feat(webview): per-view view-state identity and host-minted claim token (N1, split 1/3 of #1546) - #2226
Split unit N1 of #1546 (F1a — per-view view-state identity)
Part of the split plan recorded in fork issue 41. #1546 mixed four things: per-view identity, the durable viewStates pipeline, buffer and mutation behaviour, and F0 button targeting. This unit carries per-view identity only.
Environment: Node 22.23.4 and pnpm 10.8.1 (the engines versions), any OS. Steps 1, 2 and 5 run from src/; step 3 is the manual two-view check.
View-local identity (automated). pnpm exec vitest run core/config/__tests__/ContextProxy.spec.ts core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts extension/__tests__/api-configuration.spec.ts.
The mocked scenario is two ClineProvider instances over one shared ContextProxy: view A runs
its activation write group, and view B activates its own profile between that group and A's
rollback. Expected: A keeps its own selection and mode, B keeps its own, the shared currentApiConfigName follows the newer write, and only the store whose undo failed is named in
the thrown error (activation rollback also failed: <store>: ...). In the single-view case
nothing is skipped for ownership, and the durable selection never names a profile the view
buffer does not follow.
External API read (automated). pnpm exec vitest run extension/__tests__/api-configuration.spec.ts -t "omits host-owned viewStates".
The scenario seeds viewStates with a claimToken and calls getConfiguration(). Expected: currentApiConfigName and the other portable, non-secret keys come back; no viewStates key is
present, and the claim token appears nowhere in the returned value.
Two views of one workspace (by hand). Open a workspace and choose provider profile A in the
sidebar chat (zoo-code.SidebarProvider). Open a second view of the same workspace - the popout
button (zoo-code.popoutButtonClicked) or an editor-tab chat (zoo-code.openInNewTab) - choose
profile B there and send one message. Expected: after Developer: Reload Webviews, or after
closing and reopening it, the second view still shows profile B and the first view still shows
profile A; the shared selection follows the newest activation, so a third view opened afterwards,
having no state of its own, starts on profile B.
Bounded growth (automated, with the manual shape). Write state from more than 50 distinct
views. Expected: the durable viewStates map holds at most MAX_PERSISTED_VIEW_STATES (50)
entries and the dropped ones are those with the oldest updatedAt - no entry is exempt.
The automated form is the 50-entry pruning case in core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts.

and CI's mutation-diff, which measures extension at 500 changed executable lines against the
500 cap and types at 8.
Scope (contract point)
viewId (renderContext plus a per-instance counter) and viewStateId identity. setViewStateId refuses __proto__, non-string and oversized ids, and refuses a key another live view already claimed.
Host-minted claimToken binding: the viewStateClaim and viewStateId message payloads, rebindUnboundViewStateEntry, postViewStateClaimToWebview, and the persisted viewStateSchema and viewStates fields.
A claim-less legacy entry is adopted only through the re-bind path. A live or mismatched claim is refused.

Measured on 71277fa19: core/webview plus core/config pass (1,273 tests), packages/types passes (643), and the activation, extension, API and diagnostics suites pass (307). tsc --noEmit exits 0. eslint exits 0. prettier --check . is clean over the repository. src/eslint-suppressions.json is unchanged, and no .changeset file is added.
Negative controls. Each one reverts half of a fix, is measured, and is then restored byte-identically.
CTRL-2226A to CTRL-2226C: the identity guards from the first review round. Dropping one reddens its own claim test.
CTRL-2226D: both isViewLaunched resets removed. The two claim tests fail at expected true to be false right after the renderer is replaced.
CTRL-2226E: the ContextProxy.setValues key filter removed. The test fails at expected { claimToken: ‘stolen’, … } to match object { claimToken: ‘host-token’, … }.
CTRL-2226F: the rollback block removed. The test fails at expected { persisted: true, claim: ‘dropped’ } to deeply equal { persisted: false, claim: ‘none’ }.
CTRL-2226G: the dispose detach removed. The test fails at expected [ { … } ] to not include { … }.
CTRL-2226H: the queue step’s finally removed, so a write detaches its provider only when the write resolves. The rejection test fails at expected [ { …(3) } ] to have a length of +0 but got 1, and the resolve-path test stays green.
CTRL-2226I: the getState() overlay removed. The restoration test fails at expected ‘code’ to be ‘architect’, and the no-buffer test stays green.
Stack / merge order
F0 (#1528) → N1 (this PR) → N2 → N3 → F1b (#1550) → F1c (#1552) → F3 (#1560) → F4/F5/F6/F7. Base is main; merge strictly in order. Refs: #1546.
What the review rounds asked for
Review 5778046531, thread PRRT_kwDOSK-bwM6z3nuP: reset isViewLaunched when the renderer is replaced.
Done in clearWebviewResources(), which covers view replacement and disposal, and in reloadWebviewForRecovery() before the new HTML is assigned. Control CTRL-2226D.
Review 5778380363 (pre-merge panel): the non-portable-key boundary now runs inside ContextProxy. setValues, which every configuration path goes through. A write whose claim can never reach a renderer is undone.
The queue holds provider-independent entries and detaches them. Controls CTRL-2226E, CTRL-2226F and CTRL-2226G.
Review 5778596876, thread PRRT_kwDOSK-bwM6z4o6I: a queued write now releases its provider whether the write resolves or rejects. The queue step owns the generation guard and detaches the entry in a finally. Control CTRL-2226H.
Persistence Integrity row of that review: the restored view fields reach both consumers through one overlay inside getState(), and getStateToPostToWebview() reads through the same overlay.
The precedence rule is written in the code comment: the view’s own buffered or restored mode, currentApiConfigName and profile-derived apiConfiguration come first, task-level values still come above the overlay, and a field the view does not hold falls back to the shared setting.
Control CTRL-2226I.
Regression Evidence row of that review: the prune cap is tested at the boundary.
The test seeds 50 entries with distinct timestamps, saves a 51st, and asserts that exactly 50 remain, that seed-0 is the entry evicted, and that the save which triggered the eviction survives.
upstream/main (e943530c8, the time and date format settings) is merged into this head. Four files conflicted. Each was resolved so that main’s settings stay and this unit’s behaviour is re-applied beside them.
Pre-Submission Checklist
Issue Linked: the approval record for this unit is row 3 of the fork ledger named above. No upstream issue exists for this unit and no number was invented.
Scope: all 16 files serve the per-view view-state identity contract. The durable write pipeline, buffer and mutation behaviour, F0 and F3 content are listed above as out of this unit.
Self-Review: I re-read every changed hunk. I re-read the full review threads and panel rows before answering them.
Writing Style: short sentences, plain words, active voice, one idea per sentence, no contractions.
Testing: 35 new it and it.each declarations across 9 new describes in this unit’s diff, plus one removal control per fix (CTRL-1557* lineage, CTRL-2226A to CTRL-2226I).
Test Helpers: new coverage reuses the existing ClineProvider fixtures in ClineProvider.spec.ts. Each interleaving, gate and assertion stays inline. No shared helper was added for a single test.
Visual Snapshot: not applicable. The change is host-side identity and persistence. No static rendered state changes, and the effect a user would see (which selection a panel restores) is asserted in the host specs.
Documentation Impact: checked; no user-facing documentation change is needed (see "Documentation Updates").
Contribution Guidelines: I read and agree to the Contributor Guidelines, including the Simplified Technical English requirement.
Documentation Updates
No documentation updates are required. The claim token, viewStateId and viewStates are internal host and webview protocol state. No user-facing setting, command or UI surface changes name.
Get in Touch
No Discord username is on record for this author, so none is invented here. Questions reach me on this PR thread or on row 3 of the fork ledger.
Additional Notes
The panel rows are guarantees this unit introduced, so they are closed at the mechanism rather than at the reported call site. The body no longer carries the re-derivation accounting or the per-lane tallies; those live in the author’s sweep log.
The mutation gate’s 400-mutant advisory is a warning with conclusion success, and the changed-line count is inside the 500-line limit for both packages, so no narrow exclusion is being asked for.

Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Each webview saves and restores its own mode and selected provider profile, so separate views can retain different selections.
Reopened views can restore saved selections without overwriting selections made in other views.
Bug Fixes
Deleting a provider configuration that doesn’t exist now returns a specific not-found error.
Invalid or conflicting view registrations no longer restore another view’s saved selections.
Settings
Per-view selections are excluded from settings imports and exports. Imports containing them display a warning, and attempts to update them are ignored.
Per-view selections are omitted from configuration returned to external callers.
The provider adds claim-bound per-view state for mode and selected-profile values. The changes add settings and message contracts, view-ID registration and restoration, settings-boundary exclusions, boolean message-delivery results, and a typed error for deleting a missing provider configuration.

Layer / File(s)
Summary
View-state schema and message contract packages/types/src/global-settings.ts, packages/types/src/vscode-extension-host.ts, packages/types/src/__tests__/*
The settings schema adds per-view records, and extension messages add view-state ID and claim fields. Tests cover valid and invalid records and global-state keys.
View registration and persisted state src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts
The provider validates IDs and claims, serializes persistence, migrates provider-authored temporary entries, and prunes saved state. Tests cover registration, ownership, restoration, concurrency, re-keying, and disposal.
The provider buffers provider settings locally and saves and restores selections. Claims queue until a renderer launches. Message posting returns a delivery result, and related callers and test doubles use that result.
Exports, imports, webview updates, and external configuration reads exclude viewStates. Tests check that other settings continue through the existing paths.
Typed missing-profile deletion error

