The command splitter pre-replaced shell constructs with placeholder
tokens by regex before handing the string to shell-quote. Parameter
expansions were masked before substitution extraction, so the payload
of `echo ${x:-$(rm -rf ~/work)}` never became its own segment, and the
lazy substitution regex cut nested forms at the first close paren, so
`ls $(foo $(rm -rf /) bar)` produced three bogus fragments. In both
shapes the inner command rode the outer command's allowlist approval
(Zoo-Code-Org#1947).
Replace the sequential regex pipeline in parse-command.ts with one
quote-aware, left-to-right scan that tracks quote state, delimiter
depth, and heredoc state in a single pass. shell-quote still
tokenizes the masked host text. Every extracted substitution payload
is re-scanned through the same path, so nested, expansion-embedded,
process-substitution, and heredoc-embedded commands become independent
segments that each match the allow/deny lists under the existing
rules. A heredoc body under an unquoted delimiter is scanned, because
the shell expands substitutions there; a quoted-delimiter body stays
literal.
The scan also fails closed. An expansion or arithmetic delimiter that
was opened but never closed, a stray close delimiter with no opener,
a raw NUL byte, or substitution nesting beyond 64 levels now yields a
parse error, and the decision becomes malformed_command (ask/deny)
instead of an approval resting on a partial decomposition. Unbalanced
delimiters inside quoted regions stay parseable: a shell never parses
them there.
Allow/deny matching semantics are untouched; commands.ts gains
comment updates only. Substitutions inside double-quoted regions
remain opaque to the splitter, as before.

- Around line 734-736: Update the scanner in parseCommand to track
bare-parenthesis depth separately for each command- and process-substitution
frame, consuming a closing parenthesis for an inner grouping before popping the
substitution frame. Add a regression case for `$( (echo safe) )` and preserve
normal parsing and allowlist approval for this valid input.
- Around line 484-492: Update the heredoc handling in parseCommand to recognize
an empty delimiter after quote removal and terminate at the first blank line, or
return a heredoc parse error instead of masking through end of input. Add a
regression test confirming a command after the terminator is parsed as a
separate segment.
- Line 1097: Update parseHeredocDelimiter to return a delimiter parse error when
a quoted heredoc delimiter reaches its end without a closing quote, including
when CR or LF occurs before that quote; do not accept the incomplete delimiter
as quoted. Update the corresponding expectations in parse-command.spec.ts.

A CodeRabbit review dated 2026-10-20 flagged two weak test assertions and
comments that state the wrong failure path.
The assertions now pin the exact decision instead of excluding one value:
- `echo ${x:-<(rm a)}` with the `echo` allowlist entry decides `ask_user`.
- `echo )` decides `auto_approve`.
- The `case` pattern closer test pins the parsed segment by content, not by
array length.
The comments said input the parser rejects "costs a prompt". It never
reaches the approval prompt: when `parseCommand` reports a parse error, the
tool call fails with a tool error first. The module docs, the stray-closer
comment and the matching test comment now state that.
No production behavior changed. Test assertions and comments only.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
The opener-line remainder is only walked for substitutions here, so | & && || after the delimiter stay in the same segment. The PR body says this is unchanged from main, but the substitution form differs. echo $(cat <<E | rm x\nhi\nE\n) with cat and echo allowed and rm denied was ask_user on main. On this head it is auto_approve, because the payload becomes the single segment cat <<E | rm x\nhi\nE. Could the remainder be split at those operators, or fail closed when one appears?
