feat(ui): add time and date format settings and message timestamps - #2223
This PR adds time and date format settings. It also adds a timestamp to each chat message.
Settings (Language tab)
Time format: Auto, 12-hour, 24-hour.
Date format: Auto, MM/DD/YYYY, DD/MM/YYYY, YYYY-MM-DD.
Show relative times in task history. When this is off, the history shows the absolute date and time.
A live preview. "Auto" follows the language that is picked in the dropdown, not the saved language. The format helpers take an optional locale for this.
Timestamps
User messages, and assistant replies after they finish streaming, show when they were sent. The task header shows when the task started.
MessageTimestamp returns nothing for a timestamp that is not a valid date, so a bad stored value cannot break a chat row.
Review notes
The three settings go through the normal updateSettings path. The defaults (Auto, Auto, relative times on) keep the current look.
The three settings are written like any other setting, with no rollback: they only change how times are shown. The host checks the values it gets for the three settings and for the language. It ignores an invalid value (one that the webview's own controls cannot send) and writes a line to the log. The other settings in the same save are still written.
A save is not a transaction. The settings are written one at a time, in the order sent. If a write fails, the error is thrown, the writes before it stay, the later ones are not written, and the webview is not refreshed. Saving again completes it. Tests cover both.
The time format is a radio group (arrow keys and one tab stop). The option that gets focus becomes the selected one.
Most of the diff is the 17 locale files. Only the language strings are added.
Where to look
webview-ui/src/utils/format.ts: formatMessageTime ("Today 2:41 PM", "Yesterday", a weekday, or a date), formatDateTime, formatDateOnly, formatTimeOnly. Each takes the time and date format, and an optional locale for the live preview.
webview-ui/src/components/chat/MessageTimestamp.tsx: the time under a message. It shows nothing for an invalid timestamp. Used in ChatRow.tsx (user, assistant and completion rows) and TaskHeader.tsx.
webview-ui/src/components/settings/LanguageSettings.tsx: the Time/Date controls and the live preview. The time format is a radio group.
webview-ui/src/components/history/TaskItemFooter.tsx: relative or absolute time in the task history.
packages/types/src/global-settings.ts, src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts: the three persisted settings and how they reach the webview.
Saving: src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts (updateSettings, with the check of the display values).
ContextProxy changes: a failed write of any setting reads its key back into the cache, a failed secret write does the same (with a 5-second limit), and setValues waits for every write and reports which keys were stored. They are here because the settings reach the host through updateSettings and API.setConfiguration, and both write through ContextProxy. There is no rollback.
Checks run in CI: check-types in webview-ui, src and packages/types, lint, unit tests, and the Playwright visual tests.
Run locally (all pass): pnpm --dir src exec vitest run core/config core/webview/__tests__/webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts (valid display values are stored, invalid values are ignored and logged, other settings in the same save are still stored, a failed write is read back), and the webview tests for utils/format, chat, history and settings.
Manual: open Settings > Language. Change the formats. Check the preview. Press Save. Check a chat message, the task header and the task history.
Scope: One feature: time and date format. The ContextProxy changes are the write-failure handling for these settings (see Review notes).
Self-Review: I reviewed my own code.
Writing Style: The title and description use Simplified Technical English.
Testing: Tests cover the formats, the preview before Save, the timestamp, invalid dates, and the failed-write paths.
Test Helpers (test changes only): Shared helpers are used only for mechanical setup. The scenarios and mocks stay in the tests.
Visual Snapshot: Baselines are committed (see "Visual Snapshots").
Documentation Impact: I checked. No documentation change is needed.
Contribution Guidelines: I read and agree to the Contributor Guidelines.
Visual Snapshots
Baselines are committed under webview-ui/**/__screenshots__/:
LanguageSettings.visual.tsx: the Language tab in the four themes.
MessageTimestamps.visual.tsx: in the four themes, the time under a user message, an assistant reply and a completion; the expanded task header; and the history item footer with relative times off (absolute date and time).
The clock and the time zone are fixed. The chat message time is masked in the extension host screenshot, because it is the real send time.
Videos (interaction / animation only)
Not applicable. The change has no animation or multi-step flow that a snapshot cannot show.
Choose automatic, 12-hour, or 24-hour time formats and automatic, month/day/year, day/month/year, or year/month/day date formats.
View formatted timestamps on chat messages and expanded tasks. Invalid, unavailable, and partial-message timestamps are omitted.
Choose relative or full date-and-time labels in task history. Settings include previews and are available in multiple languages.
Bug Fixes
Invalid date, time, or relative-time settings are ignored while other valid settings continue to save. Unsupported locales fall back to English.
When a settings save partially fails, successfully saved settings remain intact and the failure is reported.
The change adds configurable time and date formats and relative-time display. It adds locale-aware formatting and timestamps in chat, expanded task headers, and task history. Settings update paths validate display preferences. ContextProxy reports partial write failures and corrects cached values after failed writes.

