Fixes #2109

Problem

The mode -> provider profile map is stored in shared extension storage, so every VS Code window reads and writes the same one. Selecting a profile in window 2 overwrote the entry window 1 relied on, and a subtask started from window 1 in a different mode (also mode switches and history restore) picked up window 2's model config.

Fix

ClineProvider keeps an in-memory map of the profiles chosen in its own window and checks it before the shared map. All mode-profile lookups and writes go through two helpers (getModeConfigId / setModeConfig); the shared write is unchanged.

Limitations

  • The per-window map is not persisted across window reloads.
  • Modes this window has not touched still fall back to the shared value.

Tests

Added a regression test in ClineProvider.spec.ts. ClineProvider suites and check-types pass.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

The mode -> provider profile map lives in shared extension storage, so a
profile selected in one VS Code window leaked into subtasks and mode
switches in other windows. Prefer this window's own choices and fall back
to the shared map.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Mode-specific provider profile selections now remain correctly scoped to the current window.
    • Window-specific selections take precedence over conflicting shared settings.
    • Modes without a local selection continue using shared settings.
    • Improved fallback behavior when saved profiles are missing, unconfigured, or outdated.

ClineProvider now keeps mode-to-profile selections in a per-window cache. It checks the cache before shared persisted settings and uses provider-level helpers for mode profile reads and writes across restoration, switching, activation, and delegation.

Changes: Window-local mode profiles

Layer / File(s) Summary
Window-local profile lookup and persistence
src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts
ClineProvider checks its per-window cache before persisted settings and updates both when saving a mode profile. A regression test checks that a local selection takes precedence and that an unselected mode uses the shared profile.
Mode profile flow integration
src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/__tests__/ClineProvider.delegation.spec.ts
History restoration, mode switching, profile activation, and delegation use the provider-level mode profile helpers. Delegation tests provide the lookup and cover fallback cases.

Profile choices made in a window now persist within that window. However, a subtask started in a mode the window has not used yet can still pick up a profile chosen in another window, which is the leak this change is meant to fix. Resetting settings can also leave stale per-window profile choices until reload. Address the untouched-mode fallback, or explicitly accept it, before merging.

Explanation

The description explains the problem, implementation, limitations, linked issue, and test coverage. It omits the template checklist and some optional sections, but the required change context is mostly complete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #2109 requires independent provider selections per VS Code window and correct configuration for ongoing tasks and automatic subtasks. The PR adds ClineProvider.localModeConfigIds, checks it before shared storage in getModeConfigId, and records selections in setModeConfig. The changed history, mode-switch, persistence, activation, and delegation paths use these helpers. ClineProvider.spec.ts verifies that a window-local selection overrides a conflicting shared value and that untouched modes still use the shared value. The delegation tests also cover shared lookup and task-local fallback behavior.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed implementation in ClineProvider.ts directly addresses issue #2109. The changes in ClineProvider.spec.ts and ClineProvider.delegation.spec.ts provide regression and delegation coverage for the same mode-profile lookup behavior. No unrelated product behavior or unrelated files appear in the supplied change summary.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

Focused coverage exists for the changed behavior. ClineProvider.spec.ts:2450-2463 verifies that setModeConfig records a window-local choice, that local lookup overrides shared storage, and that an untouched mode falls back to shared storage. Existing mode-switch tests cover saved and unset profiles, and delegation tests cover missing, unconfigured, and stale profiles. The change adds no durable visible UI, so no Playwright snapshot is required.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

PASS. The changed path only adds an in-memory mode-to-profile ID map and routes existing profile lookups and writes through getModeConfigId and setModeConfig in src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:1839-1845. Profile activation still resolves the ID through ProviderSettingsManager.getProfile, which rejects unknown IDs. The change does not expose secrets or PII, execute input, or bypass an approval or allowlist control. The test-only changes add no runtime path.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

No changed lifecycle path introduces a resource leak or duplicate work. The production diff adds only a provider-owned Map and routes mode-profile reads and writes through two helpers. setModeConfig performs one in-memory update and one existing settings write; it does not register listeners, watchers, timers, tasks, or providers. The existing dispose() path still removes provider resources and the provider instance, while the new Map is owned by that provider and requires no separate disposal. The test-only changes add no runtime lifecycle behavior.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

The changed persistence path has a partial-failure defect. ClineProvider.setModeConfig writes localModeConfigIds at ClineProvider.ts:1843-1845 before awaiting providerSettingsManager.setModeConfig. If the shared secret write fails, the caller rejects, but the local map keeps the failed ID. Later history restoration, mode switching, or delegation reads that ID and masks the last successfully persisted choice. The window can therefore use a failed selection until reload, and the failed state is lost on reload.

Resolution

Update the local map only after the awaited shared write succeeds, or save the previous local value and restore it in a catch before rethrowing. Add a regression test where setModeConfig rejects and verify that getModeConfigId still returns the previous local or shared value.

Exercise the local choice in the delegation test.

This fixture forwards getModeConfigId directly to shared storage. The other changed fixture also returns a mocked saved ID, so neither test checks whether delegation uses this provider's local selection when another window has changed the shared ID. Add a case with distinct local and shared IDs and assert the child's selected profile. As per path instructions, “Require regression coverage at the lowest valid harness with behavior-focused assertions.”

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Clear cached mode IDs during reset.

resetState() resets stored profiles but leaves localModeConfigIds intact. After a reset, this lookup can return an ID for a removed profile; handleModeSwitchUnlocked then finds no matching profile and keeps the current configuration instead of using the reset mapping. Clear the cache as part of resetState(). As per path instructions, “Check listeners, resources, and providers are disposed without stale state or duplicate work.”

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Snapshot mode choices before another window changes them.

If this window has not written a mode selection, every lookup reads the current shared value. For example, window A can start a task with its existing configuration, window B can select a different profile for the child's mode, and window A's delegation at Line 3991 will load B's profile. The documented untouched-mode fallback therefore still permits the cross-window subtask leak described by the linked issue. Capture each window's initial mode mapping before later shared writes can change its choices, and test delegation after a second window changes the target mode. As per path instructions, “Trace changed inputs through normal, boundary, error, cancellation, retry, and default paths and their direct test counterparts.”
