📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Interrupted delegated tasks can be resumed and continue nested delegation while preserving parent relationships.
    • Resume operations create recoverable conversation-history backups.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Resumption is rejected when a parent no longer awaits the child.
    • Resume and delegation use current saved state to prevent conflicting updates.
    • Resumed-task saves preserve authoritative task relationships.
    • Denied pending actions are saved before continuation.
    • Recovery backups are retained when saving and rollback both fail.
    • Lifecycle errors are surfaced during failed-task cleanup.
    • Failed resume operations avoid overwriting newer conversation history.

The PR adds explicit interrupted-task resume handling, disk-validated delegation updates, conditional API-history recovery, and lineage-preserving saves. It also updates the lifecycle model, validation scripts, regression tests, and one Playwright theme helper.

Changes: Interrupted task resumption and delegation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Persistence primitives and recovery
src/core/task-persistence/apiMessages.ts, src/core/task-persistence/TaskHistoryStore.ts, src/core/task-persistence/taskLifecycle.ts, src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts
History persistence now validates disk status, restores API history conditionally, preserves lineage on selected writes, and adds resume reducers plus safe write rollback handling.
Task resume execution
src/core/task/Task.ts, src/core/task/__tests__/Task.persistence.spec.ts, src/core/task/__tests__/Task.resumeApiHistoryPersistence.spec.ts, src/core/task/__tests__/Task.pending-action.spec.ts, src/core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts, src/core/task/__tests__/Task.ignored-disabled-tools-notice.spec.ts
Task resume now prepares recovery copies before activation, restores only on eligible failures, and avoids duplicate history writes during denial replay. The tests cover the new resume and denial paths.
Provider delegation and cleanup
src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/__tests__/ClineProvider.delegation.spec.ts, src/__tests__/ClineProvider.history-resume-delegation.spec.ts, src/__tests__/removeClineFromStack-delegation.spec.ts
ClineProvider now resumes parent-linked tasks through the delegation lock, commits disk-authoritative parent updates, and reports lifecycle cleanup failures. The provider tests follow the new store API.
Models and validation evidence
scripts/check-task-lifecycle.ts, scripts/check-task-store-concurrency.ts, docs/architecture/task-lifecycle-model.md, docs/architecture/task-lifecycle-persisted-ownership-model.md, packages/types/src/history.ts, src/core/task/__tests__/Task.saveClineMessages.lineage.spec.ts, src/core/task-persistence/__tests__/*
The lifecycle and concurrency models now cover accepted resumes, stale resumes, denied replay, detachment, and explicit resume ownership. The schema, architecture notes, and regression tests match those paths.
Lineage-preserving save support
src/core/task/__tests__/Task.saveClineMessages.lineage.spec.ts, src/core/task-persistence/__tests__/TaskHistoryStore.realConcurrency.spec.ts, src/core/task-persistence/__tests__/TaskHistoryStore.reconciliation.spec.ts
The lineage tests and reconciliation tests cover interrupted-task saves that preserve disk lineage and explicit resume ownership across restart.
Safe write helper
src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts, src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.test.ts
safeWriteJson can reuse an existing lock and keeps the rollback backup when recovery fails.
Playwright theme helper
webview-ui/playwright/themes.ts
applyVisualTheme disables transitions for computed-style assertions.

Resuming interrupted tasks, including child tasks that delegate again, now activates and serializes them correctly. One narrow edge case remains. If a task that was already active is cancelled during resume preparation, its saved conversation can keep a shortened history and leave a recovery file behind. Fixing the restore check is a small change, and the PR is otherwise close to mergeable.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b8f22