Summary
Preference contract and propagation packages/types/src/global-settings.ts, packages/types/src/vscode-extension-host.ts, webview-ui/src/context/ExtensionStateContext.tsx, src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, related tests
Global settings and extension state include time format, date format, and relative-time display. Provider state projections supply defaults and expose these preferences.
Locale-aware date and time formatting webview-ui/src/utils/format.ts, related tests
Formatting helpers produce localized date, time, date-time, and message-time values. They support automatic and explicit formats and fall back to English for invalid or unsupported locales.
Preference controls and persistence webview-ui/src/components/settings/LanguageSettings.tsx, webview-ui/src/components/settings/SettingsView.tsx, webview-ui/src/i18n/locales/*/settings.json, related tests and visual fixtures, webview-ui/playwright/gallery/stories.tsx, src/core/config/displaySettings.ts, src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts, src/extension/api.ts
Language settings provide format controls and previews. SettingsView loads and saves the preferences. Update paths validate display values, log and skip invalid entries, and preserve other settings. Locale files add translations for the controls and previews.
Chat and task-history timestamps webview-ui/src/components/chat/MessageTimestamp.tsx, webview-ui/src/components/chat/ChatRow.tsx, webview-ui/src/components/chat/TaskHeader.tsx, webview-ui/src/components/history/TaskItemFooter.tsx, related tests and visual fixtures, apps/vscode-e2e/src/visual/electron.visual.ts
Chat rows and expanded task headers display valid timestamps using selected formats. Task-history footers display relative or absolute times according to the setting.
ContextProxy.setValues waits for each write to settle and reports committed and failed keys through SettingsWriteError. Failed global-state and secret writes refresh cached values when the failed write is still the latest write for that key.

