fix: forget cached profile previews when logging out or deleting the account - #1249
handleLogout calls it next to clearStashes and clearRecentSearches and account deletion calls it next to clearRecentSearches
it also bumps a cacheGeneration so fetchPreview drops a response that started before the clear and a request still in flight at logout can't write the old account's view back
a follow from the card goes through unlessCleared so one that finishes after the clear can't write it back either and the generation is read there because inside a component the React Compiler reads it again at the comparison
the card's follow button says Follow to a guest like FollowButton already does since whether you follow someone lives in shared state that outlives logging out
the logout link sets preserveState={false} so landing back on log/show remounts the page and a card that was open when you logged out closes instead of staying up over the guest page
one sentence in KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md under muting and blocking
Validation
lint types type coverage JS tests build and the full pest suite pass except 3 MobileAuthorizationControllerTest cases that production already fails since 5be0cc20 (fix: redirects)
two new tests in AuthorHover.test.tsx (run by bun run test:unit through SeriesStash.test.ts): a cached preview with isMuting opens empty after clearUserPreviews() and a response that lands after the clear stays out of the cache and the card
they fail when the clear does nothing or when the generation check or its bump is gone
UserMenuLogout.test.tsx checks the logout link doesn't preserve state and fails without the prop
FollowState.test.tsx checks a follow from the card that lands after logging out stays out of the cleared previews and fails without the wrapper
and that after logging out a card offers to follow someone the last account followed and fails without the guest check
in the browser on local data: an account that mutes @previewbob and that @previewbob follows hovers them then logs out from the menu and hovers them again on Latest and the same with deleting the account from settings
and with the mouse resting on an open @card-demo card that shows Follows you logging out from the keyboard used to leave that card up on the guest Trending page and now it's gone
and following @card-demo from its card with the response held back 20s in the page then logging out before it lands used to show the guest Following and Follows you on that card and now it's the loading state
and following @card-demo from its card then logging out used to show the guest Following on that card and now it's Follow
Visual evidence
signed out right after logging out of an account that mutes @previewbob and that @previewbob follows with the preview request answering 429 so the card can't refresh (simulated by stubbing fetch for /preview in the page)
before
after
the after card is the loading state it already had and no styles or layout changed so light theme and other sizes aren't shown
Device verification

hover cards only open where (hover: hover) matches so touch and phones aren't affected

Limitations
the banned page has its own sign out and delete buttons that don't clear the cache since a banned account only sees that page and would have to get banned mid session in the same tab for it to matter
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
User previews are cleared after logout or successful account deletion, so cached user information does not remain visible in the tab.
Responses and follow updates from before previews are cleared no longer repopulate or change them afterward.
Logged-out viewers now see Follow in user previews only when signed in.
Logging out no longer preserves the current page state.
Documentation
Clarified that logging out or deleting an account forgets muted and blocked users, and that hover cards display a Muted badge.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The change adds an exported function to clear the user-preview cache. Logout and successful account deletion call it. Generation checks prevent stale preview responses and follow updates from changing preview data after a clear. Follow-state display now requires an authenticated user.
Changes: User preview cache cleanup
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Preview-cache reset and validation resources/js/components/user-preview.tsx, tests/Unit/AuthorHover.test.tsx
Adds clearUserPreviews() and rejects stale in-flight preview responses. Tests cover clearing cached relationship data and responses that arrive after a clear.
Follow updates use a generation-guarded callback. Follow-state display requires an authenticated user. Tests cover follow success after a clear and the logged-out follow label.
Logout and deletion cleanup resources/js/components/user-menu-content.tsx, resources/js/components/delete-user.tsx, tests/Unit/UserMenuLogout.test.tsx, KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md
Logout and successful account deletion clear user previews. The logout link sets preserveState to false, and a unit test checks that setting. The mute description mentions the Muted badge and states that logout or account deletion forgets muted and blocked users.
Logout and account deletion now clear cached profile previews and guard against late responses. One narrow race remains: a hover started just before logout can briefly cache the previous account's relationship details. Capturing the generation when the hover timer is scheduled closes it; the impact is limited.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 4a188
The change strengthens isolation of account-specific previews during logout and deletion. A timing-dependent privacy exposure remains in the browser cache, but comparison with the PR base shows that it predates this change. No new server-side authority or data-access boundary is introduced.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated disclosure scope is viewer-specific preview data retained within a browser application's memory and later displayed after an identity transition. Exploitation requires the relevant browser state and transition timing; the changed code does not grant arbitrary access to other accounts or additional server privileges.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The two retained findings concern residual delayed-request exposure. A pending hover callback that survives clearing can start a request in the new cache epoch before logout invalidates authentication. Its old-account response can then be cached and displayed later. The base already permitted this flow without any generation check, so the findings remain reportable Security conditions but are not active PR-introduced architecture concerns.
observed — Invalidation is not centralized across every identity-transition UI. The unchanged banned-account page still submits deletion and logout without calling clearUserPreviews(). This predates the PR; exposure depends on previously cached previews surviving in the same application instance.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Server identity remains authoritative. Preview relationship data is derived from the current authenticated user; follow mutations remain behind authentication, throttling, and authorization rejecting self-follow and blocked relationships. The new client checks supplement those controls rather than replacing them.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Pointer-leave handling cancels pending hover work, unmount cleanup clears its timer, and logout explicitly disables page-state preservation. These constrain the residual timing window, but clearUserPreviews() itself neither cancels delayed creators nor resets mounted component data.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Extend identity invalidation to delayed request creation and all logout/deletion callers, rather than relying only on request-start epochs and eventual unmount. Validate the transition where clearing occurs before the hover delay expires.

