Summary

Content "adds a HEMA gambeson"

Purpose of change

Adding new armor
Also this would exist irl (very rarely)

Describe the solution

Adds 1 new item, a hema gambeson. It is an EXTREMELY low spawn rate - as you would expect irl.
its modeled after the spes ap light 350n https://www.woodenswords.com/product_p/spes-j-lt.html

weight, material thicknesses are based on the online specification, as well as irl experience with the object.
Balance wise it is less protective then similar survivor crafted gambesons, although lighter / less warm (modern materials, foam padding)

Google estimates 15,000 to 35,000 active hema practitioners in the US, which is enough for this item to justify a VERY low spawn chance / existence IMO.

Describe alternatives you've considered

n/a really

may add some more items in this vein if and when this gets merged

Testing

spawned the item in game

Spell checker encountered unrecognized words in the in-game text added in this pull request. See below for details.

  • "Hema gambeson"
  • "Hema gambesons"

This alert is automatically generated. You can simply disregard if this is inaccurate, or (optionally) you can also add the new words to tools/spell_checker/dictionary.txt so they will not trigger an alert next time.

Hints for adding a new word to the dictionary
  • If the word is normally in all lowercase, such as the noun word or the verb does, add it in its lower-case form; if the word is a proper noun, such as the surname George, add it in its initial-caps form; if the word is an acronym or has special letter case, such as the acronym CDDA or the unit mW, add it by preserving the case of all the letters. A word in the dictionary will also match its initial-caps form (if the word is in all lowercase) and all-uppercase form, so a word should be added to the dictionary in its normal letter case even if used in a different letter case in a sentence.
  • For a word to be added to the dictionary, it should either be a real, properly-spelled modern American English word, a foreign loan word (including romanized foreign names), or a foreign or made-up word that is used consistently and commonly enough in the game. Intentional misspelling (including eye dialect) of a word should not be added unless it has become a common terminology in the game, because while someone may have a legitimate use for it, another person may spell it that way accidentally.

The link you gave seems to give a 404 error. Looking at the product you mention, is there any particular reason why nearly every HEMA practitioner in the US would be using something like that as opposed to something like the gambesons that already exist in game that I've seen more of?

Better yet, is this common enough to model? The source for the 15-35k seems to just be AI, and the actual estimates are close to that, but they seem to be pretty loose estimates by the community based on an assumption that may or may not be true. Even assuming the high end, and completely even distribution across the US to the state we model, that's only around 1 in 10,000 houses that should have one (if every HEMA practitioner at the high end estimate owns soft armor of some kind). Maybe 1 in 100-200 dojos as a stand-in for somewhere that practices an armed martial art where the extra protection is needed.

Yea its definitely not common. I set it as a spawn rate of 1 in just the hobbies item group (for context fencing gear has around 5 or so 8 priorities items in that spawn group) so I think thats justified based on that. idk ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Yea, there are other models people could buy - I know at my local club this one or others with foam padded are the most common, but thats just subjective of course

I guess compared to our existing gambesons it tells a different story - if you find this in a basement or mansion or whatever its immediately clear why its there

also just personally - I think its neat to have some rare niche side grades to craftable items

The url for the source seems to be broken? Specifically it seems it should be .htm instead of .html.