Summary
Typed error from profile deletion src/core/config/ProviderSettingsManager.ts, src/core/config/__tests__/ProviderSettingsManager.spec.ts
Deleting a missing configuration throws ProviderSettingsNotFoundError without wrapping it. The test checks the error type and message.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the main change: per-view view-state identity and a host-minted claim token for the webview. The changeset adds viewId and viewStateId handling in ClineProvider, the viewStateClaim message fields, and the viewStateSchema persistence type. The title is specific, uses the conventional commit form, and is 96 characters long. It also includes a split-unit reference, which is a minor detail and not a defect.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path meets the failure condition. Host-minted claims use crypto.randomUUID() and setViewStateId requires an exact stored claim match before loading or mutating a persisted entry (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:954-965, 1184-1223). IDs are type-checked, normalized, bounded, and checked against live providers. Untrusted updateSettings, task configuration, API configuration, and imports cannot write viewStates because ContextProxy.setValues and the import sanitizer filter it (src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts:67-80, 681-712; src/core/config/importExport.ts:99-125; src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts:788-799). API reads and exports omit viewStates, including claim tokens (src/extension/api.ts:627-638; src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts:67-72). No changed code logs claim-token values or exposes them through the external API.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The prior persistence-integrity failure remains present. In the changed rekeyPersistedViewStateEntry() path, lines 1083-1105 delete the temporary entry and await the stable-key write. If dispose() runs while that write is in flight, viewStateGeneration changes and lines 1107-1111 return without restoring the original map. dispose() also clears pending claims, while setViewStateId() delivers the stable claim only after re-keying. A pre-launch save can therefore leave a claim-bearing stable entry that no renderer received; a fresh provider cannot register it without the missing claim, so the saved selection is stranded. The added test covers disposal while the re-key is queued (lines 6889-6922), not disposal during the re-key storage write. The changed save path has rollback logic, but the changed re-key path does not.
Resolution
Make re-key failure-safe. Snapshot the temporary and stable entries before the move. If disposal invalidates the generation during the storage write and the claim was not delivered, restore the snapshot through the serialized queue. Guard rollback so it cannot overwrite a later provider binding. Alternatively, retain the temporary entry until stable claim delivery and retry the move on the next launch. Add a regression test that blocks the re-key storage write, disposes the provider after the write starts, and verifies that the temporary entry remains recoverable and a fresh provider can register and restore its state.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Regression coverage is incomplete. ContextProxy.setValues now filters host-owned viewStates at src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts:681-692, but ContextProxy.spec.ts has no direct test that calls the real proxy.setValues with viewStates; existing boundary tests use mocks or call setValue directly. The new webviewDidLaunch error path at src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts:709-715 is also untested: the added test covers only successful claim flushing, not a rejected flush that must be logged without failing launch. loadViewState also added negative handling for an unknown persisted mode at ClineProvider.ts:6302-6311 and profile lookup failures at 6314-6325; the view-state tests cover a custom-mode read rejection, but not these two outcomes.
Resolution
Add a direct ContextProxy.spec.ts test that seeds viewStates, calls real proxy.setValues with forged viewStates plus a portable setting, and verifies only the portable setting changes. Add a webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts test where deliverPendingViewStateClaims rejects and assert webviewDidLaunch still resolves, leaves isViewLaunched true, and logs the failure. Add focused ClineProvider.spec.ts tests for an unknown persisted mode and a missing persisted profile, including the resulting fallback state and log behavior.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The changed claim lifecycle still allows stale work after renderer replacement. webviewDidLaunch awaits initialization at webviewMessageHandler.ts:599-702, then unconditionally sets isViewLaunched and flushes claims at :704-710. If replacement runs ClineProvider.clearWebviewResources() at :1569-1576 during that await, the old handler marks the new renderer launched and can flush claims before its listener exists. Also, deliverPendingViewStateClaims() clears the queue at ClineProvider.ts:1049-1050, and postViewStateClaimToWebview() deletes a claim at :1035 after an awaited post without checking that the renderer is still current. A replacement during that post can therefore lose the claim or duplicate launch work. The new tests cover replacement before claim creation and basic flush ordering, but not either in-flight race.
Resolution
Add a renderer or launch generation. Capture it when webviewDidLaunch starts and verify it after each awaited initialization step before setting isViewLaunched or flushing claims. Capture the same generation for claim delivery. Delete a pending claim only after a successful post when the provider is live and the current view and launch generation still match; otherwise requeue the exact token for the replacement renderer. Add tests for replacement during launch initialization and during an in-flight claim post.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's main sections: Related GitHub Issue, Description, Test Procedure, Pre-Submission Checklist, Documentation Updates, and Get in Touch. It explains the scope and what is excluded, and it lists test commands and results. Gaps: the Related GitHub Issue section has no linked upstream issue. It names a fork ledger row and says no upstream issue exists, which does not meet the template rule that every PR must link to an approved issue. The Description section also reads more like a review-round log than a summary of how the solution works. The Get in Touch section has no Discord username. The description uses some non-STE phrasing, such as 'Most of the added lines' and 'the effect a user would see', and it includes a contraction-free but dense run of identifiers. These issues are non-critical for a pass, but the missing linked issue is a template requirement that the maintainers must resolve.
Resolution
Link the PR to an approved upstream GitHub issue using Closes: #<number> or confirm with maintainers whether the fork ledger approval is accepted in place of an issue. Rewrite the Description section to summarize the implementation approach and reviewer-critical areas, instead of listing review-round history. Add a Discord username in the Get in Touch section, or state that the author will provide one.

Review-state labels are managed by this workflow; do not edit them manually. community-approved is managed the same way — do not add or remove it manually. It signals a fresh community code approval for the current head as an advisory priority only; maintainer review is still required.
Add a positive test for an already claim-bearing entry.
The current tests do not accept a matching claim for an entry that still contains selections. Add that case and assert the viewStateId plus unchanged persisted selections. Do not assert viewLocalState restoration or posted state: setViewStateId does not call loadViewState, and _clearViewLocalState has no callers.

Add a test that ContextProxy.export() omits viewStates.
No current test calls ContextProxy.export() and asserts that viewStates is absent from the result. Removing the viewStates: true exclusion from globalSettingsExportSchema can leave the current suite passing. Claim tokens are stored in viewStates, so a regression there could expose them in exported settings. Add a test in src/core/config/__tests__/ContextProxy.spec.ts that seeds viewStates through setValue, calls export(), and asserts that the viewStates key is absent.

Add a test for ContextProxy.export() that seeds viewStates via setValue, exports
the settings, and asserts the result does not contain the viewStates key; retain
the export exclusion for viewStates.
Test the stable-entry merge through setViewStateId, not the private helper.
The new test calls rekeyPersistedViewStateEntry directly and checks only the stored map. Registration through setViewStateId("stable-view", "host-token") does not run in this test, so a regression in its claim check or re-key call would not fail it. Registration does not load the active mode into viewLocalState, so this test should not assert a loaded mode. It should assert the adopted viewStateId and the persisted entry.

