feat(scripts): storage scenarios against the real core - #8426
Adds scripts/storage-scenarios/: a headless openhuman-core serve per driver, each with its own HOME. It writes data through the same JSON-RPC methods the app calls, then checks the data two ways: read back over RPC, and read straight from disk (SQLite opened read-only with node:sqlite, or the file driver's tree).
Shape and rules come from scripts/memory-scenarios/, whose core rig it reuses. Output is report.md, findings.json, checks.json and results.json, plus scrubbed logs under target/storage-scenarios/<run-id>/. Every failed check is a finding for a person; nothing is fixed during a run.
The README has a "How storage works" section written from the code: URL resolution, the six ports, scopes, secrets, legacy import and layout v2.
Scripts, fixtures and README only. No product code changes.
Problem
Nothing showed end to end how tinystoragedrivers behaves inside OpenHuman, or whether data sent through the real core lands where the docs say, in the right scope, without plaintext secrets, and survives restarts, crashes, imports and migrations.
Solution
No account, network or chat model is needed: every record is written by an RPC. Fixtures are fictional.
still authenticated by api-key, also after a restart; key not in plaintext
Every absence check has a positive control first: the grep must find a stored marker, a user must see their own records, and a fresh write must be listed.
Deviations from the original brief, from reading the code:
Blobs: no RPC creates an artifact, so blobs are driven through voice notes.
KV: not drivable without a bound memory engine.
Scopes: agent/module principal scopes and SaaS tenants are not driven. A module scope needs an agent turn or a declared storage grant, and none exists; SaaS needs server mode.
flows/cron: the records are module-owned but stored in the acting scope (flows/catalog_storage.rs:1-7, cron/documents_port.rs:80), so that is what is asserted.
Run results (cuttlefish)
These are from a real run on cuttlefish of node scripts/storage-scenarios/run.mjs, all drivers, harness at 34a3808, with openhuman-core built from that tree (current main credential code). Exit 0, 0 crashed scenarios, 0 outbound requests: api_url points at a closed loopback port and the auto-updater is off.

Session stored in the pre-login database (high).set_credential stores the app-session profile before the per-user storage rebind. The session lands in users/local/storage.db, and the signed-in user's own database reads it as absent: auth_get_session_token returns null (A/B1-secret-roundtrip). Fixed in fix(credentials): keep sessions and the API key on per-user storage #8428.
The file: driver cannot store thread messages (medium). Every threads_message_append on OPENHUMAN_STORAGE_URL=file:<dir> fails with unsupported capability validated_batch: conversation append requires checked documents and conditional streams (tinyagents-session). At tsd 29471a1 the file document driver does not declare ValidatedBatch (memory, sqlite and mongodb do), and OpenHuman's storage docs list file: with no such limit. The same root cause makes file B2 fail its in-flight-window guard, since no append is ever acknowledged. The owner is the tsd file driver or the docs.
Observations (notes in the report):
With an explicit storage URL, Clear App Data removes the user folder only; records on that backend survive, as designed.
A legacy flow-schedule cron job is re-keyed flow:<flow id> by tinyflows on import, also as designed.
Earlier runs also reached the real backend once, with the run's fictional session token, before api_url was pinned. That is fixed here; no real credential was involved.
Submission Checklist

Diff coverage ≥ 80%: N/A: scripts only, no Rust or app code.
Coverage matrix updated: N/A: no product feature change.
All affected feature IDs listed: N/A.
No new external network dependencies introduced.
Manual smoke checklist: N/A: no release-cut surface.
Linked issue: N/A: user-requested harness, no filed issue.
Impact
None at runtime: a developer script under scripts/ plus one self-test.
Added automated checks for storage discovery, read-only access, data integrity, and matching content in binary files.
Added scenarios covering persistence, user data separation, legacy migration, clearing app data, credential retention after sign-out, and concurrent updates.
Checks also cover restart behavior, storage isolation, and migration outcomes across SQLite, file, and memory storage.
Documentation
Added guidance for running storage scenarios, interpreting reports, and understanding their coverage and results.
Add scripts/storage-scenarios/, modelled on memory-scenarios: a headless
openhuman-core with its own HOME, driven over JSON-RPC with no account and
no chat model, checked over RPC and on disk (SQLite opened read-only with
node:sqlite). Scenarios: write and read back per port, restart and
kill -9 durability, on-disk scopes and no plaintext secrets, two-user
isolation, legacy v1 import, layout v2 migration (with and without a
master key), Clear App Data, the file and memory drivers, compare-and-swap
and append races, and sign-out keeping the API key.
Every failed check is a finding; nothing is fixed during a run. The
README explains how storage works, from the code.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
This change adds utilities and scenarios that check SQLite, file, and memory storage behavior. It adds legacy-profile checks, a scenario runner that records results, and documentation for running and grading the checks.

The first cuttlefish run showed the harness reading the wrong shapes:
cron_list answers a bare array, the threads domain answers {data, meta},
and a flow decision row names the tool, not the flow. Read lists through
one helper that handles both envelopes, and check the decision by a
per-run tool name.
Also: the grep control uses the cron prompt (stored on every driver);
the file driver's blob is found by its bytes; E compares only the seeded
originals, decodes the hex-encoded marker ids and keeps the idempotency
check to imported collections; J gets a positive control before the
sign-out; StorageDb returns plain row objects; debug logs for the
credential and secret paths; two unused imports dropped.

From the second cuttlefish run: the import marker domain is `approval`,
and a finished import is the `done/` entry (the `claim/` one is its
lease); a legacy flow-schedule cron job is keyed `flow:<flow id>` by
tinyflows (schedule/jobs.rs flow_job_id), shell and agent jobs keep
their ids. A thread read-back is skipped when no append was accepted, so
one refused write is one finding. C notes which database holds which
secret. The run directory is resolved with realpath, because the secrets
backend refuses a directory with a symlinked ancestor.
- Stop the main core (and E's) in a finally, so a failed boot leaves no
core running.
- Pin api_url to a closed loopback port in every config the run writes:
notification triage and the fictional API key's first use can never
reach a backend or a model.
- Register each user's provider token for log scrubbing.
- Run a scenario's prerequisites with it (B, C, H, I need A; F needs E),
so a selective --only still has the records it checks.
- E-idempotent compares the imported collections of both boots, so a
collection the second boot empties is caught.
- H-stream-gone requires a successful read before "gone" counts.

The validated run showed the only outbound attempt left: the auto-updater
asking api.github.com for the latest release. Every rig now starts its core
with OPENHUMAN_AUTO_UPDATE_ENABLED=false, so a run is fully offline.
… crash window
- An --only prefix that matches no scenario, or a selection that runs on
none of the chosen drivers, is refused before any core starts; a driver
with none of the selected scenarios is skipped and the report says so.
- B2 records a failed in-flight-window check, and does not kill the core,
when fewer than 40 appends were acknowledged: the loss and tear checks
would otherwise pass on nothing.
