Fixes #446

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved reliability when BLE attribute values are read or updated concurrently.
    • BLE stack initialization now fails if synchronization setup cannot be completed.
    • BLE notifications update the stored characteristic value only after the notification data is assembled and validated.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified that getAttVal() returns a reference.

📝 Walkthrough

Arr, NimBLEAttValue now uses an NPL mutex to guard value operations and GATT reads. Device initialization manages the lock lifecycle. Notification payloads are assembled locally and stored only after successful validation.

Changes: Attribute Value Synchronization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Lock definition and lifecycle
src/NimBLEAttValue.h, src/NimBLEAttValue.cpp, src/NimBLEDevice.cpp
Arr, NimBLEAttValue::Lock uses an NPL mutex and initialization state. Device initialization initializes the lock and returns false if initialization fails. When deinit(clearAll) receives true, it deinitializes the lock.
Guarded value operations and reads
src/NimBLEAttValue.cpp, src/NimBLEAttValue.h, src/NimBLEServer.cpp, src/NimBLELocalValueAttribute.h
Arr, value mutations, reads, conversions, and comparisons acquire the lock. The GATT read path uses it around os_mbuf_append. Self-append copies the bytes before appending. Pointer getter documentation describes concurrent invalidation, and getAttVal() documentation now describes a reference.
Notification payload assembly
src/NimBLEClient.cpp
Arr, notification data is assembled in a local NimBLEAttValue. After successful assembly and length validation, the local value replaces the stored characteristic value and supplies the callback data.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Arrr, issue #446 requires safe concurrent setValue(), append(), and deepCopy(). setValue() acquires NimBLEAttValue::Lock and then calls append(), which acquires the same mutex again. The mutex is not shown as recursive, so an initialized lock can self-deadlock. If the lock is not initialized, these operations remain unprotected. deepCopy() now keeps sizing and copying under the lock, but the setValue() path remains unusable. No automated regression test evidence is reported.

Resolution

Arrr, make setValue() call an unlocked append helper while it holds the lock, or otherwise acquire the mutex only once. Apply the same rule to other nested lock paths such as operator+=. Add automated tests for concurrent setValue() and append() operations and for deepCopy() during updates.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Arrr, the NimBLEAttValue lock lifecycle and the NimBLEServer and NimBLEClient changes support issue #446. The NimBLEDevice::onSync() log correction, the NimBLEDevice::init() log-text change, and the NimBLELocalValueAttribute.h return-documentation correction have no demonstrated connection to the mutex or race fix.

Resolution

Arrr, remove the unrelated log and documentation changes, or move them to a separate change with its own scope.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Keep the shared NimBLEAttValue mutex alive during shutdown, arrr.

nimble_port_stop() does not join the FreeRTOS host task. The host task can still execute NimBLEServer::handleGattEvent() while deinit(true) deletes the semaphore through NimBLEAttValue::Lock::deinit(). Application tasks can also hold or await this public shared lock. Deleting an active FreeRTOS mutex causes invalid synchronization.

Remove this teardown. Lock::init() can reuse the initialized static mutex after reinitialization.

Handle deepCopy failure before invoking the callback, matey.

pChr->m_value = value can fail during deepCopy when realloc cannot grow the stored buffer. The copy assignment does not report that failure. The handler can then call the callback with the new local value and return 0 while pChr->m_value still contains the old value. Make the copy report failure, skip the callback, and return an error.