Resumption gains stronger acceptance and stale-state checks. However, concurrent sessions sharing saved tasks can activate an obsolete child after its parent switches to another child, allowing further delegation on the obsolete branch. This requires an accepted resume and overlapping activity, rather than an established unauthenticated attack path.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new reactivation path does not atomically bind parent authorization to child activation across hosts. After one host verifies that parent P awaits interrupted child C, another host can redelegate P elsewhere while leaving C's parentTaskId unchanged. The first host can then persist C as active and allow it to delegate descendants despite P no longer awaiting it. The process-local lock and child-file linkage check do not cover this ordering. The underlying cross-host ownership gap predates the PR, but authoritative reactivation now enables nested delegation previously rejected for interrupted records.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified exposure concerns an obsolete task branch and descendants it can subsequently delegate. It requires accepted resumption plus concurrent writers sharing task storage. Descendants use the existing task execution configuration; the reviewed evidence does not establish new credential privileges, an unauthenticated remote trigger, or tenant-wide exposure.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A decision-changing race is: host A validates P awaiting C; host B redelegates P to D; host A activates C because C remains interrupted with backlink P. C is now eligible to persist and schedule descendant delegation. This is a source-derived authority race, not a reproduced exploit. The documentation explicitly acknowledges parent-only redelegation as an unresolved cross-host ordering.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The normal resume path filters responses before activation, checks parent delegation, and validates the authoritative child record under its file lock. Missing, malformed, mismatched-identity, non-interrupted, or changed-parent records are rejected. Repetition cannot use this operation to activate an already-active child.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Cancellation sets the live task's abort flag, and the execution loop checks that flag before issuing requests. Completion also checks whether the parent still awaits the returning child. These controls limit canceled execution and stale result routing, but a later completion check cannot undo work already delegated by a stale reactivated branch.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bind resume authorization and activation to a cross-host ownership protocol honored by redelegation and other parent-transition writers, such as a shared parent lock or generation-checked transaction. Add a two-host test that redirects the parent specifically between resume's parent check and child commit; a second unlocked parent read alone would not eliminate the race.

Explanation

The description links issue #1900, explains the implementation and expected behavior, and lists validation commands and focused tests. It does not reproduce the full template, including the pre-submission checklist and documentation-impact section, but the core required information is present.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#1900] requires an interrupted child to resume and create a new task. The PR adds explicit interrupted-child resumption, validates the parent await link under file locks, rejects stale children, preserves linkage across restart, and covers nested delegation with lifecycle, persistence, and provider tests.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

No changed path meets the security failure conditions. Task.resumeTaskFromHistory requires an accepted resume response before preparation and activation (src/core/task/Task.ts:3257-3260), and TaskHistoryStore.resumeInterruptedTask validates the disk record and parent linkage under file locks before activation (src/core/task-persistence/TaskHistoryStore.ts:1194-1227). The new recovery copies remain in the task storage directory and are written as JSON (src/core/task-persistence/apiMessages.ts:186-198). The diff adds no secret transmission, command execution, unvalidated execution sink, or approval/allowlist bypass.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

PASS — no concrete changed persistence path meets the failure condition. Interrupted resume now creates a durable recovery copy, performs an exact expected-history compare plus an interrupted-record gate under the API-history lock, and activates only after preparation succeeds (Task.ts:3403-3458, apiMessages.ts:290-330). A competing preparation therefore cannot replace the winner with different history. Failed restores retain the recovery copy, and safeWriteJson preserves surviving backups on partial rollback failure. Relevant writes are awaited and regression tests cover concurrent resumes and partial failures. Prior failure addressed: The prior race is addressed by CAS preparation: prepareInterruptedResumeHistory verifies interrupted status and expected disk history before commit; a competing resume with different prepared history is rejected, while failed restores retain the recovery copy. Added tests cover both race outcomes.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The change in webview-ui/playwright/themes.ts disables CSS transitions in the Playwright theme helper. Issue [#1900] concerns interrupted-task resumption and child delegation. The reviewed evidence does not connect this test-helper change to that behavior.

