink referent, so a symlink alias and the file it points to share one lock.
Today two writers that reach the same file through different paths - one through a symlink, one through the real path - take different locks and can overwrite each other. Every writer in the file-write-safety chain picks its lock through this key, so this fix has to land before the guarded writes do.
It is the second of nine PRs for epic #1375 (chain tracked on #1991).

Description
What this PR changes:
Why the diff looks bigger than the change: the chain is non-cumulative - this branch is based on
mainand carries its own copy of the earlier unit's content, which the GitHub diff shows as context.Review focus: the lock-key resolution and its spec (the files exercised by step 1 of the Test Procedure).
Test Procedure
From the repository root, with dependencies installed:
pnpm --dir src test -- core/task-persistence/__tests__/TaskHistoryStore.lockKey.spec.ts utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.lockKey.spec.tsExpected: 27 passed, 1 skipped (the skipped case is the win32 symlink variant, verified manually). Then
pnpm --dir src exec eslint --max-warnings=0on the touched files - clean.Environment: Windows 11, Node 20, unit layer only.

Post-commit durability port (8c8db37)
Port of the U3 durability fix to this unit's copies (identical catch shape):
safeWriteJsonmarks the staged path consumed onPostCommitDurabilityError, andsafeWriteText's failure cleanup removes the staged temp only when the commit never landed (using the committed flag it already tracks). Regression test + two negative controls (each guard off reddens exactly the new test). 80/81 (1 pre-existing skip).CI/review round final head (6d0bc87)
Refreshed onto main
4f1dee18e(merge596f2d398, no conflicts; lint-gate commit drops imports main's side orphaned; format-gate commit reformats two specs for the prettier version main now pins - main also added the.prettierignorethat previously shielded them). Review follow-ups ported from U3 at6d0bc8742: real directory descriptor +causeassertion in the durability test, exact staging-release path assertions. All six required checks green at6d0bc8742.Review round final head (5f93883)
After the durability-probe portability work (
d5a68d13f: the failure is injected by watching the commit rename - the parent-directory fsync is the only fsync after it - so no descriptor is fabricated and the Windows lane passes), CodeRabbit's two new threads are fixed at5f938837b: resolveLockKey now falls back to the link walk only on ENOENT (a transient EACCES/EIO can no longer key a writer to the alias while another keys the referent; regression test with negative control), and the cleanup-safety test restores its spies in a finally block. All six required checks green.