@coderabbitai about the tsx nitpick tests/Unit/SeriesStash.test.ts already runs every tests/Unit/*.test.tsx through vp test run since #1220 so bun run test:unit and composer test include AuthorHover.test.tsx
my description said the opposite and that line is fixed now
clearUserPreviews() clears only the module cache. An open UserPreview retains its data, position, and mounted portal. The logout handler does not close the preview. Because logout starts an Inertia visit and the preview is rendered by the same log/show page tree, the existing relationship state can remain visible until reconciliation completes, violating immediate forget-on-logout behavior.
Clear the mounted preview state together with the cache, or force the preview tree to unmount when logout begins.

@sulimanbenhalim You're right. I verified that SeriesStash.test.ts invokes vp test run with a configuration that includes tests/Unit/*.test.tsx. Both bun run test:unit and composer test reach that runner, so they include AuthorHover.test.tsx.
I withdraw the TSX test-discovery concern. No test-script change is needed. Thanks for correcting the description.

@coderabbitai about the outside diff Minor on user-preview.tsx:83-86 fair it's real

fixed in 7fd648b with preserveState={false} on the logout link so the page remounts and an open card goes with it tests/Unit/UserMenuLogout.test.tsx checks the prop and fails without it
Guard the follow-success cache write with the cache generation captured when the request starts.
The onChange handler at resources/js/components/user-preview.tsx:314-317 calls cache.set(previewUrl, next) without a generation check. fetchPreview checks the generation before its write, but this write path does not. A follow or unfollow request that starts before clearUserPreviews() can complete after it. Its router.visitonSuccess then calls onChange, which can write the prior account's relationship data back into the cleared cache.
Capture cacheGeneration before router.visit starts. In onSuccess, skip cache.set when the captured value no longer matches. Reading cacheGeneration inside the handler does not detect the clear, because the current value always matches itself.
A later hover for the same profile can then read the stale entry. It can show the previous account's relationship labels until a new successful request replaces it.

Minor · Clear previews before the destination page mounts. · delete-user.tsx:57-65
Clear previews before the destination page mounts.
Inertia installs log/show before the deletion form’s onSuccess callback runs. The destination can mount UserPreview, whose initial state reads the module cache. Therefore, a matching preview can display stale account data before clearUserPreviews() runs. Clearing the module cache afterward does not reset that component’s state.
Move the cache clear to onStart or another pre-transition lifecycle callback.

Minor · Clear previews before both banned-page transitions. · show.tsx:87-118
Clear previews before both banned-page transitions.
The banned-page logout control does not clear clearUserPreviews() on click. The account-deletion form clears previews only in onSuccess, after Inertia completes the visit. A cached preview can therefore remain available during the deletion transition and reach the next session.

In the banned-page transitions, clear cached user previews before navigation
begins: wire clearUserPreviews to the destroy Form’s onBefore callback and to
the logout Link’s onClick handler. Preserve the existing onSuccess behavior that
clears recent searches.
Add a test that runs the logout handler and checks the preview-cache clear.
The new test checks only the data-test and preserveState props of the logout link. It never calls the link's onClick, which is handleLogout. handleLogout calls clearUserPreviews(), so removing that call does not fail this test.
The AuthorHover tests call clearUserPreviews() directly. They do not invoke the logout path, so they cannot detect removal of the call in handleLogout.
Add an assertion that runs the logout handler and checks the cache clear. For example, invoke logout.props.onClick and assert that clearUserPreviews runs, or that a previously cached preview is no longer served. The mocks for cleanup, clearStashes, clearRecentSearches, and router.flushAll must allow the handler to run.

