Refs #2082 (partial; does not close it)

Stacked on #2115 (it reuses utils/shellDialect.ts). Until that merges, this PR also shows its commit; the DCG changes are the last commit only.

Problem

dcg parses every command as POSIX, while execute_command runs cmd.exe on Windows. A block therefore can mean "unreadable as POSIX" rather than "destructive", and nothing in the message says which. Separately, DCG's windows.* packs are off by default, so cmd-only destructive forms are not matched.

Change

  • formatDcgBlockedMessage(reason, ruleId, shellPath?) appends a localized note (all 18 locales) when the executing shell is cmd.exe or PowerShell: DCG analyzes POSIX syntax, but the command runs in <shell>, so a block may mean DCG could not read it. The call site passes getShell().
  • On Windows, runDcg passes --with-packs windows.filesystem,windows.misc (new getDcgArgs), per the finding in the issue that this makes rd /s /q and format detectable on v0.7.7.

Not covered (needs follow-up)

  • Parsing in the real dialect: dcg test --dialect cmd|unknown only exists in newer releases, and the pinned DCG_VERSION is v0.7.7. Bumping it requires updating the archive SHA-256 values, which I did not verify here.
  • del /q stays allowed even with the packs on v0.7.7 (per the issue comment).
  • The --with-packs change is based on a Linux-build v0.7.7 test reported in the issue; I did not run the Windows binary.

Tests

getDcgArgs per platform, message note for cmd/PowerShell vs POSIX/undefined shells; getShell is pinned in the tool spec so the suite does not depend on the host. core/tools, services/destructive-command-guard, utils, i18n, core/prompts (1,835 tests) and check-types pass.

The system prompt only named the shell path, so rules and habits written for
bash silently ran with cmd semantics on Windows. Add a Shell Syntax line for
cmd.exe and PowerShell (when execute_command is available) covering command
chaining, variables and exit codes.

DCG parses every command as POSIX, so on cmd.exe/PowerShell a block can mean
the command was unreadable rather than destructive. Append a note saying so,
and enable DCG's windows.filesystem/windows.misc packs on Windows so cmd-only
destructive forms (rd /s, format) are matched.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added shell syntax guidance for Windows Command Prompt and PowerShell when command execution is available.
    • Destructive Command Guard messages now identify the active shell and explain when POSIX parsing may affect blocking decisions.
    • Windows command protection now includes platform-specific safeguards.
  • Localization

    • Added and updated translated guidance for destructive-command blocks across supported languages, including reason, rule, and shell interpretation details.

The changes detect supported Windows shell dialects, add shell syntax guidance to prompts and destructive-command denial messages, and include Windows-specific packs in DCG arguments.

Changes: Shell-aware command guard

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shell detection and prompt context
src/utils/shellDialect.ts, src/utils/__tests__/shellDialect.spec.ts, src/core/prompts/sections/system-info.ts, src/core/prompts/sections/__tests__/system-info.spec.ts
New helpers identify cmd.exe and PowerShell variants. The system prompt adds a Shell Syntax line for recognized dialects when execute_command is available.
DCG denial messages with shell context
src/core/tools/ExecuteCommandTool.ts, src/core/tools/__tests__/executeCommandTool.spec.ts, src/i18n/locales/*/tools.json
Destructive-command denial messages append localized shell guidance when the active shell has a recognized dialect. Locale strings and tests cover this behavior.
Windows-specific DCG arguments
src/services/destructive-command-guard/runner.ts, src/services/destructive-command-guard/__tests__/runner.spec.ts
getDcgArgs adds Windows filesystem and miscellaneous packs on Windows. runDcg uses the helper, and tests cover Windows, Linux, and macOS.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the problem, implementation, limitations, issue reference, and test coverage. It is sufficiently complete for review, although the template checklist and contact section are not included.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

No changed path introduces a security-boundary failure. src/services/destructive-command-guard/runner.ts adds Windows packs but still passes the command as one argument to spawn(..., { shell: false }). src/core/tools/ExecuteCommandTool.ts still canonicalizes the command, runs DCG before approval, and preserves the existing approval flow. The shell-dialect changes only add prompt and denial-message text; they do not execute shell input or alter allowlists. The known DCG v0.7.7 coverage limits are pre-existing external behavior, not a changed approval bypass.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

No changed persistence path exists. The PR changes DCG argument construction, shell-dialect prompt/message formatting, localization data, and tests. runner.ts only builds arguments and invokes spawn; it does not read or write persisted state. The changed code contains no persistence write, non-atomic update, rollback path, or persisted default that requires propagation.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

No changed lifecycle path can be identified. The PR adds synchronous shell-dialect formatting and changes only the argument construction for the existing runDcg child process. Its existing timer, stream listeners, settlement guard, and cleanup calls remain unchanged. No listener, watcher, provider, timer, task, or cancellation/disposal/restart path was added or duplicated.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The new DCG note has unit coverage, and getDcgArgs plus shell-dialect branches have focused tests. However, the changed deny path at ExecuteCommandTool.ts:202 is not covered for a Windows shell: executeCommandTool.spec.ts:76 pins getShell() to /bin/bash, and the denial test only expects the base translation key. A mutation that removes getShell() from the call would pass. The formatter test also supplies a shell only with reason and ruleId unset, while the real denial path uses the reason-and-rule branch. A mutation that omits the note for that branch would also pass.

Resolution

Add a focused denial-path test with getShell() returning cmd.exe or PowerShell and DCG returning a deny result with reason and ruleId. Assert that task.say contains the localized POSIX-assumption note and the executing shell. Also parameterize the formatter test across the four reason/rule combinations with a recognized Windows shell, while retaining the unknown and unset-shell cases.

Assert the interpolated shell name.

src/core/tools/__tests__/executeCommandTool.spec.ts:328-330 checks only the translation key. Tests run with an empty translation resource, so this assertion can pass if { shell: ... } is removed from the t call. Use a translation fixture or mock that performs interpolation, then assert cmd.exe and pwsh.exe in the Windows messages while preserving the existing absence checks.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Correct the PowerShell error-status guidance.

When a PowerShell cmdlet fails, $LASTEXITCODE does not change. The prompt currently presents it as the indicator for exit codes alongside cmdlets. An agent can therefore treat a failed cmdlet as successful after an earlier native command returned zero. State that $? reports the last command’s success, and reserve $LASTEXITCODE for native programs and applicable scripts. (learn.microsoft.com)
