/@mnapoli as a guest, against a local database, with the real GitHub contributor list (mnapoli is a contributor). Before is production at eb5a542, after is this branch at 5877391. Captured with Playwright (headless Chromium).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Developer profiles display a “/dev/null contributor” label beside the developer’s level when they’re listed as a contributor to the repository. The label links to their merged pull requests on GitHub.
    • Contributor status is matched using the developer’s GitHub account ID, so account name changes don’t affect matching.
    • Contributor listings are cached hourly, and GitHub may take additional time to reflect a new merge. The label is omitted when GitHub is unavailable.

Profiles of people GitHub lists as contributors to the repository show a
/dev/null contributor label beside their level, which opens their merged
pull requests. It reads the contributor list the About page already
caches, as a deferred prop in its own group, so a slow GitHub neither
holds up the profile nor the who-to-follow suggestions.

Walkthrough

User profiles now receive a deferred contributor login based on a GitHub account ID match. Matching profiles show a /dev/null contributor link to merged pull requests in the current repository.

Changes: Profile Contributor Label

Layer / File(s) Summary
Contributor lookup and deferred profile data
app/Queries/ContributorsQuery.php, app/Http/Controllers/UserController.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/UserControllerTest.php, tests/Feature/ContextualSuggestedUsersTest.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/Api/SuggestedUserControllerTest.php
ContributorsQuery returns the login for a matching GitHub account ID, or null when no account matches or account retrieval fails. UserController provides the lookup as a deferred prop in the contributors group. Tests cover matching, nonmatching, retrieval failure, and deferred-prop loading.
Profile link and documentation
resources/js/pages/user/show.tsx, KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md
When contributorLogin is present, the profile shows a link to the current repository’s merged-pull-request search for that login. The documentation describes contributor matching and update timing.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 205ca

A slow contributor lookup can restore an old tab URL, affecting refreshes and shared links. The issue is limited and recoverable.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 205ca

The change exposes a public contributor login without granting permissions or returning credentials. It reuses the existing contributor source and failure handling. Residual risk is concentrated in concurrent lookups during cache misses and unverified browser response ordering, rather than a demonstrated security regression.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Guests can now trigger contributor resolution through public profiles. The reachable resource remains the configured repository's shared contributor cache and existing GitHub client authority, rather than a viewer-selected repository, tenant or credential.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Profile input selects a local user, not the outbound GitHub destination. The contributor login comes from the ID-matched GitHub response. The link has a fixed HTTPS GitHub origin, uses the server-shared repository value, and includes noopener and noreferrer for its new tab.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The new caller may increase ordinary cold-cache contention. The application does not serialize cache misses, so overlapping requests can duplicate retrieval and overwrite snapshots in completion order. This sequence predates the PR and was already publicly reachable through the About page; additional attacker authority or a materially stronger denial-of-service path was not established. Pagination and per-request timeouts bound each retrieval, not aggregate concurrency.

…Hub login

The contributor list matches the account by GitHub ID, so it still finds
someone who renamed on GitHub before their profile synced, but the link
searched by the stale handle. The deferred prop now carries the login
GitHub reports, and the link searches by it.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Keep the selected tab URL when the deferred lookup finishes.

If a visitor switches tabs while GitHub is responding, Inertia 3.9.1 can apply the deferred response’s old URL after the tab change. The selected tab remains visible, but refresh and sharing use the wrong URL. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Preserve the current URL for this deferred reload.

Closing in favour of #1271, which turns this into a git blame achievement instead of a profile label.