The summary lists focused unit, handler, and visual coverage for the acceptance criteria.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The ContextProxy and API.setConfiguration changes support the stated settings write path and its documented sequential failure behavior. The validation changes filter the three display settings before host persistence. The available evidence does not establish a separate unrelated product feature or an unrelated change that requires removal.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No concrete security-boundary failure is introduced. The changed settings paths validate the new display values with the Zod schemas before webview and public-API writes (src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts:770-775, src/core/config/displaySettings.ts:16-34, src/extension/api.ts:639-644). Imported settings are schema-validated before storage. MessageTimestamp rejects non-finite, non-positive, and invalid dates before calling toISOString() (webview-ui/src/components/chat/MessageTimestamp.tsx:18-39). The new ContextProxy error and read-back logging include setting names and storage errors, not secret values. The changes do not execute commands, expose secrets or PII through a new outbound path, or alter approval and allowlist enforcement.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The changed settings-save path can lose buffered state after a partial write. SettingsView.handleSubmit now sends timeFormat, dateFormat, and showRelativeTimes in order at webview-ui/src/components/settings/SettingsView.tsx:448-450, then clears isChangeDetected at line 474 without a save result. The host awaits each write but intentionally stops on failure and skips postStateToWebview (src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts:766-889). If timeFormat succeeds and dateFormat fails, storage is partial, but the UI marks the settings clean. Leaving the view can discard the failed dateFormat value. The host tests document partial writes, but no changed response path preserves or reports the failed value to the UI.
Resolution
Add a save-success/save-failure response with a request identifier and committed/failed keys. Clear isChangeDetected only after success. On failure, keep the buffered settings dirty or reconcile failed fields from authoritative state and show the error. Add an end-to-end regression test that rejects one display-setting write and verifies storage, cache, webview state, dirty-state handling, and retry behavior.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The changed ContextProxy.storeSecret error path lacks focused coverage for secret deletion. storeSecret(key, undefined) now routes secrets.delete(key) through the read-back, timeout, cache-ownership, and error-reporting logic at src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts:434-460. ContextProxy.spec.ts covers successful deletion and rejected secrets.store calls, but it has no rejected secrets.delete case. This omits an affected unset/error branch. The UI timestamp rows, task header, history absolute footer, and language settings do have Playwright component snapshots.
Resolution
Add lowest-layer ContextProxy.spec.ts coverage for storeSecret(key, undefined) when secrets.delete rejects. Verify that the original delete error reaches the caller, the cache adopts the value read from secret storage, and the cache is cleared when read-back fails or times out. Include ownership protection if a newer write supersedes the failed delete.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The changed ContextProxy adds unbounded owner maps. updateGlobalState and storeSecret insert a new token for every key at ContextProxy.ts:411 and :437, but no path deletes completed owners. The runtime webview handler iterates arbitrary updatedSettings keys at webviewMessageHandler.ts:770 and forwards them at :886; it does not reject unknown keys. A malformed or programmatic caller can submit unique setting names repeatedly, causing stateWriteOwner to retain every key and token for the lifetime of the provider. This is a changed memory-resource leak. The read-back timer has a cleanup path and is not the finding.
Resolution
Bound the ownership tracking to validated, supported state and secret keys, or remove each owner entry when its write and any required read-back finish, guarded by map.get(key) === owner. Handle synchronous storage exceptions so cleanup also runs on synchronous failure. Add a regression test that writes many distinct invalid/unknown runtime keys and verifies that ownership entries do not accumulate, or validate and reject those keys before reaching ContextProxy.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Assert a 24-hour result for the 24-hour case.
This test selects timeFormat: "24h" but expects the fixed mock result "Jan 15, 2024, 2:30 PM". The assertion therefore accepts a 12-hour visible value in the case intended to verify 24-hour display. Use the real formatter with a fixed timestamp, or change the mock to return a format-dependent value and assert that value. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
As per path instructions, tests require “behavior-focused assertions.”

The comment's central claim is that the timestamp screenshot baselines are missing. The inspection at ebc18d87bfde4023d8639eab5456146b6991fc9b found all 12 expected PNG paths. A missing-baseline finding is therefore not supported for this revision, so there is no publishable comment.
@coderabbitai the two items from the last check are addressed in the latest push:
Persistence Integrity, the API path. As the maintainer decided (no rollback for these display settings), the contract is now written down and tested instead: ContextProxy.setValues and API.setConfiguration document that a write is not a transaction. If a store rejects, they reject with that failure, the stores that completed stay, and nothing after the settings is written. A test with a real ContextProxy and a rejecting globalState.update covers the first part, and an API.setConfiguration test covers the second. Invalid display values are dropped and logged on this path too.
Regression Evidence.MessageTimestamp.spec.tsx now checks the tooltip's full date and time for each format and for a "Today" label. format.spec.ts covers times on a future calendar day (tomorrow, days ahead, a month and a year ahead, and with an explicit date order): they are dated, never "Today", "Yesterday" or a weekday.

@KarthickMahalingam I checked the latest push at 3494afeb0.
The changes address the two reported gaps:
Persistence Integrity:ContextProxy.setValues now documents concurrent, non-transactional writes and the cache behavior after failure. Its new test checks error propagation, all three attempted writes, and no rollback. The API test checks that a settings failure prevents profile saving and webview refresh. I found no basis here to require rollback against the maintainer’s decision.
Regression Evidence: The tooltip tests assert full date/time output for the three explicit date orders, including when the visible label says “Today.” The formatter tests cover future calendar dates and explicit date order.
I inspected the code and test assertions. I did not execute the tests. This inspection does not update the saved pre-merge results or the provider’s approval status.
I’ll request a fresh review so the workflow can re-evaluate the checks against this head.