Resolution

Remove the webview-ui/playwright/themes.ts change, or provide a concrete linked coding requirement that requires transition suppression in this test helper.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

Focused regression coverage remains incomplete. ClineProvider.resumeInterruptedTask adds separate parent-locked and top-level paths plus a launched-view update at src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:824-846, but direct provider tests only exercise a parent-linked resume with isViewLaunched: false (src/__tests__/ClineProvider.delegation.spec.ts:61-75). The launched-view test at lines 654-687 covers delegation, not resume or its payload. resumeInterruptedTask rejects mismatched expectedParentTaskId at src/core/task-persistence/taskLifecycle.ts:38-40, but no direct lifecycle test supplies a mismatched parent. The post-preparation this.abandoned branch in src/core/task/Task.ts is not tested in isolation; the added test sets abortTask(true), which also sets abort, and other abandonment coverage exercises pending-action replay. Resume changes the persisted child status shown by the existing SubtaskRow/TaskStatusBadge, but the only HistoryView Playwright story and snapshots still cover empty history (webview-ui/playwright/gallery/stories.tsx:158-169 and webview-ui/src/components/history/__tests__/HistoryView.visual.tsx:8-23).

Resolution

Add direct provider tests for top-level resume and launched-view resume. Assert delegation-lock usage and the exact taskHistoryItemUpdated payload. Add a lifecycle test that passes a mismatched expected parent ID. Add a resume test that sets only abandoned = true after preparation and before activation. Add a HistoryView Playwright component story with per-theme snapshots for an interrupted child and its active resumed state, including TaskStatusBadge.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

Changed interrupted-resume paths still leave standalone tasks active after cancellation. In Task.resumeTaskFromHistory, after provider.resumeInterruptedTask commits, the abort/abandon branch calls reinterruptAbandonedChild only when parentTaskId exists, then restores history and returns; the changed code explicitly leaves a standalone record active with no runner (Task.ts:3472-3492). The added test asserts this state (Task.resumeApiHistoryPersistence.spec.ts:378-410). The denied pending-action path has the same gap: for a standalone task, cancellation after activation skips re-interruption and still calls initiateTaskLoop (Task.ts:3712-3726). initiateTaskLoop emits TaskStarted before its while (!this.abort) guard (Task.ts:4123-4127), so cancellation can produce post-cancellation work. This is a concrete changed lifecycle path that leaks an active task without a runner and can duplicate work after cancellation.

Resolution

After every interrupted-task activation, re-check abort and abandoned for standalone and child tasks. If cancellation or disposal wins after activation, persist an interrupted record with an ownership/status check, or otherwise roll back activation without overwriting a competing resume. In the denied pending-action path, return before initiateTaskLoop when cancellation wins, and only pass userContentAlreadyPersisted when activation remains valid. Replace the standalone test expectations with assertions for no TaskStarted, no loop start, and an interrupted persisted record; add equivalent deferred-activation coverage for cancellation and disposal.

@edelauna The CSS-related change is not a blocker. It only disables transitions in the Playwright theme helper, so it does not change production styling. Thanks for clarifying the scope.

CI is green, but the PR is not yet clear for merge:

  • All reported CI checks passed, including visual regression and Linux/Windows unit tests.
  • Two threads from @taltas remain unresolved, although you supplied implementation details for both.
  • GitHub still reports CHANGES_REQUESTED, with the PR review gate pending.

Ask @taltas to confirm those two fixes, resolve the threads, and update their review. The accepted theme change does not need to be split out.

I have not submitted approval.

Learning: For Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code PR #1905, edelauna accepts including the small transition-disabling change in webview-ui/playwright/themes.ts with the interrupted-child redelegation fix. Do not request splitting that change solely because it is outside the lifecycle scope.

Could we preserve explicit-resume ownership across restart, since startup currently treats this persisted active child as orphaned, interrupts it, releases its parent, and makes the next linked resume fail?

@taltas the open threads look addressed on the current head:

  • Cross-host lock: TaskHistoryStore.resumeInterruptedTask holds the parent file lock while it activates the child and re-checks the parent linkage on disk.
  • Handled error type: missing or malformed task records now throw LifecycleTransitionError, which cleanupFailedHistoryTask handles.
  • Explicit-resume ownership across restart: 593ff6eef.

