Summary

Who to follow only changed when you pressed refresh, and you could only choose whether to show it at all. This branch lets you choose how many people it suggests (1, 3 or 5) and refreshes the suggestions on its own every minute. A switch in the block's … menu turns the automatic refresh off.

It also fixes two places where the block and Settings → Appearance disagreed:

  • Don't show again in the block left the setting on Show (now on a count) until a reload. This already happens on production.
  • After hiding from the block and visiting another page, choosing a count in the settings showed the hidden notice instead of the suggestions.

Changes

  • Choosing a count (d67b0923): Settings → Appearance offers Hide, 1, 3 or 5, kept in a who_to_follow_count cookie like who_to_follow.

  • Hidden state is shared: whether the block was hidden from its own menu now lives in shared state instead of per-component useState. The aside, the in-log block and the settings tabs read the same value.

    • The block stays mounted in persistent layouts, so the old per-component flag outlived navigation.
    • A visit that comes back without the suggestions clears it.
    • Choosing a count or Show clears it once that reload finishes. Inertia's reloads are async and run side by side, so a newer choice cancels the reload still waiting for its answer (5f88ceb7), and a suggestions refresh still waiting (ea2ca7dc). Only the latest settings reload reveals the block, and an older answer can't land last to bring back the old count or the old count's people.
  • Automatic refresh: every 60 seconds the block moves to the next round of suggestions, using the same reload as the refresh button. It's sent as an async background reload wrapped with backgroundPollOptions, so it never cancels a visit and gateway errors stay quiet. A tick is skipped when:

    • the tab is hidden,
    • the block is scrolled out of view or not displayed (only one of the aside and the in-log block is visible at a time),
    • the pointer is over it, or keyboard focus (:focus-visible) is in it,
    • a menu or preview inside it is open, or any dialog is open.

Focus that a click leaves behind doesn't pause it: after the menu closes, focus returns to the … button. The interval stops while the block is hidden or emptied, or while a dismissal or top-up is in flight. Any change to the suggestions restarts the minute.

  • Switch: … → Refresh automatically is a menuitemcheckbox that keeps the menu open, saved in a who_to_follow_auto_refresh cookie (excluded from encryption, shared as refreshesWhoToFollow). It's on by default.

Validation

Local, on head ea2ca7dc:

  • composer test:lint, composer test:types: pass

  • bun run test:unit: 209 passed

  • bunx vp test run tests/Unit/*.test.tsx: 735 passed. New cases cover:

    • the shared hidden state, and the settings tabs following the block (WhoToFollowTabs.test.tsx, with a useState mock that keeps state across renders),
    • a count picked after hiding, or picked again before the first reload loads (which cancels it), never showing the old count,
    • a count change cancelling a suggestions refresh still in flight,
    • the interval, pausing for hover, keyboard focus and out-of-view, not pausing for focus left by a click, and staying off when switched off, hidden or dismissing.

Each fix was checked by removing it: the corresponding test fails.

  • php -d memory_limit=-1 vendor/bin/pest --parallel --ci: 4,747 passed. This ran on the rebased branch before the last frontend-only amends; no PHP changed since.

  • composer test:type-coverage: 100%.

  • Not run locally: pest --coverage --exactly=100.0, because no coverage driver is installed. Left to CI.

In the running app (local seed data), I recorded each (settings | aside) state:

  • count 3 → hide → pick 1: 3 | 3 rows → Hide | hidden → 1 | hidden → 1 | 1 row
  • with a script picking 1, then 5 while the first reload was in flight (before the cancel fix; both reloads completed): Hide | hidden → 1 | hidden → 5 | hidden → 5 | 5 rows
  • automatic refresh fired after a minute with the pointer away (round 4 → 5), including with focus left on the … button

Layout shift (PerformanceObserver, layout-shift) was 0 for:

  • first load,
  • toggling the switch,
  • hiding from the block,
  • an automatic refresh cycle.