- For a guard or validator, test the accept path and the reject path through every public entry point. A test that only rejects bad input does not prove the guard still accepts good input.

@coderabbitai the Persistence Integrity finding about the API path is addressed in the latest push, without a rollback (the maintainer asked for none): ContextProxy.setValues now awaits every store, reads the cache of each failed key back from storage so it never runs ahead of it, and rejects with a SettingsWriteError that lists the keys that were stored and the keys that were not. API.setConfiguration documents that contract and writes nothing after the settings when it rejects. A stateful ContextProxy test with storage that really holds values rejects one display-setting store (one that stored nothing, and one that failed after storing) and checks the stored keys, the cache and the report. Please re-run the checks.

@KarthickMahalingam I inspected current head 71830fa0132e. The changes address the saved API-path finding:
ContextProxy.setValues awaits every store with Promise.allSettled.
For rejected global-state writes, it rereads storage into stateCache.
SettingsWriteError reports fulfilled and rejected keys and includes the underlying error.
API.setConfiguration awaits settings persistence before profile writes or webview refresh. A rejection stops those later steps.
The stateful tests cover rejection before storage changes and rejection after storage changes.
One distinction matters: failed identifies rejected operations. It does not guarantee that storage remained unchanged. The second test correctly covers that distinction.
My Persistence Integrity assessment is Passed for this finding. This follows the supplied repository guidance, which accepts explicit partial-failure behavior instead of rollback.
I inspected the tests but did not execute them. This reply does not update the saved checks or provider approval status. I’ll trigger a fresh review to re-evaluate the checks against this head.

Cover a pending store in the setValues failure tests.
The failure test settles every store immediately. No test in this spec keeps a store pending while setValues runs. An implementation that rejects at the first failure would produce the same assertions.
The slowWrite test in webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts mocks contextProxy.setValue and covers telemetry ordering. It does not run ContextProxy.setValues, so it does not cover this behavior.
Add a case where one store rejects while another store is still pending. Assert that setValues has not settled. Then resolve the pending store and assert that the SettingsWriteError lists that key in committed.

Add a `setValues` failure test that keeps one store write pending while another
rejects; assert the returned promise remains unsettled until the pending write
resolves. Then verify the resulting `SettingsWriteError` includes the resolved
write’s key in `committed`, preserving the existing failure and cause
assertions.

@coderabbitai the Persistence Integrity and Regression Evidence findings are addressed in 2aabfda.
Persistence Integrity: the read-back no longer lives only in setValues. updateGlobalState now reads a failed key back from storage (for every setting, so the updateSettings path is covered too), and storeSecret does the same for secrets. Both are guarded by a per-key write owner, so an older failure never replaces the value of a newer write. A failed secret whose read-back also fails is dropped from the cache instead of being served. I did not add a webview acknowledgement here: this PR has no save-result message, and that protocol is the subject of the sibling PR.
Regression Evidence: a ContextProxy.setValues test with one store that fails at once and one that is slow asserts the call stays pending after the rejection, and that after the slow store settles it rejects with a SettingsWriteError listing the committed and the failed key. Replacing Promise.allSettled with Promise.all fails it.

@KarthickMahalingam I checked current PR head 2aabfdaeb. The changes address both reported findings.
Persistence Integrity:updateSettings uses setValue, so failed global-setting writes now reach the shared read-back logic in updateGlobalState. Per-key ownership prevents an older failure from replacing a newer cached value. Secret read-back checks ownership again after the asynchronous read. If that read fails, it clears only the failed write’s cached value.
Regression Evidence: The new deferred-store test asserts that setValues stays pending after one store rejects. After the remaining store settles, it checks the SettingsWriteError and its committed and failed keys. This distinguishes wait-for-all behavior from early rejection.
I applied the supplied repository guidance that accepts explicit partial-failure behavior instead of rollback. I do not require a webview save-acknowledgement protocol to clear these findings.
I inspected the implementation and test assertions. I did not run the tests or the reported mutation check. CI should confirm the focused ContextProxy suite passes.
This assessment does not update the saved pre-merge checks or change the provider’s approval status.

