feat: read self-reply threads through the API - #1343
When someone replies to their own commit, the web shows that earliest self-reply as the next commit of their thread, leaves it out of replies_count, and reads the whole thread through commits/{commit}/continuation. None of that was in the API: apps got a replies count one short, with no way to tell which reply continues a thread or to read the thread.
Changes
CommitResource sends continuation_id to signed requests wherever it was already loaded (commit pages, replies, logs, profiles, search, starred, pinned, reply previews): the id of that reply, or null. No new query.
GET /api/v1/commits/{commit}/replies takes the web's except parameter, so an app can leave the continuation out of the replies.
New GET /api/v1/commits/{commit}/continuation, with the same contract as the replies: signed only, 404 for a commit the user may not see, cursor pagination with meta.next_cursor and links.next, a cursor only working for the commit it was given for. It reuses the web's query (10 commits a page, stops at the first commit the user may not see). meta also has position, length and is_capped, so position + length is the size of the thread, and each commit has its continuation_id.
KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md lists reading these threads among what the signed API can do.
Requests and responses
Taken from a test run: octocat writes a thread of 12 commits as replies to themselves (<c1> to <c12>), and someone else replies to the first one. All requests are signed; commits are cut down to the fields that matter here.
GET /api/v1/commits/<c1>: the commit says which reply continues it, and replies_count leaves that reply out.
GET /api/v1/commits/<c1>/continuation?cursor=eyJ0aHJlYWRfaWQi…: the page after <c11>; the cursor holds <c1> and <c11>, so it only works for <c1>. position + length is still 12, the size of the thread.
New tests failed before each change and pass after it, including a query count test for the continuation endpoint.
pint --test, rector --dry-run, phpstan: pass. pest --type-coverage --min=100: 100%.
Full suite (pest --no-tia) on these commits rebased onto the current production (3c7e4bb0): 5211/5211. On the pushed base (aefd0fd5) it was 5160/5164, the 4 failures being the exact-JSON tests that test: cover API parity endpoints and update response assertions #1344 has since fixed. GitHub reports no conflict with production.
Not run: coverage (no pcov locally) and bun run test:unit (no frontend change).
Independent review
Separate agent, read-only, on 3c7e4bb0..8add8438: PASS. An earlier round failed on a 500 for an array cursor and a missing query count test; both are fixed and tested. The last commit answers CodeRabbit's comment on cursors.
Limitations
Cursors aren't signed: a hand-made one can name a commit from another thread, which then has to be visible to the user.

New Features
Signed API responses now include a continuation ID when a commit continues its author’s thread.
Added a paginated endpoint for browsing continuation threads, with thread position, length, and capped-status metadata.
Reply listings can exclude a specified reply by UUID.
Signed API access now includes threads where authors reply to their own commits.
Signed API responses now expose continuation IDs for commits with continuations. A new signed endpoint returns continuation threads with cursor pagination and thread metadata. Reply listings accept an optional UUID to exclude a reply.

Signed commit responses include continuation_id when the resource has that attribute. Reply listing accepts an optional UUID except value and passes it to pagination. Tests cover the field and exclusion behavior.
List continuation threads with cursor pagination app/Http/Requests/ListApiCommitContinuationRequest.php, routes/api.php, app/Http/Controllers/Api/CommitContinuationController.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/Api/CommitContinuationControllerTest.php
The signed route resolves and authorizes the continued commit. The controller returns cursor-paginated commits with continuation IDs and thread position, length, and capped-status metadata. Tests cover pagination, cursor handling, visibility, and unsigned requests.
Very long threads can report an inaccurate size. The change is mergeable with awareness of this limitation.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 8add8
The inspected paths retain signed-request authentication and commit-visibility controls. Editing a cursor can change which visible thread is paged, but no additional access to hidden commits or write authority was established.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The new entrypoint expands authenticated read reachability to continuation listings and metadata. Its inspected control flow introduces no commit-write operation or delegated authority.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A signed caller can pair a matching thread_id with another visible cursor anchor because ancestry is not checked. This changes the returned thread and metadata, but the anchor and selected descendants remain subject to visibility controls. Direct commit reads use the same visibility policy, so this path does not establish additional confidentiality or write access.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The endpoint is inside signed-request middleware and API throttling. Commit visibility permits an author's own commits or approved commits without a blocking relationship; descendant lists additionally exclude muted authors. Inaccessible route commits and cursor anchors receive not-found authorization responses.

feat: tell API clients which reply continues a thread
feat: read self-reply threads through the API
Oct 31, 2026
When an author replies to their own commit, the web shows their earliest
such reply as the next commit of their thread, not among the replies, and
replies_count already leaves it out. The API loaded that reply's id as
continuation_id on commit pages, reply lists and log, profile and search
cards, but CommitResource never sent it, so apps saw a replies count one
short with no way to tell why or to draw the thread.
CommitResource now sends continuation_id to signed requests wherever it
was loaded: the id of that reply, or null when there is none the user may
see. Ancestors and notifications don't load it, so they come without it, as
they do without starred. It adds no query.
The web asks for a commit's replies without the one it already shows
elsewhere, such as the continuation of the author's thread, which
replies_count leaves out too. The API had no way to do that, so an app
showing a thread got its continuation twice.
The replies endpoint now takes the same except parameter as the web: the
id of a reply to leave out.
…gh the API
The web reads such a thread with commits/{commit}/continuation, but the
API had no equivalent: an app had to fetch the thread one commit at a
time, with no way to show where a commit stands in it.
GET /api/v1/commits/{commit}/continuation lists the commits that follow
a commit in its author's thread, with the same contract as its replies:
signed requests only, not found for a commit the user may not see, and
cursor pagination with meta.next_cursor and links.next. The cursor
continues from the last commit of a page, which the user must still see.
It reuses the web's query, so the thread stops at the first commit the
user may not see and comes 10 commits a page. meta also has position,
the place of the commit a page continues from, length, how many commits
follow it (counted up to 100, as on the web), and is_capped, so
position + length is the size of the thread. Each commit says which one
continues it, which explains its replies_count.

A cursor only held the commit a page continues from, so a cursor from
one thread sent to the continuation of another commit listed the first
thread under the second one's URL. Nothing leaked, since the user had to
see that commit, but the commit in the URL no longer scoped the results,
unlike the replies.
Cursors now also hold the commit in the URL as thread_id, and a cursor
given for another commit is not found, like one on a commit the user
may not see.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Validate that the cursor commit remains in the thread.
If an earlier commit is deleted between pages, its replies remain, but the route commit’s continuation stops at the deleted commit. This call still starts from the visible cursor commit and returns later replies as part of the original thread. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Check that the cursor commit remains reachable through the route commit’s visible continuation chain before querying it.