Re-requesting review.

resumeInterruptedTask so it runs for every aborted or abandoned task, not only
tasks with parentTaskId. Call reinterruptAbandonedChild only when parentTaskId
exists, then always restorePreparedResumeHistory and return; preserve the
standalone committed_elsewhere behavior so the recovery copy remains available.
Add a regression case in Task.resumeApiHistoryPersistence.spec.ts using a record
without parentTaskId, setting abort inside mocked resumeInterruptedTask, and
asserting the recovery copy remains and loop is not called.

## Task Lifecycle Changes
- Read `docs/architecture/task-lifecycle-model.md` before changing task status, delegation, interruption, completion, abandonment, persistence ownership, or scheduler fan-out behavior.

Source excerpt:
# Task lifecycle model-check suite

## Test layering

Add E2E coverage only when a lifecycle change crosses one of those runtime boundaries or introduces a new one. For example, #1453 persistence-readiness semantics require a controlled fresh-host test, and #369/#372 fan-out requires scheduler permit, live-parent routing, orphan cleanup, and task-scoping E2E. Do not add E2E cases solely to replay reducer orderings already exhausted here; they increase fixture and timing cost without strengthening the proof claim.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not treat an active disk status as committed_elsewhere for a resume that started as active.

This restore gate checks for diskStatus === "active" before it checks the starting status. That order is correct only when initialStatus === "interrupted": there, an active record means some activation commit landed.

A task can start as active, for example a standalone task that was resumed and later reopened from history. Its path never calls resumeInterruptedTask, so nothing commits. The failure sequence:

  1. Line 3422 writes modifiedApiConversationHistory through overwriteApiConversationHistory. When the last API message is a user turn, that write drops the turn. The dropped turn holds the real tool_result blocks, and they now exist only in newUserContent.
  2. A cancel sets abort before Line 3439. Line 3440 then calls restorePreparedResumeHistory.
  3. The gate reads active and returns committed_elsewhere. No restore runs, so the disk keeps the shortened history.
  4. The next resume reads the shortened history. It replaces the real tool results with synthetic "Task was interrupted" errors.

The recovery copy is kept, but nothing restores it automatically. A new .pre-resume-* file is left behind on each such abort. The docstring says the restore runs "while the persisted record still shows the status this resume started from". For active starts, the gate contradicts that.

Proposed fix
 				verifyCanRestore: async () => {
 					const diskStatus = await provider.taskHistoryStore.readValidatedDiskStatus(this.taskId)
-					if (diskStatus === "active") {
+					const startStatus = this.initialStatus ?? "active"
+ // Only an interrupted start can be activated by a commit.
+					if (diskStatus === "active" && startStatus === "interrupted") {
 						return "committed_elsewhere"
 					}
-					return diskStatus === (this.initialStatus ?? "active") ? "proceed" : "abort"
+					return diskStatus === startStatus ? "proceed" : "abort"
 				},

Add a test in Task.resumeApiHistoryPersistence.spec.ts with these steps:

  • Use a record with status: "active" and an API history that ends with a user turn.
  • Abort after preparation, using the same spy pattern as the test at Line 450.
  • Assert that the disk holds authoritativeApiHistory again.
  • Assert that no recovery copy remains.

PR #1905 Review

Summary

  • Verdict: Request changes.
  • The PR adds an explicit, disk-authoritative resume path for interrupted tasks and serializes linked-child resume/redelegation through the parent-before-child lock order.
  • Lifecycle ownership, restart reconciliation, API-history recovery, lineage preservation, and model coverage are substantially stronger, and all focused lifecycle validation passed.
  • One failure path can still activate a task after durable pending-action settlement failed, leaving an active record with the denied action still replayable.
  • The hosted mutation-diff required check is also failing because 515 changed executable extension lines exceed the 500-line scope limit.

