Why

The weightless sie-fake model answered /v1/chat/completions with 501 unsupported_operation: it has no chat template and no managed generation child. So the OpenCode example's agent-loop check (examples/coding-agent-opencode/conformance.py) could only run against a GPU-backed or hosted model, and CI covered it through scripted stubs only, never through a real sie-server.

What changes

The fake answers chat from a script. FakeAdapter implements the generation adapter's existing chat_completion and chat_completion_stream methods, the hooks a remote adapter already uses when it owns chat. No new abstraction. The script is deterministic, takes no weights, and is documented as test-only in the adapter docstring:

  • With tools declared and tool_choice not "none", a turn whose last message is not a tool result calls one tool: the named one, else the first declared. Every required parameter gets the last user message's text. tool_choice: "required" or a named function forces the call after a tool result too.
  • A turn that ends in role: tool messages answers Tool result: <content> for each.
  • Any other turn answers default_completion_tokens hash-derived tokens, as /v1/generate does.
  • When the profile's chat_template_kwargs enables thinking, one sentence of reasoning that names the rule applied comes first. It is returned only with keep_reasoning, which the route sets from include_reasoning, and its tokens count in usage either way.
  • A prompt token is one whitespace-separated word of the tools and messages. An output token is one streamed piece. A text answer stops at max_tokens (or max_completion_tokens) with finish_reason: "length", and also at the room left in max_seq_length. A tool call is never cut: a call turn without room for its reasoning and the whole call is refused with 400 invalid_request, the way the local engine path refuses an unterminated tool block. A prompt that leaves no room is refused with 400 INPUT_TOO_LONG. n repeats the turn. Usage is exact.
  • The tool call streams its id, type and name on the first delta and its arguments in several more.

The single-node route sends fake profiles down the adapter-owned chat path. In api/openai_local.py, _adapter_answers_chat(config) is true for remote profiles (as before) and for profiles whose adapter is the fake. Such a request gets:

  • the public chat field boundary, as on CUDA and remote, instead of the MLX boundary that refuses tool_choice: "required";
  • the existing media refusal;
  • _remote_chat_response, with its usage, tool-name, reasoning and strict-output checks.

So the fake's output passes the route's real checks. MLX, SGLang and remote dispatch are unchanged.

A sie-fake:chat profile declares enable_thinking: true, a 131,072-token window (max_seq_length) and a 4,096-token output cap. That is the shape conformance.py asks for: max_tokens: 4096 on every turn, and a 68,000-word prompt.

The example runs the check in CI. examples/coding-agent-opencode/tests/test_fake_engine.py starts the repository's sie-server with -b fake --device cpu, the same way the existing stub-upstream test starts it. It then runs conformance.run against sie-fake:chat and asserts each case. The example's existing CI step (uv run --frozen pytest -q after mise run sync) picks the test up, so no workflow change is needed. With CI set, a missing server binary fails instead of skipping. The README's "Checked without a GPU" section now shows how to run the check against the fake, and what a pass there does and does not mean.

Conformance against sie-fake:chat

tool_choice_auto pass tool_choice=auto accepted on the tools turn
streaming_tool_call_deltas pass 1 call: get_weather({"city": "What is the weather in Paris right now? Use the get_weather tool."}); 14 deltas; finish_reason=tool_calls
parallel_tool_calls fail 1 tool call in the turn: get_weather({"city": "Get the current weather in Paris and in Tokyo. Call get_weather once per city, both in this turn."})
tool_result_round_trip pass final answer used the tool result: 'Tool result: {"city": "Paris", "temperature_c": 18, "conditions": "overcast"}'
prompt_above_64k_tokens pass 68022 prompt tokens accepted and answered; needle not found
  finish_reason_stop pass finish_reason=stop after 'tok_b0437c31 tok_5aaf6099 tok_f3b6ad77 t'
  finish_reason_tool_calls pass finish_reason=tool_calls on the tool-call turn
  finish_reason_length pass finish_reason=length at max_tokens=8 (completion_tokens=8)
  usage_on_final_chunk        pass      final chunk carries usage {'completion_tokens': 40, 'prompt_tokens': 7, 'total_tokens': 47}
  include_reasoning pass 8 reasoning_content deltas, 40 chars; message.reasoning_content 40 chars; none without the flag
  tool_choice_required recorded supported: forced get_weather({"city": "Say hello."})