@sulimanbenhalim Thanks for reproducing this. I verified that the logout link now sets preserveState={false} and that tests/Unit/UserMenuLogout.test.tsx asserts this prop.
The page remount addresses the open card’s component state, which clearing the preview cache alone does not reset. This addresses the reported concern. I inspected the test but did not run it.
user-preview.tsx:314-317 fair
the logout visit doesn't cancel an async follow so its onSuccess can still land after clearUserPreviews() and put the old account's view back
fixed in df18e3d with unlessCleared(onChange) which captures cacheGeneration when the follow starts and drops the change if it moved
the capture lives outside the component on purpose since the React Compiler turned an inline const generation = cacheGeneration into cacheGeneration compared with itself
it skips setData too but the only clears are logout and deletion and both end on a freshly mounted page FollowState.test.tsx covers it and fails without the wrapper
and in the browser with the follow response held back until after logout the guest card now shows the loading state instead of Following and Follows you
delete-user.tsx:57-65 gonna leave it
the new page does start with the cached entry in state but nothing shows it until a card opens and scheduleOpen reads the cache again on open after a 450ms hover onSuccess runs right after the page swap so the cache is already empty by then
banned/show.tsx that's the one under limitations in the description
a banned account only sees that page so there's only something cached if they got banned mid session in the same tab
and that sign out link doesn't clear stashes or recent searches either
UserMenuLogout.test.tsx nitpick gonna leave it too clearStashes and clearRecentSearches are tested on their own and not through handleLogout so clearUserPreviews follows the same pattern
running handleLogout here would mean stubbing all three plus the document access in useMobileNavigation
Reject hover callbacks from an older cache generation.
A pending hover timer can survive logout. clearUserPreviews() does not cancel the timer, and the callback only checks triggerRef.current. If logout occurs before the 450 ms delay, the callback can start fetchPreview() after the cache generation changes. That request captures the new generation, so its authenticated relationship data can repopulate the cache for a later guest preview.

@sulimanbenhalim Thanks for the detailed explanation. I inspected the current code and tests.
Async follow race:unlessCleared(onChange) captures the generation before router.visit. After a clear, it blocks the preview update that writes both the cache and setData. FollowState.test.tsx exercises that callback order and asserts that no preview change occurs. This addresses the reported race. I did not inspect compiled output, so I cannot independently confirm the React Compiler transformation.
Account deletion: I withdraw the deletion-timing concern. scheduleOpen reads the cache again when the hover delay expires. The initial cached component state alone does not establish that stale relationship data becomes visible.
Banned page: Understood. This remains a documented cleanup gap for a ban applied mid-session in the same tab. I will not press for a change in this PR. Would you like a follow-up issue for that case?
Logout test: Understood. Keep the focused preserveState={false} assertion. I will not press for a test that invokes handleLogout.
@coderabbitai on the outside diff one about the hover timer in scheduleOpen gonna leave it
the inline const generation = cacheGeneration in that diff is what the React Compiler turned into cacheGeneration compared with itself last round so it'd be a no-op in the build
and moving the pointer off the name clears that timer so the realistic way to get one after the clear is the pointer landing on a name right after clicking log out which starts it after the bump where that check wouldn't catch it anyway
for it to matter the preview request also has to beat the logout on the server and the next open refetches

Capture the generation before scheduling the delayed preview. A logout click can occur during the 450 ms hover delay. clearUserPreviews() runs immediately, but unmount cleanup runs only after the logout navigation replaces the page. If the timer fires while logout is still in progress, the request can use the previous session and repopulate the cache with that account’s relationship data.

Review comment at @resources/js/components/user-preview.tsx at line 58:
Capture cacheGeneration before scheduling the delayed preview and have the timer
callback stop if that generation is stale; pass the captured generation through
the preview request so a logout cannot let an old-session response repopulate
the cache.

@sulimanbenhalim Understood. I will not press for the scheduleOpen change in this PR.
I confirmed that pointer leave cancels the pending open timer. Each subsequent open reads the cache again and starts a new preview request. A generation check captured after the cache clear would not catch the sequence you describe.
I have not verified the React Compiler output, so I cannot independently confirm that transformation.

Learning: Within repository "dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh", only for files matching one of ["resources/js/components/user-preview.tsx"]: When reviewing guest follow-state display in resources/js/components/user-preview.tsx, check whether the displayed follow value is gated by auth.user and whether the button label, variant, and accessible name use that gated value. If all use the guest-gated value, do not require shared follow-state clearing solely to prevent a guest from seeing Following, including after a late follow response. Assess preview-cache writes separately.