Gate the in-flight read-back on a call made after the write starts.
beforeEach and the test's own proxy.initialize() call (line 401) both call mockSecrets.get. The history is not cleared before the test body. So vi.waitFor(() => expect(mockSecrets.get).toHaveBeenCalled()) at line 406 is already true. It does not wait for the failing write's read-back. The same gap exists at line 424 in the next test. The newer write can then run before the read-back starts, so a regression that skips the read-back still passes.
🔧 Suggested fix
mockSecrets.get.mockImplementation(() => new Promise((resolve) => (readBack = resolve)))
+ mockSecrets.get.mockClear() // drop the calls made by initialize(); keep the implementation
const failing = proxy.setValues({ openAiApiKey: "old-attempt" }).catch((e: unknown) => e)
Apply the same mockClear() after the mockImplementation at line 418.
As per path instructions: "Flag tests that assert in-flight behavior only after the call completes — these cannot prove the behavior fires during execution."

Bound the wait for stalled stores in setValues.
setValues waits for every store to settle before it throws SettingsWriteError. A store that never settles keeps the call pending, so a failed key is never reported. Callers such as setConfiguration and ClineProvider.setValues add no deadline. Consider a per-store timeout, or a report that does not wait for unrelated stores.

@coderabbitai on the Out of Scope Changes check: the ContextProxy.ts changes are not an extra feature. They were added in response to this PR's own earlier Persistence Integrity findings, which asked that a failed display-setting write must not leave the extension cache ahead of storage on the updateSettings path and on the public API path (API.setConfiguration, which accepts the three display settings through ContextProxy.setValues). Those paths go through ContextProxy's generic updateGlobalState, setValues and, for the same API call, storeSecret; there is no display-setting-only write path to change, so the read-back lives where the writes are. The generic behaviour is deliberately small and does not roll anything back (the maintainer asked for no rollback): a failed store reads its key back into the cache, an older failure never replaces a newer write, and setValues reports which keys were stored and which were not. If the maintainers prefer, the hardening can be split into its own change; until then I am keeping it here, with tests for each guard.
On the last item of that check, "do not clear isChangeDetected until the host confirms the save": this PR has no save-result message, and the sibling PR (#2224) implements exactly that protocol (a request id, a settingsSaveResult answer, and the unsaved state kept for a failed save), so it is not repeated here.
The Codecov partial line in ContextProxy.ts (a failed secret store that a newer write has superseded) now has a test.

A pending secret write can hide a credential that refreshSecrets has just loaded.
refreshSecrets() runs from loadConfiguration() (src/services/code-index/config-manager.ts:201). Indexing initialization can call it while a storeSecret write for the same key is still pending. If that write fails, its read-back get is queued after the refresh's get. The refresh loads the previously stored credential. If the read-back does not settle within SECRET_READBACK_TIMEOUT_MS, storeSecret sets secretCache[key] to undefined while the write still owns the key. getSecret(key) then returns undefined, although the stored credential remains. The value stays hidden until the next write, refresh, or restart.
Refresh does not change the write owner. That is why the read-back timeout still clears the value.

@KarthickMahalingam I checked head b18533606af2 against the PR base.
I withdraw the blanket Out of Scope Changes finding. The ContextProxy changes implement failure handling requested by earlier reviews of this PR. They cover the shared write paths used by the display settings. Their effect on other settings warrants review, but that effect alone does not justify requiring a separate PR. Splitting the hardening remains a maintainer decision.
The implementation does not roll back successful stores. Two details qualify its contract:
Global-state read-back is best effort. It reflects globalState.get(), which does not necessarily expose the durable value after a rejected update.
SettingsWriteError.failed identifies rejected operations. A rejected operation can have changed storage.
I also withdraw the requirement to add save acknowledgement to clear this PR’s Persistence Integrity finding. The immediate setChangeDetected(false) call exists in the base revision. This PR adds the three fields to that existing save path. The supplied persistence-integrity guidance accepts explicit partial-failure behavior, which the handler documents.
There is one integration limit: #2224 currently waits for settingsSaveResult only when a save changes an appearance setting. It does not yet protect a save that changes only the time/date settings. That limits the sibling PR’s coverage; it is not a new blocker for this PR.
I confirmed that ContextProxy.spec.ts now tests a failed secret store superseded by a newer write. It asserts that no read-back occurs and that the newer cached value remains.
I inspected the code and assertions but did not run tests or Codecov. This reply does not update the saved pre-merge results or provider approval status.

