What does this PR do?

Adds experimental support for standalone watchOS SwiftPM apps. Projects can opt
in with platform: watchos or xtool new --platform watchos; the packer selects
Watch SDKs, deployment targets, product directories, and Watch-only bundle metadata.
Existing projects retain the iOS default.

  • Extract and register optional WatchOS/WatchSimulator SDKs, including device
arm64_32/arm64 and simulator arm64/x86_64 triples. Bump the SDK epoch so existing
normal installations rebuild their SDK view; slim installations need reinstalling.
  • Add xtool dev sign-watch for explicit Watch-device provisioning and signing
using the existing authentication workflow. Watch profiles select registered
Apple Watches. The command refuses automatic certificate revocation, and exits
non-zero when it does, so a sign-watch && install chain cannot carry on and
    stream an unsigned bundle.
  • Add a minimal Watch example, an interactive Watch Probe, tests, and a separate
Python deployment prototype using the paired USB iPhone's companion proxy and
    com.apple.streaming_zip_conduit.
  • Document SDK setup, architecture selection, Watch trust, Developer Mode,
signing, installation, profile renewal, troubleshooting, and remaining limits.
Keep Watch examples out of the iPhone simulator example harness.

On the tested Ultra 2 with watchOS 27.0.1, the installer rejects arm64_32 and
requires arm64. It also rejects combining WKWatchOnly with
WKRunsIndependentlyOfCompanionApp; standalone bundles emit only WKWatchOnly.

This is a draft for design and implementation review. Physical xtool dev run,
integrated build --sign/--ipa, automatic launch/debugging, and Watch Xcode
project generation remain unsupported. The Python helper is an experimental
validation tool, not integrated Swift CLI deployment. It requires exactly one
Watch in the phone's companion registry.

A search of open and closed upstream PR titles, bodies, and comments for Watch
support found no related PR before this submission.

The follow-up commit c46cd6a fixes three findings from a review of the initial
push. The opt-in watchOS smoke test asserted an error string the CLI never emits,
so it could not pass when enabled. xtool dev sign-watch printed its refusal to
revoke a certificate and still exited 0, which let a sign-watch && install chain
continue with an unsigned bundle; it now signs through
IntegratedInstaller.signInPlace with the delegate the other commands already use,
with revocation disabled rather than prompted, and a genuine cancellation still
exits 0. The WatchOS page linked a blob/main path that does not exist until merge,
and now names the file as inline code, as the other DocC pages do.

How was it tested?

Validation on Windows + Ubuntu WSL with Swift 6.4.1 and the watchOS 27 SDK. The
build, tests, lint, and docs below were re-run on the current head c46cd6a; the
hardware results are from the initial push 6efdb80, whose on-device behaviour the
follow-up commit does not change:

  • Clean host build and all 21 Swift tests passed using SwiftPM's native
backend with libimobiledevice/native dependencies configured through pkg-config.
The twenty-first covers the refusal path added in c46cd6a.
  • make lint: 0 violations in 141 files. Watch Probe also passed its own lint.
  • make docs passed. An explicit DocC conversion with --warnings-as-errors
passed and generated the linked WatchOS page.
  • The exact PR CLI built WatchProbe for arm64, DemoWatch for arm64_32, and the
existing iOS DemoSimple regression example. Earlier validation also built an
x86_64 Watch simulator bundle and verified binary architectures/platforms.
  • 4 Python helper tests passed: reject iPhone packages and ambiguous IPA
payloads, refuse multiple-Watch selection, and clean up after disconnect.
  • The final helper connected to the trusted Watch, exported private device info,
and successfully installed both a signed IPA and a signed .app; Watch app
    registry lookup verified installation.
  • A free Apple Account provisioned the Ultra 2. Provisioning-profile CMS
verification, matching device/bundle checks, and executable CodeDirectory page
hashes passed. No paid membership or Mac was used.
  • The device owner confirmed Watch Probe launches and responds; its foreground
HTTPS request to Apple's small test page returned HTTP 200. An earlier
example.com request timed out with error -1001.

Initial trust and Developer Mode were exercised manually during hardware bring-up.
The final helper's already-trusted path was tested; first-time pairing through
the final wrapper still needs another-device validation. No macOS build,
simulator execution, broader Watch hardware coverage, asset-catalog integration,
or third-party-framework/extension deployment testing was performed.

