When macOS audio buffers are lost, the AAC writer can pack the remaining samples together despite their timestamps. Later speech then plays early. A controlled reproduction using current main's actual append function moved a tone from 0.70 s to 0.50 s after a 200 ms loss; an encoder burst also dropped buffers without deliberate omission.

This keeps a bounded queue for brief encoder stalls (two seconds, 4 MiB and 256 buffers per writer). If sustained overload exceeds those limits, missing time is written as silence, including leading gaps and the final tail. Overlaps are trimmed using the source PCM format, each retimed entry describes one audio frame, and finalization reports a failure if queued audio cannot drain. Gap generation is incremental, yields between successful passes, and uses a five-second inactivity timeout. Queued audio is trimmed to the final media time.

The existing capture clock, video path and inline source-selection policy remain in place. This is a focused alternative to the wider recorder changes in #1088; it does not claim to resolve every cause of drift or reproduce the exact REAPER environment in #1120.

Validation:

  • Full unit suite: 1,639 passed. The new compiled Swift tests use real AAC output and verify gaps, brief stalls, queue-overflow recovery, leading/trailing loss, duplicate/partial overlaps, mono 24 kHz and interleaved PCM. They compare the later tone against a control rather than assuming container duration proves sync.
  • The same production-function reproduction now keeps the tone at 0.70 s and the decoded track at approximately one second with and without the 200 ms loss.
  • Typecheck, targeted lint, production renderer/Electron build and Electron main smoke passed. Both arm64 and x86_64 native helpers compiled for macOS 14.
  • Independent diff review caught an unbounded silence-generation loop; generation is now bounded per pass. CodeRabbit subsequently identified that an absolute deadline could fail while encoding was progressing: a failing-before regression now verifies progress resets the inactivity timeout, while blocked writers still fail. A partial-buffer cutoff check verifies the final media boundary.

Review: CodeRabbit reviewed head bb14634f; its timeout defect is fixed and marked addressed. Its remaining trivial suggestion is a committed callback/append-helper stall test: the deterministic regressions currently compile the production queue directly, while recorder integration is covered by the separate production-wrapper probe and live smoke. That additional regression coverage is deferred; no further production defect was identified.

Live smoke: 35 seconds of fixed-area capture with system-audio beeps, including a three-second pause/resume, stopped successfully. The MP4 has 34.991667 s video and 34.991125 s audio; decoded inline/sidecar audio both contain the test signal. This is a short capture smoke, not a long-duration stress pass. Window-target smoke was interrupted by ScreenCaptureKit reporting the test window unavailable; no claim of passing that case or reproducing REAPER. No USB/Bluetooth microphone hardware test, release or deployment is included.

📝 Walkthrough

The recorder now queues audio samples per writer input and drains them when the writer is ready. Queues validate and bound input, handle timestamp gaps and overlaps, and report errors during finalization. A macOS integration test exercises queue behavior with AAC output.

Changes: Audio sample queue

Layer / File(s) Summary
Queue behavior and validation
electron/native/ScreenCaptureKitRecorder.swift, electron/native/AudioSampleQueue.test.ts
AudioSampleQueue validates PCM samples, bounds queued data, trims overlaps, and inserts silence for timestamp gaps. The macOS integration probe exercises queue behavior and AAC output.
Recorder audio enqueueing
electron/native/ScreenCaptureKitRecorder.swift
The recorder creates a queue for each writer input. System audio and microphone samples are enqueued without requiring the input to be ready at the call site.
Queue finalization and error reporting
electron/native/ScreenCaptureKitRecorder.swift
Finalization drains queues to the resolved capture end time, logs dropped buffers and inserted silence, and returns a queue error if writer finalization succeeds.

The queue stall test does not cover audio dropped before it reaches the queue. This is a bounded coverage gap, not a demonstrated recording failure.

Exercise the production audio path in the stall test.

The stall scenario constructs AudioSampleQueue directly. It does not call ScreenCaptureKitRecorder.stream(_:didOutputSampleBuffer:of:) or appendAudioSampleBuffer. A regression that drops audio before it reaches the queue can therefore pass this test while the recorder loses speech during encoder backpressure. Add one stall case through the production callback or append helper. Keep the direct queue cases for queue-specific behavior.