A count change moves the aside footer when the reload takes longer than the 500ms input window: 0.00013 for 5 → 1, and 0.0046 when five rows replace the hidden notice. This is the size change the user chose, and it also happens with the count control alone.

Device verification

No hardware or simulator coverage: the iOS Simulator wasn't available on this machine (no full Xcode install). The 390×844 captures use Chrome's mobile viewport emulation, which doesn't cover touch, the on-screen keyboard or safe areas. The change adds no text inputs or fixed controls.

Independent review

Reviewed by a separate Claude review agent with its own context, read-only, not the implementer. It got the task, the repository guidelines, the diff, the validation results and the captures above.

  • Round 1 (62e29928): CODE FAIL, VISUAL PASS. Two should-fix findings:

    • picking 1 or 5 after hiding made the selection jump through the old count,
    • the tabs test couldn't catch the tabs fix.

Three nits: refreshing out of view, history-restored props, and DropdownMenuCheckboxItem. All fixed, except the last two, which were accepted as reasoned.

  • Round 2 (35635cb5): CODE FAIL. One should-fix: a second pick that interrupts the first reload could still show the old count. Fixed by revealing only after the latest settings reload.

  • Round 3 (06ca80da on 4182b193): CODE PASS, VISUAL PASS, no findings.

  • CodeRabbit then found that overlapping settings reloads aren't ordered, because router.reload is always async, so an older answer could land last. Round 2's "interrupt" analysis was wrong on that point. Fixed in 5f88ceb7.

  • Round 4 (5f88ceb7 on 4182b193): CODE: PASS, VISUAL inapplicable (no markup changed). One nit (a refresh in flight during a count change), fixed in ea2ca7dc.

  • Round 5 (ea2ca7dc on 4182b193): CODE: PASS, VISUAL inapplicable. One nit, left as a limitation below. The reviewer's stated limits: it worked from the code and the installed Inertia 3.9.1 source, didn't run the tests or the app itself, and had no device results.

Limitations

  • No device or simulator testing (see above).
  • 100% line coverage is checked only in CI.
  • Back navigation: after turning the switch off and pressing Back, the restored page still has refreshesWhoToFollow: true until the next visit. That's the existing behaviour of cookie-backed props such as showsWhoToFollow and dimsLanes.
  • Footer shift: a count change shifts the aside footer once, as measured above.
  • Top-up race: a dismissal's top-up (an async reload of suggestedUsers) still in flight when the count changes can land afterwards with a list fetched under the old count (switching 1 → 5 can show 4 rows until the next refresh). It needs a dismissal and a count change within one round trip, and corrects itself. It isn't cancelled, because a cancelled top-up re-sends itself on the next visit.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Choose to show 1, 3, or 5 suggested people, or hide suggestions entirely.
    • Suggestions can refresh automatically every minute, with a setting to turn automatic refresh off.
    • Automatic refresh pauses when suggestions aren’t visible, are being interacted with, or the browser tab is in the background.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Suggestion counts and refresh preferences are retained when updating the displayed suggestions.
    • Single-person suggestions can include a vouched-for person when network prioritization is off.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the “Who to follow” guidance to explain suggestion counts and automatic refresh behavior.

Who to follow always showed three people. Settings → Appearance now offers
Hide, 1, 3 or 5, kept in a who_to_follow_count cookie next to who_to_follow,
so each browser keeps its own choice and nothing new is stored.

With a single slot, suggestions no longer go through every popular person
before anyone your follows follow.
Who to follow now moves on to the next people every minute, the way the
refresh button does, but not while the tab is in the background, the
pointer or keyboard focus is on the block, or a menu or preview is open.
A switch under … → Refresh automatically turns it off, kept in a
who_to_follow_auto_refresh cookie next to the other who to follow choices.