Plain-English summary

When a delegated child task is interrupted, accepting its resume prompt now performs a dedicated persisted transition instead of relying on a generic status write. The store revalidates the parent and child from disk while holding advisory locks, rejects stale ownership, marks explicitly resumed children for restart reconciliation, and keeps generic interrupted → active writes illegal. The change also prepares API history before activation, retains recovery copies around partial failures, preserves disk-owned lineage during stale metadata saves, and expands model and real-filesystem concurrency tests.

What I like

  • resumeInterruptedTask() and resumeInterruptedChild() make resume a named semantic operation while the generic transition table continues to reject interrupted → active.
  • TaskHistoryStore.resumeInterruptedTask() validates authoritative disk records and uses parent-before-child lock order for linked children.
  • TaskHistoryStore.atomicUpdateParentDelegation() bases redelegation on locked disk state rather than a stale host cache.
  • restoreApiMessagesIfUnchanged() combines the record-state gate, exact-content comparison, and replacement write under the API-history advisory lock, and its outcome type makes failure modes observable.
  • Task.restorePreparedResumeHistory() fails closed and retains the recovery copy whenever ownership or history cannot be proven.
  • The lifecycle model adds explicit resume, stale resume, denied replay, interrupted-child redelegation, and resumed nested-delegation coverage in check-task-lifecycle.ts.
  • Real-filesystem concurrency coverage in TaskHistoryStore.realConcurrency.spec.ts exercises stale hosts, lock waiting, restart ownership, failed renames, settlement races, and monotonic lineage detachment.
  • The persisted lifecycle remains separate from the pure in-memory nextRunState() kernel, consistent with the target architecture.
  • No dependencies, lockfiles, changesets, changelogs, user-facing strings, telemetry contracts, or localization resources changed.

Questions

  • Is the 515-line mutation scope intentionally approved as one review unit, or should the independent visual-theme fixture change and/or some lifecycle hardening be split so the required mutation-diff gate can run?
  • Is durable pending-action settlement intended to be a precondition of interrupted-task activation? The lifecycle model and comments say yes, but addToApiConversationHistory() currently reports only API-history persistence success.
  • Should retained resume recovery copies have a later cleanup or operator-discovery mechanism? Retaining them is the correct fail-closed behavior, but repeated ambiguous resumes can accumulate copies.

Blockers (must-fix)

1. The required mutation gate is failing on PR scope

The hosted mutation-diff check fails with: “Mutation gate failed: extension has 515 changed executable lines (limit 500). Split the PR or obtain a maintainer-reviewed narrow exclusion.” The PR is therefore blocked even though its other hosted checks are green.

This is a process/CI blocker rather than a defect at one source line, so it should not receive a misleading inline code comment. Split an independent portion of the change or obtain the documented maintainer-reviewed narrow exclusion, then rerun the check.

Majors (should-fix)

2. A denial can activate the task even when pending-action settlement failed

Exact changed line: Task.resumePendingTaskAction(), with the activation at src/core/task/Task.ts:3712.

The new denial path uses the boolean from addToApiConversationHistory() as its activation gate. That boolean means only that the API-history write succeeded. If clearPendingActionAfterDurableResult() throws while clearing the task record, addToApiConversationHistory() logs and swallows the error, still returns true, and the caller activates the interrupted record. The disk can then contain all three of:

  1. status: "active";
  2. the durable denial result in API history; and
  3. the original pendingAction, still eligible for replay after rehydration.

That contradicts the comment at src/core/task/Task.ts:3707 and the denied-replay landmark in check-task-lifecycle.ts, both of which assume the action is settled before activation. It also permits the resumed model loop to run while persisted lifecycle metadata still advertises unresolved work.

Make this path fail closed unless the matching pending action is authoritatively cleared. A bounded approach is to retry the idempotent settlement explicitly and verify the in-memory value reconciled from the store before activation:

 			if (!persisted) {
 				this.apiConversationHistory.pop()
 				throw new Error(/* existing error */)
 			}
+			await this.clearPendingActionAfterDurableResult(action.actionId)
+			if (this.pendingAction?.actionId === action.actionId) {
+				throw new PendingActionSettlementError(
+ `[Task#resumePendingTaskAction] Denial persisted but action ${action.actionId} is still pending`,
+				)
+			}
 			await provider.resumeInterruptedTask(this.taskId, this.parentTaskId)

This reuses the compare-and-clear store operation and preserves a replacement action with a different identifier. An alternative structured persistence/settlement result from addToApiConversationHistory() would also work.

