Refs #2083 (prompt half only; does not close it)

Problem

The system prompt only printed Default Shell: <path>. On Windows with the inline terminal, commands run through COMSPEC (cmd.exe), and a model (or rule files) written for bash gets cmd semantics silently, e.g. ; is not a command separator in cmd, so dotnet build x.slnx; echo %ERRORLEVEL% passes the rest of the line to MSBuild.

Change

New pure describeShellDialect(shellPath) (utils/shellDialect.ts). When execute_command is available and the shell is cmd.exe or PowerShell, the SYSTEM INFORMATION section gains a Shell Syntax: line stating the dialect and its main differences (chaining, variables, exit codes). POSIX shells get no extra line, so their prompts (and snapshots) are unchanged.

Not covered

Tests

shellDialect.spec.ts (cmd/PowerShell named, ; warning, POSIX shells untouched) and system-info.spec.ts (line present for cmd with execute_command, absent without it and for POSIX). core/prompts and utils suites (1,127 tests) and check-types pass.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

The system prompt only named the shell path, so rules and habits written for
bash silently ran with cmd semantics on Windows. Add a Shell Syntax line for
cmd.exe and PowerShell (when execute_command is available) covering command
chaining, variables and exit codes.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added shell-aware command guidance to system information.
    • Windows Command Prompt and PowerShell environments now receive relevant syntax details.
    • Command syntax guidance is shown only when command execution is available.
    • POSIX and unsupported shell environments continue without shell-specific descriptions.
  • Improvements
    • Better identifies common Windows shell environments to help generate compatible commands.

The system information prompt now includes detected syntax guidance for supported Windows shells when execute_command is available. A new helper recognizes cmd.exe and PowerShell; other shells do not produce dialect guidance.

Changes: Shell Syntax Guidance

Layer / File(s) Summary
Detect and describe shell dialects
src/utils/shellDialect.ts, src/utils/__tests__/shellDialect.spec.ts
The new helper recognizes cmd.exe and PowerShell executable names and returns shell-specific syntax guidance. Tests cover recognized shells and undefined results for POSIX and WSL paths.
Add shell syntax to system information
src/core/prompts/sections/system-info.ts, src/core/prompts/sections/__tests__/system-info.spec.ts
The prompt adds a shell syntax line when a supported dialect is detected and execute_command is available. Tests cover cmd.exe, unavailable command execution, and POSIX shells.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the problem, implementation, scope limits, and test coverage. It references issue #2083 and reports test results. It does not reproduce the template headings or complete the pre-submission checklist, but the required change and validation details are mostly complete.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

No changed path meets a Security boundaries failure condition. describeShellDialect only splits the shell path, compares the basename to fixed names, and returns fixed prompt text; it does not execute input or expose input contents. system-info.ts calls it only after the existing policy.tools.has("execute_command") gate, and getShell() supplies an allowlisted shell path. The diff adds no secret or PII flow and does not alter command approval or allowlist enforcement.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

No changed persistence path exists. The PR only adds shell-dialect detection, prompt text, and tests. It does not read or write persisted state, use storage APIs, or change defaults that require propagation.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

No changed lifecycle path exists. The PR adds only the pure describeShellDialect string classifier and prompt formatting, and it calls existing getShell() once while building the prompt. The changed code creates no listener, watcher, provider, timer, task, or other resource, and it adds no cancellation, disposal, restart, or duplicate-work path.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

PowerShell prompt output lacks focused integration coverage. system-info.ts:38-49 emits Shell Syntax for the detected dialect, but system-info.spec.ts:109-116 tests only cmd.exe; the PowerShell tests in shellDialect.spec.ts:7-10 only check the word PowerShell. A regression that omits PowerShell guidance from the system prompt could pass. The utility tests also do not verify PowerShell chaining, variable, or exit-code guidance. The negative and POSIX cases are covered. No Playwright snapshot is required because this changes model prompt text, not a UI component.

Resolution

Add a getSystemInfoSection test for a PowerShell path with execute_command enabled. Assert the Shell Syntax line and PowerShell-specific guidance. Extend shellDialect.spec.ts to assert the key PowerShell and cmd syntax fragments, including chaining, variables, and exit codes.

Assert syntax tokens for each dialect.

The name assertion can pass when the syntax guidance is removed. The existing cmd.exe test covers only the semicolon warning. Add assertions for command chaining, variables, and exit-code guidance for both dialects.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Distinguish cmdlet success from native exit codes.

If a generated command runs Get-ChildItem or another cmdlet, $LASTEXITCODE does not report its failure. It can retain an earlier native command’s exit code, so the model can treat a failed cmdlet as successful. State that $LASTEXITCODE applies to native commands and that $? reports the last command’s success. (learn.microsoft.com)
