Summary

Port simurg79/Roo-Code#15, authored by Bertan Ari in upstream commit d9d96e47006786acbb05d6ef0ee7a927f91f8f12.

  • Report failed diff blocks together instead of overwriting every error except the last. Bound output to five detailed failures (4000 characters each), then one-line summaries (200 characters each), with at most 50 reported failures and a remainder count.
  • Diagnose likely mistyped start-line markers only after matching fails; marker-like file content remains valid.
  • Explain partial success as Applied X of Y diff blocks (parser-provided blockCount) and ask for only failed blocks to be resent.
  • Security: failure diagnostics no longer contain file or search text. The strategy no longer emits Search Content, Best Match Found or Original Content sections; it reports similarity, threshold, Levenshtein distance, lengths, best-match line location and constant tips. ApplyDiffTool never forwards DiffResult.details, on single, multi-block, partial-success and fallback paths, so neither the model result nor the diff_error UI message can contain them.

Test Procedure

  • pnpm --dir src exec vitest run core/diff core/tools: 34 files, 781 passed, 5 skipped.
  • New regression tests run the real strategy with synthetic markers in file, search and details fields and assert they are absent from the tool result, diff_error message and recorded tool error for single, multiple, partial-success and fallback cases.
  • Pre-push hook: full turbo lint and turbo check-types passed; Prettier applied. No ESLint suppression changes.
  • Environment: Node 24.15.0 (repo requests 22.23.1); Vitest from the repository toolchain via pnpm exec. CI remains authoritative.

Known upstream limitations

The SEARCH-marker regex count is advisory. Diff block N of M labels enumerate failed entries, not original request positions.

Pre-Submission Checklist

  • Issue Linked: blocked on maintainer-assigned issue (see above).
  • Scope: focused on apply_diff failure reporting.
  • Self-Review: done.
  • Testing: regression tests added.
  • Documentation Impact: none required.

No changesets or changelog entries. Implementation, testing and review were AI-assisted.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Diff failures now include a targeted hint when a malformed start-line marker may have been treated as search text, while valid markers and ordinary failed searches avoid the hint.
    • Failure reports combine multiple unsuccessful changes and show best-match locations without exposing file or search text. Long error messages and failure lists are shortened, with notices when details are omitted.
    • Partial-application reports now provide more accurate applied and failed block counts, clarify which changes were not applied, and guide retries to include only still-needed failed blocks.

The diff strategy now reports best-match locations and lengths without including file or search text. It adds hints for likely malformed start-line markers. ApplyDiffTool combines and limits failure output and reports estimated applied blocks with retry guidance.

Changes: Diff failure diagnostics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Diff strategy diagnostics
src/core/diff/strategies/multi-search-replace.ts, src/core/diff/strategies/__tests__/multi-search-replace*.spec.ts, apps/vscode-e2e/src/fixtures/apply-diff.ts
No-match errors report best-match locations and lengths without including file or search text. The strategy adds hints for likely malformed start-line markers after matching fails. Tests cover marker forms, matching behavior, diagnostic content, and content omission.
ApplyDiffTool failure reporting
src/shared/tools.ts, src/core/tools/ApplyDiffTool.ts, src/core/tools/__tests__/applyDiffTool.failureReporting.spec.ts
ApplyDiffTool combines failed parts and limits detailed and abbreviated output. It omits detail fields and reports estimated applied and failed block counts with retry guidance. Successful DiffResult values can include an optional blockCount. Tests cover failure output, truncation, content omission, and partial application.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to e75fd

The failure diagnostics no longer expose the malformed marker, but the length-guard test needs a stronger input to protect against a performance regression. This is a bounded fix before merge.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

No changed path meets the failure condition. multi-search-replace.ts now reports only numeric match metadata and constant guidance after a failed match; it no longer includes search or file content. ApplyDiffTool.ts no longer renders DiffResult.details, and its bounded failure formatter forwards only strategy error text. The existing validateAccess(relPath) check remains before file access, and both save paths still require askApproval.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

No changed persistence path introduces the stated failure conditions. The pull request changes diff parsing, failure formatting, and partial-apply reporting. The existing file writes remain awaited through saveDirectly and saveChanges; the new blockCount is an optional diagnostic value, and partial results now include explicit retry guidance.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

No changed lifecycle path can be identified. The production changes only format diff diagnostics, add blockCount, and compute partial-apply counts. MultiSearchReplaceDiffStrategy adds no listener, watcher, provider, timer, task, or cancellation work. ApplyDiffTool keeps its existing approval, reset, and queued-message paths; the new formatFailedParts and truncate helpers are synchronous formatting only. Tests and fixture changes do not create runtime resources.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description clearly explains the implementation, security impact, testing, and known limitations. However, it does not follow the required template fully and explicitly lacks an approved linked issue.