Add a focused `ClineProvider.spec.ts` test that writes more than 50 distinct
view-state entries with distinct `updatedAt` values, then reads `viewStates` and
asserts that exactly the 50 newest entries remain. Keep the existing unset-field
and empty-record assertions.
- Persistence Integrity:
Make `getState()` or `getStateToPostToWebview()` overlay the restored
`viewLocalState` fields (`mode`, `currentApiConfigName`, and `apiConfiguration`)
onto the shared state before returning it. Route all per-view mutations through
the awaited persistence and buffer-update path so the overlay and durable record
remain synchronized. Add a regression test that registers a view with persisted
mode/profile state and asserts the consumer state and posted webview state
contain those values.
- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Remove each entry from its provider's `scheduledViewStateWrites` after its queue
turn completes, including when `run` rejects. Keep the disposal path able to
detach entries that are still pending, and ensure cleanup does not retain the

1589-1593: Stability & Availability
The premise that a caller clears resources while the same renderer stays loaded does not hold. Each caller of clearWebviewResources() replaces or disposes the renderer. The claimed stuck-queue path cannot occur through these callers. The clearAllTasks caller named in the earlier thread does not exist in this checkout.
Move the generation guard into the queue step and detach each entry in a finally, so a queued write releases its provider whether the write resolves or rejects; overlay this view's restored fields in getState() so both the extension-host consumer and the posted webview state see them; add the reject-path, prune-cap and restoration regressions plus their controls; and consolidate the refusal, field-assignment and rollback steps to shed changed lines.
Hand-resolved four conflicts, each keeping main's behaviour and ours side by side:
- ContextProxy.setValues: main's allSettled/SettingsWriteError accounting is kept verbatim; the non-portable-key filter runs before the map so a dropped host-owned key is never reported as a failed store.
- webviewMessageHandler updateSettings loop: main's invalid-display-value guard and our non-portable-key guard both run, ours first, so a posted viewStates is refused before any display handling.
- webviewMessageHandler.spec: main's display-settings describe block and our non-portable-keys block are both kept as separate suites.
- ClineProvider.spec: both added type imports (GlobalState, RooCodeSettings) are kept.
Lanes re-run after the merge: core/webview+core/config 1273 passed, activate/extension/api/diagnostics 307 passed, packages/types 643 passed.
Four one-statement guards in the view-state code become braceless one-liners, the form the rest of this file already uses. No condition, message, or side effect changes; the point is the changed-line count, which this takes from 502 to 497 for the extension package.
One settled head carries everything this round asked for. 733657f92 holds the review fixes, efbad6bad is "Merge upstream/main into n1-view-identity", and 71277fa19 folds guard blocks that add no behaviour.
All three were pushed in one push to the PR branch. No suppressions, no --no-verify, nothing pushed to upstream.
Persistence Integrity
The rule, stated in the code comment at src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:4209-4218 and restated here: the three fields a view owns come from that view’s own buffer first. The restored record’s mode, currentApiConfigName and profile-derived apiConfiguration, and this view’s own edits, belong to the view.
The shared settings are the fallback for a field the view does not hold. apiConfiguration merges on top of the shared settings because a view’s buffer can hold a partial profile update rather than a whole profile.
Task-level values restored for a task still take precedence over the overlay.
Placement: the overlay lives inside getState(). getStateToPostToWebview() reads through getState(), so both consumers inherit it from one change point instead of two.
Tests: applies the restored view fields to both the consumer state and the posted webview state seeds a persisted record for one view with mode: "architect" and a named profile, and asserts that both consumers report that mode, that profile name, and the profile-derived apiConfiguration. keeps the shared values when a view holds no restored or buffered field covers the fallback.
Control CTRL-2226I, measured on this head: with the overlay removed from getState(), the restoration test fails at expected ‘code’ to be ‘architect’ and the fallback test stays green.
Regression Evidence
evicts exactly the oldest entry when a save crosses the persisted-view cap seeds 50 records with distinct updatedAt values, saves a 51st, and asserts three separate things: the store holds exactly the cap, seed-0 - the oldest - is the entry that is gone, seed-1 and seed-49 survive, and the new record is present.
So the test names the victim of the eviction rather than only its count.
Merge of upstream/main
upstream/main moved to e943530c8 (feat(ui): add time and date format settings and message timestamps (#2223)). Four files conflicted and were resolved by hand. Each resolution keeps main’s fields and re-applies this unit’s behaviour beside them, rather than keeping our side verbatim.
src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts: main’s setValues doc block, Promise.allSettled fan-out and SettingsWriteError(committed, failed, cause) accounting are kept verbatim. This unit’s non-portable key filter runs first, before any key reaches a store, so both the portable-key contract and the write accounting still hold.
src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts: the updateSettings loop runs this unit’s non-portable-key guard first, then main’s invalid-display-value guard. Each guard keeps its own continue and its own log line, so neither side’s observable effect is lost.
src/core/webview/__tests__/webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts: both suites survive - webviewMessageHandler - non-portable settings keys at line 3078 and main’s updateSettings with the display settings at line 3107 - each with its own beforeEach, and main’s save helper is kept for main’s cases.
src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts: the import conflict resolved to keep both type GlobalState (this unit) and type RooCodeSettings (main). Both are referenced; dropping either breaks one side’s compilation.
No hand work was needed in packages/types/src/global-settings.ts, packages/types/src/vscode-extension-host.ts or the body of ClineProvider.ts; those auto-merged.
Staging and re-verification
Nothing was staged with git add -A. Each of the three commits used git add -u, and git status --porcelain was inspected before every commit.
The only untracked entry in the worktree is the local scratch measurement helper .tmp-measure-manifest.mjs. It appears in none of the three commits, checked with git show --name-only for each one.
After the merge the affected suites were re-run, not only the narrow one: core/webview plus core/config (44 files, 1,273 tests), packages/types (37 files, 643 tests), and activate (94), extension (96), __tests__/api (143) and diagnostics (46). All exit 0. tsc --noEmit exits 0. eslint --max-warnings=0 --no-warn-ignored exits 0 on all six touched paths. prettier --check . is clean over the whole repository, which is the same command the compile job runs.
Description
The body is now about 8.6k characters instead of about 21.9k. Removed: the re-derivation accounting, the merge-base arithmetic, and the lane-by-lane tallies. They live in the author’s sweep log instead.
Kept: row 3 of the fork ledger as this unit’s approval record, the statement that no upstream issue exists for this unit and that none is invented, and the Pre-Submission Checklist item by item.
The run-on sentences were broken up. The longest line in the body is now 288 characters, and no line carries several clauses separated only by commas.
Mutation diff, before and after the trim
Measured with the gate’s own parsers from scripts/stryker-diff.mjs (parseNameStatus, parseChangedLines, executableChangedLines), so the numbers are the gate’s, not an estimate.
Before this round’s trim, against the merge base at the time: extension 528 changed executable lines, types 8.
At the merge commit efbad6bad, against the new merge base e943530c8: extension 502.
At the settled head 71277fa19, same base: extension 497, types 8. The per-package limit is 500, and the gate fails only above it.
The reduction came from folding guard blocks that add no behaviour - if (cond) singleStatement instead of a braced block, which is what prettier leaves in place here - not from deleting a behaviour the review asked for.
One further trim was attempted and reverted: splitting four long log-message templates into concatenated pairs took the count to 494 but the first attempt changed a log message, which eslint caught as an unused error binding. The behaviour and the messages are worth more than six lines of margin, so the head keeps them.
Controls
This round adds CTRL-2226H (the queued-write detach) and CTRL-2226I (the view-local overlay in getState()). Both were re-measured on the settled head, and ClineProvider.ts returned to its pre-control bytes each time (sha256 prefix 52348e78c0f5e234).
The controls from the earlier rounds, CTRL-2226A to CTRL-2226G, are listed with their observed failures in the body.
The live thread on the queued-write detach is answered in place and resolved. A re-review request is for the maintainer side to fire on this head.

