loaf

building a little browser for your mac.
loaf

loaf is a native Mac browser i’m designing and building with Swift and WebKit.

i’m owen van vooren, a designer and developer from Minnesota. i work on apps, websites, and interfaces. loaf is an exploration of how a browser can work when its interface is treated as a system of its own, rather than a collection of familiar browser controls.

the interface is built around a few ideas: tabs, profiles, and media sit in the sidebar; downloads, history, and favorites are in the tray; and the wonderbar handles addresses and search. there’s also split view, a customizable start page, and experimental Chrome extension support.

browsing history stays on your Mac. passwords stay in Keychain. loaf doesn’t collect analytics or telemetry. optional online features contact their providers; the privacy policy explains what gets sent and when.

loaf is still in development, with no public build yet. it’ll be free to use, and the source code will be available to review at release. the proprietary license allows private builds for review and testing. it isn’t open source.