Resolution

Add the required ### Description section and complete all required checklist sections. Link an approved, assigned GitHub issue with a Closes: #<number> line before merging.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The pull request changes durable diff_error chat content without adding a required Playwright component snapshot. ApplyDiffTool now sends multi-failure, abbreviated, and truncated diagnostics through task.say("diff_error", formattedError) at src/core/tools/ApplyDiffTool.ts:112; ChatRow renders that persisted message with expandable ErrorRow at webview-ui/src/components/chat/ChatRow.tsx:1039-1047. The changed-file inventory contains no webview-ui visual test or snapshot. The added Vitest tests assert strings and mocked calls, but do not verify rendered layout.

Resolution

Add a Playwright component visual test for the diff_error chat state with representative multi-block, abbreviated, and truncated diagnostics. Commit the generated snapshots and verify that the persisted message renders without clipping or layout regressions.

Count only parser-recognized SEARCH blocks.

An escaped literal \<<<<<<< SEARCH can occur in SEARCH content. The parser keeps it inside the block and later removes the escape. If another block fails, this branch can report Applied 2 of 3 even though only one of two parsed blocks applied. Count only unescaped, line-level SEARCH markers.

Suggested fix
-			const searchBlocks = (diffContent.match(/<<<<<<< SEARCH/g) || []).length
+			const searchBlocks = (diffContent.match(/(?:^|\n)(?<!\\)<<<<<<< SEARCH>?[ \t]*(?=\r?\n|$)/g) || []).length

Only the first failed block keeps Search/Best Match/Original Content sections (main parity); later blocks and the partial-apply result keep diagnostics only.
Stop echoing search, best-match and original file content from failed SEARCH blocks and never forward DiffResult details. Failures now carry numeric scores, line locations and constant hints for single, multi-block, partial-success and fallback paths.
…fixture

The marker hint no longer interpolates the first search line. The e2e mock fixture matched on search text that the failure output no longer contains, so the error smoke test timed out.

Rebased onto main b69989b82 (new head 20dcb7c69).

  • CodeRabbit outside-diff finding (multi-search-replace.ts:557, malformed-marker hint echoing the first search line): fixed. The hint now describes the marker shape without interpolating search text. The regression test asserts the marker variant is absent from the error.
  • e2e-mock failure (Should handle apply_diff errors gracefully, 60s timeout): the mock fixture matched on the literal search text, which failure output intentionally no longer echoes, so no fixture matched. The fixture now matches the non-sensitive Best Match Location diagnostic.

Local validation was not possible because main's updated dependencies are unavailable from this machine's package mirror. Relying on CI for tests, types, lint and format.

@simurg79 I inspected head 20dcb7c69 and confirmed:

  • The malformed-marker hint no longer interpolates search text.
  • The regression test checks that malformed marker variants are absent from the error.
  • The e2e mock fixture now matches Best Match Location instead of search text.

I’ll trigger the requested review. I did not run tests, type checks, lint, or format checks. CI validation remains pending.

The two adjacent \s* groups around the optional colon look like they backtrack quadratically. A first line of startline plus 40k spaces took about 450 ms here. Would it make sense to collapse the whitespace quantifiers, or length-guard firstSearchLine before the test?

Agreed. Fixed in 4da8b64: firstSearchLine is now length-guarded (MAX_MARKER_HINT_LINE_LENGTH = 64) before the regex runs. Real malformed markers are far shorter, so hint behavior is unchanged. Regression tests: a startline + 40k-space line skips the hint and finishes quickly, and a padded marker within the guard still gets the hint.

if (diffResult.failParts && diffResult.failParts.length > 0) {
partFailHint = `But unable to apply all diff parts to file: ${absolutePath}. Use the read_file tool to check the newest file version and re-apply diffs.\n`

Is there a test for the case where every block fails, or failures outnumber searchBlocks? All the 'Applied X of N' cases I could find have X > 0, so this Math.max(0, ...) clamp looks unexercised.

Good catch, it was unexercised. Added in 4da8b64: an it.each covering "every block fails" (2 of 2) and "failures outnumber parsed blocks" (3 vs 2). Both assert Applied 0 of 2, the correct "did NOT apply" count, and no negative count.

When blocks 3 and 7 of 8 fail, this prints 'Diff block 1 of 2' and '2 of 2', while the partial-success header says 'Applied 6 of 8'. Could the model read these as block positions? Would 'Failure N of M' be clearer?

Yes, that's ambiguous. Changed in 4da8b64 to --- Failure N of M ---, and updated the assertions, including one that Diff block no longer appears. Failures don't track their source block index, so labeling them by original position would need new plumbing; the ordinal label avoids implying a position instead.

@edelauna thanks for the review. All three points are addressed in 4da8b64 + e75fd92 (replies inline):

  • Marker-hint regex is now length-guarded before testing (regression test with 40k-space input).
  • Applied 0 of N clamp now covered for all-fail and failures > parsed blocks.
  • Failure labels now read Failure N of M instead of Diff block N of M.

All CI checks pass on e75fd92. Could you take another look when you have a moment?

Make the overlong input exercise the length guard.

The current input trims to startline, which the hint regex rejects because it has no number. Append 3 after the whitespace so the trimmed marker matches the regex and the test fails if the length guard is removed.
