Bob selection-translation plugin: select any text and have a large language model "explain it in plain, simple words."
This plugin targets the free community edition of Bob and works with any OpenAI-compatible or Anthropic-compatible API — cloud services (OpenAI / DeepSeek / Zhipu, etc.) or local models (Ollama / LM Studio / various proxy gateways).
- Select any text and press option + d (the selection-translation hotkey) to have an LLM explain it
- Custom prompt: defaults to "Explain the following in plain, simple words: $text", freely editable
- Custom API: both OpenAI-compatible (
/chat/completions) and Anthropic-compatible (/messages) formats - Streaming-compatible: always requests in streaming (SSE) mode, supporting local services that only provide streaming output
- Connection test: translate the word
test(or测试) to verify your configuration
- Download the latest
bobplugin-explain-vX.X.X.bobpluginfile from Releases - Double-click the file and Bob installs it automatically
- Open Bob Preferences → Services → Text Translation and find "解释一下"
Requires Bob free community edition 0.5.0 or later.
Fill in the fields under Bob Preferences → Services → Text Translation → 解释一下 → Settings:

Type test (or 测试) in any input box, select it, and press option + d. The plugin sends a test request and shows:

On failure it shows the specific error (network error / status code / API error) to help troubleshooting.
- Default prompt: select a piece of code or a term → option + d → get a plain-language explanation
- Try different prompts in the "User prompt" field:
