Summary

Adds a fourth recipe to examples/coding-agent-opencode: the open-source sie-server on the reader's machine serves zai-org/GLM-5.3-Flash as a remote-backed model through an OpenRouter upstream. OpenCode talks to the local server and the server proxies to OpenRouter, so anyone with an OpenRouter key can reproduce it.

It also fixes a server bug the recipe found: OpenRouter ends every chat stream with a usage event that repeats the finished choice, and the remote chat parser refused it, so every streamed answer failed.

A first run with a real OpenRouter key answered 502 upstream_error on every case. Its cause is not established, because the server logged no reason. The server now logs the reason for every remote chat failure, so a rerun names it. The recipe no longer sets require_parameters; by OpenRouter's documented rule that setting excluded no endpoint for these requests, so it is not shown to be the cause. The section below has the analysis.

Changes

Server fix (fix(server): accept a usage event that restates a finished chat choice)

  • OpenRouter's streaming docs say its usage chunk carries one choice with a content-free delta that repeats the finish_reason, where OpenAI sends an empty choices array.
  • ChatStreamParser._parse_choices refused any event for an already finished choice index. Every streamed answer from OpenRouter therefore failed as upstream returned an invalid chat response.
  • On an event that carries usage, the parser now drops a choice that repeats its finish reason and carries nothing else, and the usage goes out as an OpenAI-form chunk (choices: []).
  • A restated choice is still refused when it has content, reasoning, reasoning_details, tool calls, logprobs, a different finish reason or a non-assistant role, or when the event carries no usage.
  • The raw completions parser delegates to the same parser, so it gets the same rule.

Server logging (fix(server): log why a remote chat request failed)

  • This commit landed on main unchanged as part of fix(server): log why a remote chat call failed, and warn when an upstream key is unset #738, so it is no longer in this PR's diff. fix(server): log why a remote chat call failed, and warn when an upstream key is unset #738 also logs a startup WARNING naming the upstream and the variable when an upstream's key variable is unset.
  • The single-node remote chat route logs each failure at WARNING: remote chat for <model> failed: <reason> before output, and remote chat for <model> failed after output: <reason> after it. The reason is the server's own fixed text, such as the upstream credential is unavailable or upstream answered 401, and repeats nothing the upstream sent. The caller's answer is unchanged.
  • An OpenAI-compatible answer that carries an error object in place of the chat answer is reported as upstream sent an error instead of a chat answer, not as upstream returned an invalid chat response. OpenRouter sends one when the provider it picked fails after the 200. The log then tells that case apart from an answer the parser refused.

Recipe (examples/coding-agent-opencode/recipes/openrouter/)

  • upstreams.yaml: the openrouter upstream (kind: openai, https://openrouter.ai/api/v1, endpoints: [chat], key read from OPENROUTER_API_KEY).
    • rate_cap is 60 requests a minute and 4 at a time. breaker is 5 failures in 30 s, then 60 s open.
    • No provider preference; see below.
    • strip_params: [chat_template_kwargs], because the server adds that field from the model file and only a local chat template reads it.
  • models/zai-org__GLM-5.3-Flash.yaml: remote_backed: true with routing: {policy: remote_only}, and one default profile on OpenAIUpstreamAdapter with upstream_model: z-ai/glm-5.3-flash.
    • The window is in tasks.generate.context_length (131072) and max_output_tokens (32768), plus max_sequence_length: 131072.
    • capabilities.tools: true, inputs.image: false.
    • chat_template_kwargs.enable_thinking: true is the declaration that lets include_reasoning publish the upstream's reasoning.
  • opencode.json: a provider at http://localhost:8080/v1 with model zai-org/GLM-5.3-Flash, limit.context 131072, limit.output 32768, tool_call, reasoning, interleaved.field: reasoning_content and options.include_reasoning: true, the same model settings as the Cloud recipe.
  • run_gate.sh accepts openrouter like laptop: a local server, so no SIE_BASE_URL or SIE_API_KEY.
  • README: the section "Self-hosted SIE with an OpenRouter upstream", with the exact sie-server serve command, what a 502 can mean and the log reason for each, what an OpenRouter 400 or 422 becomes, the startup warning for an unset key, what SIE adds, what the two server files do, and a results subsection left pending. The example gallery row now names the recipe.

Evidence without an OpenRouter key

tests/test_openrouter_recipe.py runs in the example's CI step. It starts the repository's sie-server with the recipe's models/ directory and a copy of its upstreams.yaml pointed at a stand-in on 127.0.0.1. Plain HTTP on loopback is allowed by validate_upstream_url. The stand-in follows OpenRouter's documented behaviour:

  • : OPENROUTER PROCESSING comment lines before and between events;
  • reasoning in reasoning and reasoning_details;
  • tool-call deltas, with the id and name on the first delta;
  • a closing usage event that repeats the finished choice;
  • with provider.require_parameters set, a 404 (No endpoints found that can handle the requested parameters.) when no endpoint lists every request field that is one of OpenRouter's parameter names. tests/openrouter_endpoints.json holds the 33 supported_parameters lists from the model's public endpoints response and the 26 parameter names used in OpenRouter's public model list. stream and stream_options are not among those names, so they do not count. See below for why;
  • for a request whose user message is a marker, a 401, 402 or 404 JSON error in OpenRouter's documented shape, or a 200 stream whose only event is OpenRouter's documented mid-stream error.

conformance.py then runs against the server:

model zai-org/GLM-5.3-Flash at http://127.0.0.1:57221/v1
served by remote
warm-up: 1 attempt(s), 0.1s

tool_choice_auto pass tool_choice=auto accepted on the tools turn
  streaming_tool_call_deltas pass 1 call: get_weather({"city": "Paris"}); 2 deltas; finish_reason=tool_calls
  parallel_tool_calls pass 2 calls in one turn: get_weather({"city": "Paris"}), get_weather({"city": "Tokyo"})
tool_result_round_trip pass final answer used the tool result: 'It is 18 degrees and overcast in Paris.'
prompt_above_64k_tokens pass 68021 prompt tokens accepted and answered; needle found

  tool_choice_required recorded supported: forced get_weather({"city": "Paris"})

10 pass, 0 fail, 1 recorded

What the test asserts about what the stand-in received (test_each_case_reaches_the_upstream_with_exactly_these_fields):

  • The 11 requests of a conformance run arrive in order, one per row of the table below, each with exactly the fields and values listed there and its prompt.
  • Every request went to /api/v1/chat/completions with Authorization: Bearer <OPENROUTER_API_KEY>.
  • The round trip forwarded the assistant turn's reasoning_content, which OpenRouter documents as an alias of reasoning.
  • With provider: {require_parameters: true} added, every one of the 11 requests still routes under the stand-in's rule.

test_a_refusal_answers_502_and_the_server_log_names_why sends the marker requests through the server: each answers 502 upstream_error: upstream generation request failed, the server log has upstream answered 401, upstream answered 402, upstream answered 404 or upstream sent an error instead of a chat answer, and nothing the stand-in sent appears in the log.

/v1/models lists the model with max_sequence_length: 131072, capabilities.tools: true and routing: {policy: remote_only, upstream_kind: openai}. Answers carry x-sie-served-by: remote and x-sie-upstream: openrouter. Without the parser fix, the same test fails: every streamed case comes back as an invalid chat response.

A run with a real key answered 502 on every case

sie-server started on 127.0.0.1:8080, and every conformance case failed fast with 502 upstream_error: upstream generation request failed, including the plain no-tools finish_reason_stop. The server log was not available, and before this PR it would have shown only the access line.

What that answer tells

upstream generation request failed is what the remote chat route answers when a request fails before any output. After output it ends the stream with an error event (upstream stream error) instead. So every request failed before its first event. Each of these gives exactly that answer:

  • The server could not use an answer, or sent nothing: OPENROUTER_API_KEY missing from the server's environment (the server starts without it, because it reads the key for each request), a redirect (refused), or a client-side protocol error.
  • OpenRouter answered with an error status other than 429 or 5xx (those answer 503 with Retry-After), or with 501 or 505: 401 for the key, 402 for credits, 403, 404 when OpenRouter finds no endpoint (for example under the account's provider or data-policy settings). At the time of that run, 400 and 422 did too. Since fix(api): check tool names on every chat route and report an upstream refusal as a 400 #737 they answer 400 invalid_request.
  • OpenRouter answered 200, then sent one of these: a first event that is an error object, as its streaming docs say happens when the provider fails after the response is committed; a body that is not SSE for a stream or not JSON for a non-streamed request; a compressed body; or a stream that ends, or sends [DONE], before a finished choice and exact usage. A first event the parser refuses gives it too.

Reproduced with the key unset. conformance.py against the recipe's server with OPENROUTER_API_KEY unset gives exactly the owner's output: 0 pass, 10 fail, 1 recorded, and every failure reads 502 upstream_error: upstream generation request failed. For that run the upstream pointed at a closed loopback port, so nothing could leave the machine. With this PR, the server log has one line per request: remote chat for zai-org/GLM-5.3-Flash failed: the upstream credential is unavailable. That cause fits the pattern: every request failed fast, the non-streamed one included. The pattern does not prove it, though. A wrong key, no credits or an account setting that leaves no endpoint looks the same from the client. The rerun's server log will say which.

Rerun. OpenRouter answered 402, which the server logs as upstream answered 402. It accepted the key and refused the requests because the account has no credits. GLM-5.3-Flash is a paid model on OpenRouter: all 33 endpoints list a non-zero price. The README's results stay pending until a run on an account with credits.

What the server sends upstream, per request

Pinned by test_each_case_reaches_the_upstream_with_exactly_these_fields, in this order. Every request also carries model: z-ai/glm-5.3-flash and messages, and nothing else.

# Request Cases Fields
1 warm-up every case waits on it stream: true, stream_options: {include_usage: true}, max_tokens: 4, temperature: 0
2 reasoning, with include_reasoning include_reasoning stream: true, stream_options, max_tokens: 4096, temperature: 0
3 reasoning, without it include_reasoning as 2
4 reasoning, not streamed include_reasoning stream: false, max_tokens: 4096, temperature: 0
5 tools turn tool_choice_auto, streaming_tool_call_deltas, finish_reason_tool_calls as 2, plus tools: [get_weather], tool_choice: auto
6 two cities parallel_tool_calls as 5
7 tool result (user, assistant, tool) tool_result_round_trip as 5
8 long prompt prompt_above_64k_tokens as 2
9 stop finish_reason_stop, usage_on_final_chunk as 2
10 length finish_reason_length as 2, with max_tokens: 8
11 forced tool tool_choice_required as 5, with tool_choice: required

include_reasoning and chat_template_kwargs are not forwarded. The parallel_tool_calls case sends no parallel_tool_calls field, and no request carries n or max_completion_tokens.

require_parameters is not shown to be the cause

  • OpenRouter's provider routing docs define it as "Only use providers that support all parameters in your request." The explanation under it is about the LLM parameters on its parameters page, which lists 25 of them. Across OpenRouter's public model list (462 models, fetched 2026-10-14), supported_parameters uses those 25 names plus prediction. Neither list holds stream or stream_options.
  • The LLM parameters in the requests above are max_tokens, temperature, tools and tool_choice. All 33 endpoints of z-ai/glm-5.3-flash list all four. So by the documented rule, the recipe's earlier require_parameters: true excluded no endpoint for any of these requests.
  • Counting stream_options would mean every OpenAI-SDK stream with include_usage is refused under require_parameters on every model, because no model lists it.
  • The earlier version of this PR made the stand-in count stream_options and presented the refusal as likely in the README. That was an assumption, and it is withdrawn. Under the documented rule, restoring the old upstreams.yaml still gives 10 pass and 1 recorded through the stand-in, and only the per-request field test fails, on the extra provider field. Whether OpenRouter counts any other field shows only with a key.

Why the recipe sets no require_parameters

  • For every request OpenCode and the check send, it excludes no endpoint. So it adds nothing for this recipe. OpenRouter's default routing already sends a request with tools only to providers that support tools, and all 33 endpoints list tools and tool_choice.
  • What changes without it: if a caller sends a parameter that the chosen endpoint does not list, the endpoint ignores it. With the flag, the request would go only to endpoints that list the parameter, or get a 404 when none does. Counts among the 33 endpoints on 2026-10-14:
    • parallel_tool_calls 1
    • logprobs and top_logprobs 17
    • seed 22
    • top_k 26
    • stop 29
    • response_format 31 (OpenRouter applies its soft routing preference for response_format with or without the flag)
  • tool_choice values: the endpoints' supports_tool_choice shows required unsupported on 11, none on 6 and a named function on 10. OpenRouter does not document routing by these values, with or without the flag. So the guarantee covers only tools and tool_choice being accepted.
  • strip_params was not an option for stream_options. apply_params, which applies set_params and strip_params, runs in OpenAIUpstreamAdapter._generation_request before the server adds stream_options to a streamed request. So strip_params: [stream_options] cannot remove it. The earlier body gave another reason, that the stream would then end without usage. That was wrong: OpenRouter's streaming docs say every Chat Completions stream ends with a usage chunk.

The two other candidates

  • Model slug: z-ai/glm-5.3-flash is the id in the endpoints response and in OpenRouter's model list, with canonical slug z-ai/glm-5.3-flash-20260826 and no expiration date.
  • Authorization: the server sends Authorization: Bearer <key> (_EnvBearerAuth), reading OPENROUTER_API_KEY for each request. That is the form OpenRouter's API reference uses, and the stand-in test asserts it on every request.

Rerunning with the real key

  1. Export OPENROUTER_API_KEY in the shell that starts sie-server, then run the README's commands.
  2. If a case answers 502, the server log's WARNING line names the reason. The README maps each reason to its cause.
  3. If requests get through, 10 pass and tool_choice_required recorded is the result when OpenRouter's providers behave like the stand-in. The items below can fail single cases.

Not covered here

Only a run with a real key shows these:

  • Which provider OpenRouter picks, and how it streams. If a provider streams reasoning only in reasoning_details, the server streams no reasoning_content, although the non-streamed answer still carries it.
  • tool_choice_required. 11 of the 33 endpoints report no support for required. If OpenRouter routes the forced-tool request to one of them, the model can answer "Say hello." with text. conformance.py then marks the case fail, not recorded. Since fix(api): check tool names on every chat route and report an upstream refusal as a 400 #737 the server refuses that answer as an upstream error, so the case fails either way.
  • finish_reason_length (max_tokens: 8). OpenRouter lists reasoning as mandatory for this model. Its reasoning guide says reasoning counts against max_tokens on most providers, and its example reports completion_tokens: 302 for max_tokens: 300. The server refuses an answer whose completion_tokens exceed the request's max_tokens. That check runs after output, so the stream ends with an error event and the case fails.
  • Repeated tool-call ids. A provider that repeats the tool-call id on every argument delta overflows the parser's 256-character limit on the concatenated id, and the tool cases are refused mid-stream.
  • Stream shapes the stand-in does not send, which the parser refuses as invalid. These end a stream with an error event:
    • a usage-event choice whose finish_reason is null;
    • a usage-event choice with non-empty reasoning_details;
    • a mid-stream error event (finish_reason: "error").

The README's OpenRouter results are pending for that run. Do not merge before it is recorded.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added an OpenRouter setup for using GLM-5.3-Flash with OpenCode alongside the existing setup options.
    • Added guidance on model configuration, credentials, request limits, streaming and tool support, and verification status.
    • OpenRouter can be selected without SIE credentials; cluster and Cloud setups still require them.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved compatibility with streaming responses that repeat a completed choice in a usage update.
    • Upstream error responses in place of chat answers are now reported consistently.

Krisztian Gajdar added 3 commits October 14, 2026 16:45
An OpenAI-compatible upstream may end a chat stream with a usage event that repeats the finished choice with an empty delta and the same finish_reason, instead of an empty choices array. OpenRouter documents this form. The remote chat parser refused any event for a finished choice, so every streamed answer from such an upstream failed as an invalid chat response.

The parser now drops a choice on the usage event that restates its finish reason and carries nothing else, and forwards the usage as an OpenAI-form chunk. A restated choice with content, reasoning, tool calls, logprobs, a different finish reason, or without usage is still refused.
…penRouter upstream

Adds a fourth recipe: sie-server on the reader's machine serves zai-org/GLM-5.3-Flash as a remote-backed model through an OpenRouter upstream, and OpenCode talks to the local server. The recipe holds the server's upstreams.yaml and models directory and the OpenCode config. run_gate.sh accepts it as a local-server recipe that needs no SIE key.

A new test starts the repository's sie-server with the recipe pointed at a loopback stand-in that streams the way OpenRouter documents (SSE comment lines, a reasoning field, tool-call deltas, a usage event that restates the finished choice) and runs conformance.py against it. The README records how to run it and leaves the real-key result pending.

Every OpenRouter endpoint of z-ai/glm-5.3-flash lists tools and
tool_choice, and OpenRouter already sends a request with tools only to
providers that support them, so the preference added no guarantee. It
did hold each request to the parameters a provider lists, and the server
adds stream_options to every streamed request, which no endpoint lists.

The stand-in now refuses a require_parameters request with 404 when a
field falls outside every endpoint's published parameter list, and the
test pins the exact fields the server forwards. The README says which
failures answer 502 upstream_error.

Krisztian Gajdar added 2 commits October 14, 2026 19:51
The single-node remote chat route answered every refused or broken
upstream call with the same fixed 502 (or, after output, the same
in-stream error) and logged nothing but the access line, so a missing
upstream key, a 401, a 402, a 404 and an upstream error event all looked
the same to an operator.

The route now logs the failure's reason at warning level, for example
"the upstream credential is unavailable" or "upstream answered 401".
The reason is the server's own fixed text and repeats nothing the
upstream sent. The caller's answer is unchanged.

An OpenAI-compatible answer that carries an error object in place of the
chat answer, as an upstream sends when the provider behind it fails after
the 200, is now reported as "upstream sent an error instead of a chat
answer" rather than as an invalid chat response, so the log tells it
apart from an answer the parser refused.
…g rule

The stand-in now applies require_parameters only to the parameter names
OpenRouter's public model list uses, the LLM parameters its provider
routing docs refer to. stream and stream_options are not among them.
Under that rule the recipe's earlier require_parameters setting would
have excluded none of the model's 33 endpoints for any request the
server sends, so it was not shown to cause the 502s of the first run
with a real key.

The test pins the exact fields and values of each request the
conformance check sends through the server, and checks that a 401, 402,
404 or an error event from the stand-in comes back as a 502 whose reason
the server log names. The fixture gains the 26 parameter names from
OpenRouter's model list.

The README lists what a 502 on this route can mean and the log reason
for each, states what dropping require_parameters changes, and records
that tool_choice_required can fail on an endpoint without "required"
support.

Reject additional data on a restated choice. If a usage event repeats a finished choice with message: {"content": "new text"}, _restates_finish accepts the choice because it never checks message. The parser then drops that data and accepts the event. Restrict restated choices to the permitted top-level fields before skipping them.

@coderabbitai On the outside-diff finding at _openai_chat.py:275-277 (reject a restated choice that carries message or other top-level fields): not changed. The evidence:

  1. In a stream, _parse_choices reads only delta and logprobs from every choice, finished or not (field = "delta" if stream else "message"). A message key on any streamed choice is ignored. The restated choice is held to the same rule as every other streamed choice. Everything it could carry that the parser reads is refused: delta content, reasoning, reasoning_details, refusal or tool calls; logprobs; a different finish_reason; a non-assistant role. test_finished_choice_restated_with_anything_new_fails and test_restated_choice_with_logprobs_fails pin those cases.
  2. OpenRouter's documented usage chunk puts a top-level native_finish_reason next to finish_reason on the restated choice (https://openrouter.ai/docs/api_reference/streaming.md, "The final usage chunk"), and the stand-in in tests/test_openrouter_recipe.py sends it. An allow-list of top-level choice fields would refuse real streams over keys the parser never reads. Avoiding that kind of refusal is why this rule exists.

The README finding at line 124 is addressed in 13f66c7d. The head is now 80190955, a merge of origin/main. @coderabbitai review

@krisztian-gajdar Thanks for the explanation. I withdraw the outside-diff finding in _openai_chat.py at Line 275–277.

The parser ignores message on streamed choices. It also ignores unknown top-level fields, including native_finish_reason. An allow-list would add an unnecessary compatibility restriction. _restates_finish still rejects new delta data, non-null logprobs, a changed finish reason, and a non-assistant role. The stand-in includes native_finish_reason on its repeated usage choice.

You confirmed that the README finding was addressed in 13f66c7d. The current README contains the revised error-response guidance.

Learning: In packages/sie_server/src/sie_server/adapters/remote/_openai_chat.py, ChatStreamParser._parse_choices reads delta rather than message for streamed choices and ignores unknown top-level choice fields. Usage events may restate a finished choice when _restates_finish accepts it; the repeated choice is omitted from normalized output. Do not require a top-level choice-field allow-list for these restatements: OpenRouter uses native_finish_reason, which the stand-in in examples/coding-agent-opencode/tests/test_openrouter_recipe.py also sends. The restatement check must still reject new delta data, non-null logprobs, changed finish reasons, and non-assistant roles.

…the server now has

An OpenRouter 400 or 422 now reaches the caller as 400 invalid_request with its own log line, the server warns at startup when OPENROUTER_API_KEY is unset, and the chat route checks calls against the request's tools. The 402 row names the paid model.