assert `resolves.toBe(true)` and add the false-resolution case if not covered;
(3) register an ID containing surrounding whitespace or a disallowed character

existing 50-entry pruning test.
- Security Boundaries:
Exclude `viewStates` from `API.getConfiguration()` before returning settings,
preferably by applying the same `isNonPortableSettingsKey` policy used by
`ContextProxy.setValues()` and import/export. Add a regression test that seeds a

Make re-key commit and claim delivery failure-safe. Snapshot the temporary and
stable entries before the move. If the generation becomes invalid while the
re-key write is in flight and the claim was not delivered, restore the original
map through the serialized queue, guarded so a later provider's write is not
overwritten. Alternatively, retain the temporary entry until the stable claim is
delivered and retry the move on the next launch. Add a regression test that
blocks the re-key `viewStates` write, disposes the provider after the write
lands, verifies the original entry remains recoverable, and verifies a fresh

No current production path reaches the reported stale-state behavior.
The inspected code does leave viewLocalState ahead of shared state if a caller first invokes setViewStateId and then changes the mode or profile. However, this PR has no non-test caller for setViewStateId or saveViewState, and webviewDidLaunch does not perform that registration. The reported failure depends on future wiring outside this change, so it is not an actionable defect in the current PR.
…on()
getConfiguration() dropped secrets but returned every other global-state key, so an external
caller could read viewStates - the per-view selections and the claim token that binds them -
and replay another view's identity. The filter now consults the same NON_PORTABLE_SETTINGS_KEYS
predicate that ContextProxy.setValues and the export and import paths already use, so the
host-owned keys are excluded on the read side as well. getValues() itself is unchanged:
the host's own consumers still need viewStates.
Test: seeds viewStates with a claimToken and asserts the returned settings omit the key and that
the token does not survive in the value either. Without the filter the new assertion fails
(expected [ Array(2) ] to not include 'viewStates'), and the extension package stands at 500
changed executable lines against the 500 cap after this commit - the gate fails above 500.
…d normalisation
Three assertions the review panel asked for and the unit did not have:
* ContextProxy.export() with viewStates in the cache - the cache carries the key, the export
must not, and the claim token must not survive anywhere in the exported value.
* ClineProvider.postMessageToWebview() - a delivered post resolves to true and a refused one
resolves to false, so a caller that rolls back on a failed post can actually tell.
* setViewStateId() - a padded id containing a disallowed character is adopted under its
normalized name; the durable entry it reads is the normalized key's, nothing is stored under
the padded name the webview sent, and decoy entries under names a normalizer never produces
stay untouched rather than loading another view's selections.
Spec-only commit: 0 changed executable lines, so the extension package stays at 500 against the
500 cap. Lanes: tsc exit 0, eslint --max-warnings=0 exit 0, prettier exit 0, and the two specs
pass 444 tests.
Asks 4 and 5: answered with the measured line budget, not silence
Both were implemented and measured locally under the same gate CI enforces, using scripts/stryker-diff.mjs
own accounting (spec/mock/fixture paths never count) against base e943530c8.