No SDKs, signed device bundles, provisioning profiles, pairing records, device
identifiers, or private credentials are included in the PR. The ignored .watchos
directory stores local device state; free-account profiles need renewal after
seven days.

📝 Walkthrough

This PR adds experimental watchOS support. It adds a platform model, watchOS SDK handling, platform-aware commands, a sign-watch command, a Python deployment helper, example apps, tests, and documentation. Physical dev run, build --sign, and build --ipa fail explicitly for watchOS.

Changes: watchOS support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Platform model and packing
Sources/PackLib/*
AppPlatform selects triples, SDK names, minimum versions, and plist values. The schema, build settings, planner, and packer use the platform. XcodePacker rejects watchOS.
SDK and command integration
Sources/XToolSupport/SDKBuilder.swift, Sources/XToolSupport/Dev*Command.swift, Sources/XToolSupport/LSPConfig.swift, Sources/XToolSupport/NewCommand.swift
The SDK builder handles Watch platforms. Commands derive defaults from the schema platform. new accepts a platform option. Unsupported watchOS flows throw errors.
Watch signing flow
Sources/XKit/*, Sources/XToolSupport/DevWatchSignCommand.swift, Sources/XToolSupport/XToolInstallerDelegate.swift
Signing carries a platform. Profile fetching filters devices by platform. sign-watch signs an app in place without allowing revocation.
Python Watch deployment helper
tools/watchos/*, .gitignore
The helper connects to a Watch through a paired iPhone and installs an app. The directory includes tests, a pinned requirement, and a README.
Examples, tests, and docs
Examples/*, Tests/XToolTests/Watch*, integration-tests/suite/smoke.bats, Documentation/*, README.md
Adds the DemoWatch and WatchProbe examples. test.sh skips DemoWatch. Adds unit and smoke tests and watchOS documentation.

Three findings from a source review of the watchOS branch.

sign-watch refused certificate revocation but still exited 0: its
confirmRevocation closure returned false, the fetch operation turned that
into CancellationError, and the root command prints "Cancelled." and exits
successfully on CancellationError. A shell chain such as
`xtool dev sign-watch ... && watch_device.py --install ...` therefore
streamed an unsigned bundle to the Watch after saying it had stopped.

The command now goes through IntegratedInstaller.signInPlace, which gains a
`platform:` parameter (default .iOS), so it shares the staged delegate the
other signing commands use. XToolInstallerDelegate takes
`allowsRevocation:`; with it false the delegate lists the certificates,
declines without prompting and records that it did. sign-watch then rethrows
the resulting CancellationError as a Console.Error that names
`xtool dev build --sign` as the interactive way to replace the certificate.
A real Ctrl-C still surfaces as "Cancelled." with exit 0. The refusal itself
is deliberate and unchanged: revoking a free account's development
certificate breaks apps already installed from it on other devices.

The watchOS smoke test asserted "watchOS signing and distribution packaging
are not supported yet", which the CLI never prints; the guard says "IPA
packaging". It now asserts a fragment of the real message. The
XTL_TEST_WATCHOS gate stays; dropping it depends on the integration runner
carrying the Watch SDK.

WatchOS.md linked tools/watchos/README.md on main, where it does not exist
until this branch merges, so the Netlify preview showed a dead link. The
other DocC pages name in-repo files as inline code, and this one now does
too.

Fix simulator detection in sdkName.

triple.contains("simulator") can match any substring. It is consistent with the documented triples, so this is low risk. The check does not use the same token-based logic as Packer.cfBundleSupportedPlatforms, which uses components.contains("simulator"). Use one shared helper to avoid divergence.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Fix triple parsing for AppPlatform.init(triple:).

The initializer reads components[2] after splitting on -. A triple with a vendor-less form, such as arm64-watchos, or a triple with a sub-architecture and no vendor, resolves to .iOS. A mismatched triple then builds an iOS plan for a watchOS SDK. Packer.cfBundleSupportedPlatforms locates the OS after the apple component instead. The two parsers can disagree. Use one shared parser that finds the OS after apple, or check any component for the watchos prefix.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Cleanup on BaseException can mask the original error.

In __aenter__, the except BaseException block awaits self.__aexit__. If a close call raises, for example ConnectionError or TimeoutError, that exception replaces the original setup error. The user then sees the cleanup failure instead of the real cause, such as "Expected exactly one paired Watch". The __aexit__ method does not suppress close errors. It only guarantees that later cleanup steps still run.

Suppress cleanup errors during setup failure, so the original exception propagates.
