Icepdf is a pure Java PDF document rendering and viewing solution. Icepdf can parse, render and annotate documents based on the latest PDF standards and can do so as fast or faster than some native libraries.
The library began in Italy under the name pdfGo. At the time, ICEbrowser, a popular embedded web browser with a plug-in API, needed a way to view PDF documents. One acquisition later, pdfGo became ICEpdf, and version 1.0.0 was released a few months afterward, in 2004. The closed-source version slowly gained adoption, and in 2009 a large portion of the library was open sourced, with a small community growing around it.
Roughly fifteen years later, things changed again. The library found a new home on GitHub as simply icepdf (all lowercase). It has evolved over the years, but its purpose remains the same: to provide a pure Java solution for rendering, viewing, and annotating PDF documents.