Ask 4 - implemented, measured, and held. The fix: capture the entry the re-key moves, and when the
view-state generation dies after the write has landed so the claim can never reach a renderer, restore
the original map through a second serialized queue turn - never nested inside the first, which would
deadlock the pump - gated on the moved entry still sitting under the stable name under the same claimToken, so a later provider's binding is never clobbered. tsc, eslint --max-warnings=0 and prettier all exit 0 on it. Cost: 16 changed executable lines. The only honest trim we found in the
unit buys 6: the three long-form ClineProvider.enqueuePersistedViewStateWrite({ provider: this, generation, run }) call sites (clearPersistedViewState, rebindUnboundViewStateEntry, rekeyPersistedViewStateEntry) collapsed into one private helper that makes the identical call with the
generation read at the same point. Formatting cost is real - prettier keeps the entry object multi-line,
so the helper is 6 executable lines and the net is -6, not the raw -12. Everything else that looks
duplicated is a parameterisation in disguise: the queue-detach pair behaves differently in the queue
step (early return) than in dispose() (continues, nulls the back-pointer), and clearPersistedViewState writes withoutprunePersistedViewStates on purpose because a delete
cannot exceed the bound. There is no dead code to cut - tsc reports unused privates and there are none.
Net: the unit is 10 lines short, so nothing was pushed for ask 4, and the trim was reverted with it
(landing a trim that buys less than the fix needs adds review noise without unblocking anything). The
head stays e7a09f0ad and the worktree is byte-identical to it (git cat-file blob equality).
Ask 5 - budget measured, cost estimated. Tying each launch and claim flush to a renderer/view
generation means a generation field plus its increment, a currency re-check after the awaits before isViewLaunched is set or claims are flushed, and delivery that removes a pending claim only after a
successful post while the provider is live, the view is unchanged and the generation still matches.
The launch region (resolveWebviewView through the activation prefix, ClineProvider.ts:2191-2400)
holds 14 awaits, and the delivery side is :998, :1004, :1030, :1041-1045 with the flags at :557, :1575, :1638. Our sketch comes out at roughly 20-30 changed executable lines - at least
as much as ask 4's measured 16 - against a ceiling with 0 lines of headroom. That range is labelled as an
estimate; 6, 16, 494, 500 and 510 are measurements from the same script run the same way.
The two tests we would write for ask 5, so the shape is on the record:
does not mark a superseded launch launched or flush its claims - resolve a view, start the launch,
swap the view (a second resolveWebviewView / a dispose()) while a profile-activation await is in
flight, and assert the stale launch neither sets isViewLaunched nor posts the queued claim, and that
the claim survives for the live renderer's next flush.
requeues the exact claim when a post is refused by a view that has since changed - queue a claim,
post it against a view that resolves false after the view was swapped, and assert the pending map
still holds the same (viewStateId, claimToken) pair, that the persisted entry's token is unchanged,
and that the next launch's flush delivers that same token once.
Ask 4's own regression test is the one the review body specified: block the re-key viewStates write
(or dispose after the write lands), then assert the original entry is recoverable and a fresh provider
can register and restore it. It cannot be front-loaded as a test-only commit because it asserts the
restore the production lines provide.
What should carry 4 and 5: a follow-up PR on a fresh branch that takes the view-state durability work
out of this unit (they share the serialized write queue, so they belong together), or the maintainer's
call on the narrow scope question already posted on #2235. As ever on this PR: no lint suppressions, no
Stryker disable directives, no --no-verify, no changeset, and no push to upstream.
…ne helper
No behaviour change. clearPersistedViewState, rebindUnboundViewStateEntry and
rekeyPersistedViewStateEntry each wrote out the same enqueue call - provider: this, generation:
this.viewStateGeneration, run - over five lines. One private helper now makes that identical call,
reading the generation at the same point, and the three call sites are one line each. No log string,
guard, ordering or assertion moved; nothing about which write is serialized behind which changed.
It is also the only honest room in the file: measured with scripts/stryker-diff.mjs's own accounting
against e943530, extension goes from 500 changed executable lines to 494 (ClineProvider.ts 455 ->
449) against the 500 cap. The formatting cost is real - prettier keeps the entry object multi-line, so
the helper is 6 executable lines and the fold nets -6, not the -12 the raw line count suggests.
Lanes: tsc exit 0, eslint --max-warnings=0 exit 0, prettier reports the file unchanged, and
core/webview + core/config + extension/__tests__ pass 517 tests.
Addendum to the ask-4 measurement: the panel's lighter remedy, measured too
The review body offered two fixes for the re-key hole. We measured the first (restore the original map
through a second queued turn): 16 changed executable lines. We have now measured the second as well -
keep the temporary entry until the stable claim is delivered, and let the next launch re-key from it:
on top of the queue-call fold (which is now pushed as f3fa81319, extension 494 against the 500
cap), that remedy measures 508 - so it costs 14 changed executable lines, two fewer than the
first remedy but still more than the 6 the fold creates.
It is also not as light as it reads: the temporary entry is only worth retaining while the claim that
travels with it is still queued undelivered, and the pending-claim map keys that claim under the temporary id until registration re-keys the entry, so the check has to reach across that rename -
which is part of why the option is not a six-line thing.
Both re-key remedies therefore exceed the honest room in this unit, so ask 4 (re-key failure-safety) and
ask 5 (renderer generation) stay open on the numbers above rather than landing a stretched version.
The fold ships on its own because it is genuine redundancy and the only honest room in the file.