Assert the rejection of the superseded storeSecret write.
The test at ContextProxy.spec.ts:451 converts the older write's rejection into a resolved value and never checks it. A change that resolves a superseded failed write would still pass this test, because the test checks only the read-back and the cached value. Assert the rejection, as the non-superseded tests at lines 408 and 432 do.

Cover an older secret rejection while the newer store is pending.
The test at lines 441-458 awaits storeSecret("openAiApiKey", "newer") before it rejects the older store. The newer write therefore completes before the older rejection. No assertion checks the older rejection while the newer store is still pending. If the newer write recorded its ownership on completion instead of at start, the older rejection would run its read-back, and this test would still pass.
Add a case that rejects the older openAiApiKey store while the newer store is still pending. After clearing the mockSecrets.get call history, assert that mockSecrets.get is not called. Assert that getSecret("openAiApiKey") returns "newer". The dateFormat test at lines 517-542 covers the same overlap for global state only, not for secrets.
Repository test guidance requires that in-flight behavior be asserted while the call is still running. Asserting after completion does not prove that the behavior occurs during execution.

- Prefer local `webview-ui` tests for React/webview behavior. If a change is about component rendering, local state, hooks, form dirty-state, validation, or prop wiring inside the webview, add or update Vitest coverage under `webview-ui/src/**/__tests__` instead of reaching for `apps/vscode-e2e`.

## Visual Tests (Playwright Story Gallery)
### Authoring rules
- Keep behavioral assertions in Vitest. A `*.visual.tsx` test should establish a deterministic state and make a focused screenshot assertion.

## Visual Tests (Playwright Story Gallery)
### When a UI change needs a snapshot
Skip a visual test when the change is behavior-only (state transitions, handler wiring, validation) — those belong in Vitest. Visual tests are for what JSDOM cannot verify.

1122-1157: Functional Correctness
The concern is a duplicate root "language" key. The inspected files contain exactly one root "language" key in every locale file, so the claimed key shadowing does not occur. The UI-read keys also exist in the new object. The proposed verification has no defect to report.
Add an assertion for SettingsWriteError.name to kill the surviving mutants.
The mutation job reports surviving StringLiteral mutants in ContextProxy.ts at line 45 and line 41. No test reads error.name, so replacing this.name = "SettingsWriteError" with "" leaves every test passing. The path instruction asks for a test that kills a surviving mutant on changed code.
Add the assertion to this test. It already builds the error with committed keys.
The tests at lines 316 and 373 already assert the exact message for the with-committed and no-committed cases. Check the job summary to see which literal on line 41 still survives. If the mutant is equivalent, delete the redundant branch instead of adding a Stryker disable comment.
As per path instructions: "When Stryker reports a surviving mutant on changed code, prefer a test that kills it."

In the test for the committed-keys error, add an assertion that the thrown
error’s name is “SettingsWriteError,” alongside the existing instance and
message assertions. Use the existing `SettingsWriteError` symbol and leave the
other error assertions unchanged.

Description
This PR adds time and date format settings. It also adds a timestamp to each chat message.

Timestamps
MessageTimestampreturns nothing for a timestamp that is not a valid date, so a bad stored value cannot break a chat row.Review notes

Each takes the time and date format, and an optional locale for the live preview.webview-ui/src/components/chat/MessageTimestamp.tsx: the time under a message. It shows nothing for an invalid timestamp. Used inChatRow.tsx(user, assistant and completion rows) andTaskHeader.tsx.webview-ui/src/components/settings/LanguageSettings.tsx: the Time/Date controls and the live preview.
