Goal

Closes AND-1658

A partial channel update (for example group or touched_at) sends channel.updated only to connections that watch the channel. Grouped lists went stale for the other channels until the next grouped query. The backend now sends notification.channel_partial_updated to members who are not watching, and this handles it.

Implementation

  • New public NotificationChannelPartialUpdatedEvent and EventType.NOTIFICATION_CHANNEL_PARTIAL_UPDATED.
  • The event's channel has only basic fields and the custom data. It is parsed like a full channel, because v1 connections get the custom fields at the top level of channel.
  • mergePartialUpdate applies only the fields the event carries. Members, reads, config and lastMessageAt stay local. The custom data replaces the custom part of extraData, so a removed group is removed locally too.
  • The merge is used in channel state, offline storage (a channel that is not stored is never inserted) and the grouped unread counts.
  • GroupAwareChatEventHandler removes a listed channel that no longer matches its tab, and watches a channel that now matches.
  • A channel with no local copy is matched on its group only. Its last activity is unknown, so the list applies the cutoff after the watch.
  • A grouped list does not add a watched channel that is hidden, for example after the user unmatched.
  • A partial update watches a channel with no local copy only when the group has no more pages, or when its known sort key places it within the loaded channels. The event has no last_message_at, so a channel with a recent message but an old touched_at waits for the next page or query.
  • The ChannelTransformer is applied to the event's channel, so the fields it carries replace local values that were transformed too.
  • Relative cutoffs that are not a positive number of days (-7d, now-0d) no longer become a local cutoff, as on develop (Support per-group filters and filtered unread badges in grouped lists #6834).

Testing

Needs an app with grouped tabs, one with a query_timestamp filter.

  1. Load the tabs. From the server, change the group of a channel that is loaded in one tab. It moves to the other tab without a new grouped query.
  2. Change the group of a channel that is not loaded (beyond the first page) to a tab you have open. It is watched and appears in that tab.
  3. Remove the group of a loaded channel. It leaves its tab.
  4. Hide a channel for the current user, then change its group from the server. It does not come back.

Validation that ran: ./gradlew spotlessApply detekt apiDump, then spotlessCheck apiCheck testDebugUnitTest (all modules), plus mutation checks on the merge in routing, the group-only match and the hidden check.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for notification.channel_partial_updated events, including updates to channel details and grouped unread counts.
    • Partial updates are merged into existing channel data without replacing unrelated local fields. Grouped channel lists now reflect changes in group membership and filters, and hidden channels are not added to grouped queries.

…ho are not watching

Parse notification.channel_partial_updated into NotificationChannelPartialUpdatedEvent. The event carries a slim channel, so it is merged into the local channel (state, offline storage and grouped unread counts) instead of replacing it. Grouped lists remove a channel that no longer matches its tab and watch a channel that now matches.
…loaded channels by group only

v1 WebSocket connections receive the custom fields at the top level of the channel, so the slim channel is parsed like a full channel. A channel with no local copy is matched on its group only, since its last activity is unknown, and the list applies the cutoff after the watch. Grouped lists skip a watched channel that is hidden.

📝 Walkthrough

The client now parses and maps notification.channel_partial_updated events into a public event. State handlers merge partial channel fields with existing channel data and update offline storage and grouped unread counts. Grouped query handling evaluates updated channels against group, filter, membership, and hidden status. Watch results for grouped queries are not added when the returned channel is hidden.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 204e7

Partial channel updates can leave grouped unread counts in an intermediate group. They can also overwrite app-transformed channel fields with raw values, and channels can land in the wrong grouped tab. Resolve or explicitly accept these issues before merging.

A cutoff like -7d or now-0d is rejected by the backend. It no longer becomes a local cutoff in the future or at the current time, so the server decides.
…aded channels

A partial update on an old channel with no local copy no longer makes every member client watch it and add it below the loaded pages. Grouped queries watch it when the group has no more pages, or when its known sort key places it at or above the last loaded channel.
The tests used JUnit 4 @before and @after with JUnit 5 tests, so the test Main dispatcher was never set and the share tests depended on test order. Also drop an unused JUnit 4 rule from the grouped watch tests.

LGTM

…lsLogic

Tests that mock QueryChannelsLogic drop its coverage for later tests in the same JVM. The check is a pure function of the query state, so it now lives in a top-level function, and the tests also cover a partial channel without name or image and missing channel data.