9 pass, 1 fail, 1 recorded

What the fake cannot honestly pass is recorded rather than faked:

  • parallel_tool_calls fails. The fake makes one call per turn, and the test asserts that failure.
  • The needle is never found. The fake does not read the prompt, so needle_found is false. The case does not require the needle.
  • finish_reason_stop passes on hash tokens, not on the word "ready". The case checks only the finish reason.

Each pass checks SIE's single-node chat wire, not a model.

Behaviour changes

  • Every sie-fake profile now answers single-node /v1/chat/completions instead of 501. The bare sie-fake has a 512-token chat window (its max_sequence_length), a 1,024-token output cap and no reasoning.
  • Queued chat through a gateway is unchanged. The worker renders a chat template there, and the fake has none.
  • /v1/models still advertises tools: false for sie-fake. Capability flags are model-wide, and the gateway path still has no fake chat.

Validation

  • mise run lint, mise run typecheck: pass.
  • New server tests: packages/sie_server/tests/adapters/test_fake_chat.py covers the script's properties. packages/sie_server/tests/api/test_fake_chat_route.py drives the real route, with the catalog config and adapter and only the registry stubbed.
  • Full packages/sie_server/tests run on macOS: 11,783 passed and 5 failed. All 5 are serving-artifact materialization tests (config/test_serving_artifacts.py, core/test_model_loader_cache.py), and they fail the same way against origin/main source on this machine. The Linux CI run is the reference for them.
  • Example, CI=1: uv lock --check, ruff format --check, ruff check, and pytest all pass. tests/test_fake_engine.py passes 8 tests in about 11 s.

Mutation check

Each mutant ran against the two new server test files and the example's tests/test_fake_engine.py (CI=1, real sie-server). The tests ran from a shadow copy of the source, so the checkout stayed untouched. Every mutant is caught.

Mutant Server tests failing Example tests failing
Route: only remote profiles answer chat themselves (the old dispatch) 9 8
Route: pre-load validation keeps the MLX boundary for the fake 1 (required on a CPU device) 1 (tool_choice_required)
Fake: reasoning never streamed 3 4
Fake: reasoning returned without keep_reasoning 1 (adapter-level; the route's own reasoning gate also strips it) 0
Fake: the window does not cap the answer 1 0

Fake: the call header carries no id 2 3

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The CPU-only fake model now supports scripted chat completions, including streaming responses, tool calls and results, and optional reasoning.
    • A chat profile is available with reasoning enabled, a 131,072-token context window, and a 4,096-token output limit. Requests that exceed token limits are rejected.
  • Documentation
    • Updated setup guidance explains how to run conformance checks against the fake chat profile and describes its expected behavior.

…s, and run the agent-loop check in CI

The weightless fake had no chat template, so /v1/chat/completions answered
501 for it and the OpenCode example's conformance check could only run
against a GPU-backed model.

The fake adapter now implements the generation adapter's chat methods with a
deterministic script: with tools declared it calls the named or first tool,
passing the last user message as every required argument; after tool results
it answers with them; otherwise it answers hash-derived tokens. When the
profile enables thinking, one sentence of reasoning comes first and is
returned only when asked. A prompt token is a word and an output token is a
streamed piece, output stops at the token limit with finish_reason length,
and a prompt that leaves no room in the window is refused.

The single-node chat route sends fake profiles through the same
adapter-owned chat path as remote profiles, so the fake's output passes the
route's real validation, tool-name, usage and reasoning checks. A new
sie-fake:chat profile declares thinking, a 131,072-token window and a
4,096-token output cap.

The example gains a test that starts the repository's sie-server with the
fake bundle on the CPU and asserts each conformance case: 9 pass,
parallel_tool_calls fails because the fake makes one call per turn, and
tool_choice_required is recorded as supported.