Hiding the block from its own menu now shows as Hide in Settings →
Appearance at once, and choosing a count there after visiting another page
brings the suggestions back instead of the hidden notice.

  • dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#1095 — The settings add choices for 1, 3, or 5 suggestions, matching the request for a longer suggested-follows list.

Merge Risk: Low · up to ea2ca

Older suggestions or an outdated refresh setting can reappear, and CI can fail intermittently. These bounded issues should be fixed or explicitly accepted.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to ea2ca

The new preferences remain bounded, and suggestion requests continue to use the signed-in user's identity. No introduced authorization bypass or expanded privilege was identified. Residual uncertainty concerns navigation recovery and the production workload from automatic refreshes.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed controls affect the current browser's suggestion preferences and repeated reads through the existing authenticated suggestion path. They do not supply another user's identity. Automatic refresh introduces recurring database work for eligible visible blocks; production capacity for that additional workload is not established by the supplied evidence.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The two new preference cookies are deliberately excluded from encryption and therefore remain client-controlled. The server constrains the count through an enum and independently obtains identity from the authenticated request. The base-to-head query change alters allocation, not the existing candidate exclusions or viewer-scoped commit visibility query.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Background refresh uses the existing polling wrapper, refuses another refresh while refreshing, and checks document visibility, viewport intersection, hover, focus, open controls, and dialogs before issuing a request. The interval is removed when eligibility changes or the effect is cleaned up. These controls limit incidental background activity but are not server-side abuse controls.

Inertia's reloads are async and run side by side, so picking a count and

an older response landing last put the earlier count back on the page

…t changes

A refresh still waiting for its answer when the count changed could land
after the settings reload and put back people fetched for the count from
before, so switching from 1 to 5 showed 4 until the next refresh. Changing
the settings now cancels that refresh too.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Cancel an in-flight background refresh when the count changes.

A background refresh uses the who_to_follow_count cookie that was set when the refresh started. If the user changes the count before that refresh completes, its response can arrive after the settings response. It then replaces suggestedUsers with a list built for the old count. The block slices that list to the new whoToFollowCount, so it can show fewer suggestions than the selected count until the next refresh.

reloadSettings cancels only the previous settings reload. Background refreshes do not store a cancel token, so they are never cancelled.

Track the background refresh's cancel token and cancel it in reloadSettings. Both settings reloads already return suggestedUsers, so cancelling the stale refresh does not remove suggestions.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Pin the UUIDv7 and date used by this allocation test.

User::factory() generates UUIDv7 IDs, and SuggestedUsersQuery seeds its randomizer from the user ID and current date. The valid UUIDv7 01a14ee2-0e00-7531-8bbc-a08b2712fce7 with date 2026-10-18 produces popular users on all first ten pages. The test then finds no vouched user and fails intermittently.

Use the deterministic fixture that exercises network suggestions while the base allocation still produces popular-only pages.

Suggested fix
 it('does not keep a single suggestion for the most followed until they run out', function (): void {
-    $user = User::factory()->create();
+    $this->travelTo('2021-12-09 12:00:00');

the who_to_follow_auto_refresh cookie in a useEffect so restored history state
reflects the saved preference. Read document.cookie only inside the effect to
keep server-side rendering safe, and use router.replaceProp when the values
differ.

single suggestion for the most followed until they run out” so its seeded
allocation is deterministic. Use the test’s time-travel helper and the suggested
UUIDv7 fixture when creating the user; keep the existing network-suggestion
setup and assertions unchanged.

Defer refreshes while a settings reload is pending.

Line 69 cancels a refresh that started before the settings reload. If a user changes the count and then clicks Suggest other people before that reload finishes, a new refresh can start. The refresh advances the round and can return first. The older settings response can then replace suggestedUsers with the previous round, undoing the visible refresh. The same ordering is possible on a timer tick. Gate or queue refreshes until settingsReloadInFlight finishes. Inertia permits these same-page async responses to apply in arrival order.
