[Perf] Throttle partial message updates while streaming - #2120
PierrunoYT wants to merge 1 commit into
Conversation
Every streamed delta of a partial say/ask posted the whole message to the webview, so long markdown responses reflowed dozens of times per second. Post partial updates at most every 120ms with a trailing post for the latest text, and cancel the queued post when the message is finalized or the task is disposed. Capture message values when each post occurs.
Task.say mutates the same ClineMessage object for later deltas and finalization. The mock stores that object by reference, so the current assertions can pass even when an earlier post had different values. Capture ts, text, and partial in the mock implementation at invocation time, then assert against those snapshots.

Add required coverage for ask finalization and disposal.
The test-file instruction requires regression coverage for relevant boundary and cleanup cases. The current suite covers queued-update cancellation only through say() finalization. Add fake-timer tests for a queued partial ask() update followed by finalization and for a queued partial update followed by task.dispose(). Advance the timers and assert that no late partial update is posted.

Fixes #2062
Problem
Each streamed delta of a partial
say/ask(text, reasoning,attempt_completion'sresult, ...) posted the entire message to the webview (messageUpdated). Providers that stream small chunks therefore caused dozens of full re-renders per second (331 deltas in 10.5 s in the report), and partial markdown (half a table, an open code fence) changed the layout on almost every update.Change
Tasknow routes partial updates throughpostPartialMessageUpdate: the in-memory message is still updated on every delta, but the webview post happens at most once per 120 ms (leading edge, plus one trailing post so the latest text always arrives). The queued post is cancelled when the message is finalized (partial: false) and when the task is disposed; finalization still posts and persists as before.Notes
RooCodeEventName.Message"updated" event shares this path, so API/CLI consumers also see fewer partial updates; the final version is always emitted.Tests
New
partial message update throttlingtests (fake timers): a 50-delta burst coalesces into fewer than 10 posts and ends with the latest text; finalizing cancels the queued post and delivers the final text; updates far apart post immediately.srcsuite (11,031 tests) andcheck-typespass.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