Inside a command substitution the remainder of the heredoc opener line was walked for nested substitutions only, so an operator after the delimiter stayed inside one segment. `echo $(cat <<E | rm x\nhi\nE\n)` auto-approved with cat/echo allowed and rm denied: the segment `cat <<E | rm x` never split, and the denied command stayed invisible. On main the same input asked. The remainder now goes through the ordinary host tokenization: the heredoc payload is emitted masked, and `|`, `&`, `;`, `(` and `)` split segments, glued forms included, so that input now denies on `rm x`. The scan carries the same hardening around it: comment handling after a substitution closer is closer-aware, and a delimiter word that starts with a metacharacter (`cat <<(x)`, `cat <<|rm x`) fails closed as a heredoc parse error: bash rejects those shapes before executing anything, so failing them closed cannot refuse a command main would have approved and run. A `<<` opener followed only by blanks keeps its existing mask. The parser was then hardened against mutation testing. Guards the mutant runs left unpinned got guard rows in the parse spec, and the approval spec carries matching decision pins that join the split segments against the allow and deny lists, so a regression trips both the parse result and the resulting auto-approve/ask/deny outcome. One pair of literals on the arithmetic-detection line is disabled inline with a comment: erasing either one only clears the double-parenthesis flag, and the scan then re-counts the second `(` as an ordinary group paren at the same depth, so no reachable input emits different host bytes. Tests: parse-command.spec.ts pins the remainder splits, closer comments, metacharacter guard and the unchanged controls; commands.spec.ts pins the resulting decisions; the webview command-parser spec pins the shared parser on the opener-remainder repro. Reported in PR Zoo-Code-Org#2068 review, thread 4344495281.
What this fixes
The allowlist splitter cuts a command into sub-commands with a regex pipeline that cannot see nesting, so a substitution hidden inside a parameter expansion or truncated by nesting never gets matched against the lists and runs on the outer command's approval. #1947 has the two repro one-liners (
echo ${x:-$(rm -rf ~/work)}andls $(foo $(rm -rf /) bar), bothauto_approveonmain) and the root-cause walkthrough; this PR implements the fix that issue asks for. What the PR does
src/shared/parse-command.tswith one quote-aware, left-to-right scan that tracks quote state, delimiter depth, and heredoc state in a single pass.shell-quotestill tokenizes the masked host text; every extracted substitution payload (nested, inside a${...}expansion, inside a process substitution, or inside a heredoc with an unquoted delimiter) is re-scanned through the same path and becomes its own segment.$(,${, backtick,<(, or>(and cannot close it, leaves an arithmetic expression ($((or$[)unclosed, sees a stray)or}with no opener, a raw NUL byte, or substitution nesting beyond 64 levels, parseCommandreturns a parse error and the decision ismalformed_command(ask/deny). Unbalanced delimiters inside quoted regions stay parseable; a shell never parses them there.Scope
commands.tschanges in this diff are comments only. This is a fix to where the string is cut, not to how a segment is matched.Tests
src/core/auto-approval,src/shared/__tests__/parse-command.spec.ts): 15 files / 350 tests pass, exit 0, up from 300 onmain: 50 new tests covering both repro cases, nested and process substitution, heredoc coverage, and each fail-closed trigger (unclosed$(/${/backtick/<(/>(/arithmetic, stray closer, NUL, depth 65).command-parser.spec.ts32 pass (3 new pins for substitution, process substitution, and the fail-closed opaque case);CommandExecution.spec.tsx38 pass as the regression floor on the command UI.check-types: 0 errors. ESLint clean on all touched files. Theshared/parse-command.tssuppression entry insrc/eslint-suppressions.jsonis removed (itsno-explicit-anycount is gone with the rewrite).Known limitations / follow-ups
echo "$(whoami)"stays one opaque segment). Pre-existing, unchanged here; candidate follow-up.cat <<EOF && evil) is unchanged frommain. Pre-existing; candidate follow-up.mainand on this branch, so it is recorded as pre-existing rather than touched here.Shell scope
The splitter parses bash and POSIX-style shell syntax only. The msys/Cygwin bash is the reference shell on the Windows target. Input for other shells is read with the same bash rules. PowerShell script blocks and backtick escapes are documented consequences, pinned by characterization tests. A PowerShell grammar is separate scope.
A )' at depth 0 and a } that matches an open bare { are host text, not errors: bash closes case patterns with ) and accepts balanced braces in ordinary words. A stray } with no opener still fails closed.