Add a real-filesystem regression test beside Task.resumeApiHistoryPersistence.spec.ts that allows the denial history write to commit, injects failure into the matching task-record settlement write, and proves activation and model execution do not start while the old action remains durable. Also cover successful retry from the resulting interrupted record.

  • pnpm test — failed only in the webview package: 166 files and 2,092 tests passed, while four assertions in unchanged tooltip.spec.tsx failed. The rendered tooltip content visibly had the expected classes, but the role query selected Radix's hidden accessibility node. A narrow rerun with npx vitest run src/components/ui/__tests__/tooltip.spec.tsx reproduced 4 failures and 4 passes. The PR does not change the tooltip component or test, and hosted platform unit tests pass, so this is recorded as an unrelated local-suite failure rather than a PR finding.
  • npx -y gh-axi pr checks 1905 --repo=Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code — 20 passed, 1 failed, and 1 pending. mutation-diff is the failure; dependency review, CodeQL, compile, platform unit tests, visual checks, coverage, translation checks, and package-quality checks passed.
  • No source files were modified to make validation pass. No GitHub comment, review, label, branch, or other remote state was changed.
  • Intentionally omitted: VS Code extension-host E2E and manual interruption/restart testing. The PR adds strong reducer, store, provider, and real-filesystem integration coverage, but only a real host can validate process death at every resume phase and watcher behavior across multiple extension hosts.

Risk assessment (what could break, where, and why)

  • Persisted lifecycle integrity — medium-high: resume/redelegation ownership is much stronger, but the pending-action settlement gap can produce an active record with replayable durable work.
  • Concurrency — medium: parent-before-child ordering and locked disk revalidation cover the target race well. The architecture still documents broader live-task lineage and attempt-generation gaps outside this PR.
  • Recovery and data integrity — low-to-medium: API history uses compare-and-set restoration and durable recovery copies. Ambiguous outcomes preserve data rather than overwrite it, at the cost of possible retained copies.
  • Restart behavior — medium: explicit resumed-child ownership is represented and reconciled. Focused tests cover restart semantics, but no real extension-host restart test was run locally.
  • Scheduler behavior — low: parent delegation persists before child scheduling, and the provider handoff/scheduler model passed.
  • Security and privacy — low: persisted content remains local; no new network, authentication, authorization, secret, telemetry, or untrusted-deserialization boundary was introduced.
  • Performance — low-to-medium: resume and redelegation add narrow advisory-lock reads/writes. They are control-plane operations, not hot token-stream paths, but multi-host contention now intentionally waits on parent/child locks.
  • Compatibility — low: the optional HistoryItem.explicitResume field is backward-compatible with existing records. Generic transition behavior is intentionally stricter only for invalid stale activation.
  • Build/CI — high until resolved: the required mutation scope gate is red, independently of functional correctness.

Suggested follow-ups (if any)

  1. Make authoritative pending-action settlement a hard precondition of interrupted denial activation and add the injected settlement-failure regression test.
  2. Split the PR or obtain the documented maintainer-reviewed mutation-scope exclusion, then rerun the required check.
  3. Consider a bounded cleanup/discovery policy for retained resume recovery copies after the correctness work lands.
  4. Keep the current explicit-resume reducer, parent-before-child locking, disk-authoritative lineage, and model landmarks; these are the strongest parts of the change.

Can activation also require authoritative pending-action settlement? This boolean remains true when the API-history write succeeds but clearing the matching task-record action throws, because that error is logged and swallowed. The following activation can therefore persist active while the denied action remains replayable. Please fail closed until the matching action is confirmed cleared, and add an injected settlement-write failure test.