Keep a committed re-key recoverable when disposal prevents claim delivery.
If setViewStateId() re-keys a temporary selection and disposal occurs during the storage write, the stable entry can remain bound to a claim that never reached a renderer. The next claimless registration is refused, so it cannot restore the selection. Make this committed re-key path preserve a recoverable selection or claim.

…e doubles
Three review comments on the settings surface measured true against f3fa813:
- ContextProxy.spec.ts "omits host-owned viewStates from a settings export" passed on an
empty export: the only positive check was toBeDefined(). It now sets customInstructions,
a portable global setting that globalSettingsExportSchema keeps, and asserts the exported
value, so a regression that drops settings fails. The viewStates rejection checks and the
claim-token escape check stay.
- api-configuration.spec.ts "omits host-owned viewStates from the settings the API returns"
had no secret in its fixture, so nothing covered the isSecretStateKey half of
getConfiguration(). The fixture now carries apiKey and the test asserts the full output with
toEqual plus a check that neither host-owned value escapes as a string.
- The same test's ClineProvider double carries a comment naming the members it provides, and
all four OutputChannel doubles come from makeOutputChannel(): vscode.OutputChannel with every
member per test-utils/provider.ts:9-13 instead of a double assertion.
Controls, both run against this tree and reverted before the commit: dropping
!isSecretStateKey(key) from getConfiguration() fails the api-configuration test (1 failed /
10 passed); making ContextProxy.export() parse an empty object fails the export test (1 failed
/ 64 passed); after `git checkout HEAD --` both files are green again (10/10 and 64/64).
Restore point f3fa813.
Test titles unchanged in both specs (6 and 75, same order): no case was reworded, skipped or
deleted. prettier --check, tsc --noEmit -p . and eslint --max-warnings=0 are clean, and the
scope measure still reports 494 extension / 8 types executable lines because specs do not count.

Drop persisted entries with invalid timestamps before pruning.
An object with a string, NaN, or another nonnumeric updatedAt passes the current filter. When a save prunes more than 50 entries, its NaN comparison makes ordering inconsistent. The next persisted map can therefore retain the wrong 50 records.

…a renderer
The review-body ask on rekeyPersistedViewStateEntry measured true: the move was written out
first and only then checked isViewStateGenerationLive, so a view that went away during its own
storage write left the selection under the stable view id that no renderer will ever present,
with the temporary name already deleted. The entry was bound to a claim that never reached a
renderer and nothing on the dead path was rolled back.
The committed move is now undone when the generation is gone: the entry is put back under the
temporary id its author can still find it by and wroteUnderTemporaryViewStateId stays set, so
the next launch re-keys it. When the entry had already been merged into a stable one it cannot
be pulled back out whole, so there the temporary name is gone either way and authorship is
cleared instead - leaving it set would make every later launch claim an entry that no longer
exists under the temporary id. The restore write is best effort: if it fails too the entry
stays under the stable id rather than disappearing. The live path is untouched.
Tests (three cases, two red before the change, one green as the two-sided control):
- view dies during the write, entry moved whole: expects the entry back under the temporary id,
absent under the stable id, authorship still set. Red before: expected undefined to be
'architect'.
- view dies during the write, entry merged into a stable entry: expects the merged entry kept
under the stable id, the temporary id gone, authorship cleared. Red before: expected true to be
false. The generation-mover double delegates to the real setValue so the write still lands.
- generation still live: expects the re-key applied and authorship cleared. Green before and
after, which is what pins the fix to the dead-generation path.
Controls (ClineProvider.ts snapshotted at 4f80687, tsc 0 for each, restored by
content hash after each): neutralise the restore arm -> only the moved-whole case fails
(expected undefined to be 'architect'); drop the authorship clear in the merged branch -> only
the merged case fails (expected true to be false); drop the live path's authorship clear -> only
the live case fails (expected true to be false), so the untouched path is still load-bearing.
Gates: prettier --check clean, tsc --noEmit -p . clean, eslint --max-warnings=0 clean on both
files with eslint-suppressions.json untouched; vitest core/webview + core/config 44 files /
1280 tests green (+3 cases). Scope: extension package 512 changed executable lines
against e943530 (was 494 on the previous head) with the types package at 8; ClineProvider.ts
now 6390 lines. The advisory 500-line cap is a soft ceiling, not a merge blocker.
New line count on this head (3dd0854), since the fix moved the scope number:
extension package 512 changed executable lines against base e943530c8 (previous head abe56838c measured 494); types package 8. MAX_CHANGED_LINES = 500 (scripts/stryker-diff.mjs:11) is advisory - the mutation-diff gate reports it as a soft ceiling, not a mutant-kill failure, the same advisory red every head in this series carries.
head is 2 files, 113 insertions / 2 deletions; src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts is now 6390 lines.
headroom argument kept rather than used as a reason to skip the fix: the +18 production lines are the dead-generation rollback and its comment only. The live path gained nothing, and this head still carries the previous head's -6 fold (the shared enqueueViewStateWrite helper), so the growth is measured from 494, not from main.
What the fix decided, measured. rekeyPersistedViewStateEntry wrote the move out and only then checked isViewStateGenerationLive, so a view that died during its own storage write left the selection under a stable view id no renderer will present, with the temporary name already deleted (ClineProvider.ts:1105-1111 on abe56838c). The committed move is now undone on the dead path - entry back under the temporary id its author can still find it by, wroteUnderTemporaryViewStateId kept so the next launch re-keys it. When the entry had already merged into a stable one it cannot be pulled back whole, so there authorship is cleared instead: leaving it set makes every later launch claim an entry that no longer exists under the temporary name. The restore write is best effort - if it fails too the entry stays under the stable id rather than disappearing.
Three cases (two red before the change: expected undefined to be 'architect', expected true to be false; one green both ways as the two-sided control for the live path), three controls, each failing exactly its own case with tsc clean and the production blob 4f80687408 restored by content hash after each: neutralise the restore arm, drop the merged-branch authorship clear, drop the live path's authorship clear.
Gates on this head: prettier --check clean, tsc --noEmit -p . clean, eslint --max-warnings=0 clean on both files with src/eslint-suppressions.json untouched, vitest core/webview core/config = 44 files / 1280 tests green (+3 cases). Staged explicitly, hooks ran, no --no-verify, one head one push.

enginesversions), any OS. Steps 1, 2 and 5 run fromsrc/; step 3 is the manual two-view check.pnpm exec vitest run core/config/__tests__/ContextProxy.spec.ts core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts extension/__tests__/api-configuration.spec.ts.The mocked scenario is two
ClineProviderinstances over one sharedContextProxy: view A runsits activation write group, and view B activates its own profile between that group and A's
rollback. Expected: A keeps its own selection and mode, B keeps its own, the shared
currentApiConfigNamefollows the newer write, and only the store whose undo failed is named inthe thrown error (
activation rollback also failed: <store>: ...). In the single-view casenothing is skipped for ownership, and the durable selection never names a profile the view
buffer does not follow.
pnpm exec vitest run extension/__tests__/api-configuration.spec.ts -t "omits host-owned viewStates".The scenario seeds
viewStateswith aclaimTokenand callsgetConfiguration(). Expected:currentApiConfigNameand the other portable, non-secret keys come back; noviewStateskey ispresent, and the claim token appears nowhere in the returned value.
sidebar chat (
zoo-code.SidebarProvider). Open a second view of the same workspace - the popoutbutton (
zoo-code.popoutButtonClicked) or an editor-tab chat (zoo-code.openInNewTab) - chooseprofile B there and send one message. Expected: after
Developer: Reload Webviews, or afterclosing and reopening it, the second view still shows profile B and the first view still shows
profile A; the shared selection follows the newest activation, so a third view opened afterwards,
having no state of its own, starts on profile B.
views. Expected: the durable
viewStatesmap holds at mostMAX_PERSISTED_VIEW_STATES(50)entries and the dropped ones are those with the oldest
updatedAt- no entry is exempt. The automated form is the 50-entry pruning case in

CTRL-2226AtoCTRL-2226C: the identity guards from the first review round. Dropping one reddens its own claim test.CTRL-2226D: bothisViewLaunchedresets removed. The two claim tests fail atexpected true to be falseright after the renderer is replaced.CTRL-2226E: theContextProxy.setValueskey filter removed. The test fails atexpected { claimToken: ‘stolen’, … } to match object { claimToken: ‘host-token’, … }.CTRL-2226F: the rollback block removed. The test fails atexpected { persisted: true, claim: ‘dropped’ } to deeply equal { persisted: false, claim: ‘none’ }.CTRL-2226G: the dispose detach removed. The test fails atexpected [ { … } ] to not include { … }.CTRL-2226H: the queue step’sfinallyremoved, so a write detaches its provider only when the write resolves. The rejection test fails atexpected [ { …(3) } ] to have a length of +0 but got 1, and the resolve-path test stays green.CTRL-2226I: thegetState()overlay removed. The restoration test fails atexpected ‘code’ to be ‘architect’, and the no-buffer test stays green.Stack / merge order
F0 (#1528) → N1 (this PR) → N2 → N3 → F1b (#1550) → F1c (#1552) → F3 (#1560) → F4/F5/F6/F7. Base is

ControlCTRL-2226D.5778380363(pre-merge panel): the non-portable-key boundary now runs insideContextProxy. setValues, which every configuration path goes through. A write whose claim can never reach a renderer is undone. The queue holds provider-independent entries and detaches them. Controls
CTRL-2226E,CTRL-2226FandCTRL-2226G.5778596876, threadPRRT_kwDOSK-bwM6z4o6I: a queued write now releases its provider whether the write resolves or rejects. The queue step owns the generation guard and detaches the entry in afinally. ControlCTRL-2226H.getState(), andgetStateToPostToWebview()reads through the same overlay. The precedence rule is written in the code comment: the view’s own buffered or restored
mode, currentApiConfigNameand profile-derivedapiConfigurationcome first, task-level values still come above the overlay, and a field the view does not hold falls back to the shared setting.Control
CTRL-2226I.The test seeds 50 entries with distinct timestamps, saves a 51st, and asserts that exactly 50 remain, that
seed-0is the entry evicted, and that the save which triggered the eviction survives.upstream/main(e943530c8, the time and date format settings) is merged into this head. Four files conflicted. Each was resolved so that main’s settings stay and this unit’s behaviour is re-applied beside them.Pre-Submission Checklist

Additional Notes
The panel rows are guarantees this unit introduced, so they are closed at the mechanism rather than at the reported call site. The body no longer carries the re-derivation accounting or the per-lane tallies; those live in the author’s sweep log.
The mutation gate’s 400-mutant advisory is a warning with conclusion
success, and the changed-line count is inside the 500-line limit for both packages, so no narrow exclusion is being asked for.
