Summary

Fixes the red frontend:scripts-self-tests lane on main: scripts/__tests__/check-storage-owner.test.mjs fails 9 assertions.

Cause. scripts/ci/check-storage-owner.mjs was rewritten. It now walks the resolved normal and build dependency graph (metadata.resolve.nodes) from every non-root first-party package, and its entry point is checkMetadata(metadata, root). The self-test that pnpm test:scripts runs still targets the old checker:

  • It calls checkMetadata(m, ALLOWLIST, root), so the allowlist object is passed as root.
  • Its fixtures have no resolve graph, so the closure walk finds nothing.
  • It expects the old report wording ("depends on").

The rewrite's own fixture suite was added under scripts/ci/__tests__/, but test:scripts only globs scripts/__tests__/*.test.mjs, so it never ran.

Fix.

  • The current suite moves into scripts/__tests__/check-storage-owner.test.mjs, replacing the stale one, with its import path fixed. Its fixtures cover a transitive engine through a tsd crate, tag mismatch, an allowlisted root, crate naming, vendored tsd and aws-sdk-s3.
  • The old cases that still apply are ported to the resolve-graph fixtures: dev-only edges are not part of the closure, the report names the offender and the engine, the vendored path is anchored to the repo root, and the CLI exits 1, 0 or 2.

Checker fixes.

  1. Normal edges are followed. cargo metadata reports a normal dependency edge as kind: null ("dev", "build", or null). The closure walk accepted only undefined, "normal" and "build", so it skipped every normal edge in real metadata, including its own [{ kind: null }] fallback. Main's green gate was blind as a result: on main 8e73d9b it prints ok, and with only this fix it fails with 29 lines.

  2. The walk stops at composition roots. About 18 of those 29 lines came from walking through an ALLOWLIST root. Examples: "openhuman-embed reaches fs2 via openhuman", "openhuman-tinyhumans … via openhuman-embed -> openhuman", "tinychannels-module reaches rusqlite via tinychannels". Every crate above core depends on core, which owns the backend by design. A root owns what it reaches, so the walk no longer passes through one, which matches "reachable only from the composition roots" in AGENTS.md.

  3. The two remaining reaches are explicit exceptions. ENGINE_EXCEPTIONS lists exact (package, engine) edges, each with a reason and a follow-up:

    • tinytools-std -> fs2: advisory file locking for the workspace lock file. This one edge flags every tinyagents crate and tinyvoice-module, which reach it through tinyagents-harness.
    • tinymemory-integrations -> rusqlite: it reads legacy memory SQLite directly. It also flags openhuman-tinyhumans.

Only that edge is excused. Any other package or engine still fails, and against the real workspace an entry that no longer matches anything fails as stale-exception.

Self-tests cover a null-kind normal edge being followed, the stop at a root, an exception excusing exactly its edge but not another package or engine, every exception carrying a reason and follow-up, and stale detection.

Draft vendor issues (not filed).

tinyhumansai/tinytools: Drop fs2 from tinytools-std

OpenHuman's storage-owner gate (scripts/ci/check-storage-owner.mjs) allows storage engines, fs2 among them, only in tinystoragedrivers and the host's composition roots. tinytools-std depends on fs2 for advisory locking of the workspace lock file, so every crate above it (all of tinyagents and tinyvoice-module) reaches a storage engine. OpenHuman records it as an explicit exception for now (ENGINE_EXCEPTIONS). Proposed fix: take the lock through std::fs::File::lock (stable since Rust 1.89; tinytools' MSRV is 1.88, so that needs an MSRV bump), or through a lock port the host provides. Then drop fs2, after which the OpenHuman exception goes away.

tinyhumansai/tinymemory: Route tinymemory-integrations' SQLite through the storage owner

tinymemory-integrations depends on rusqlite directly, so openhuman-tinyhumans reaches a storage engine outside tinystoragedrivers. OpenHuman's storage-owner gate records it as an explicit exception for now. Proposed fix: read the legacy memory database through the tinystoragedrivers ports, or through a tinystoragedrivers-connect SQLite handle the host passes in, and drop the direct rusqlite dependency.

For the reviewer: one behaviour this records. The old suite had "the standalone storage types contract may come from a pinned git revision", the tinystoragedrivers-types exemption from cb2aaa7. The rewritten checker has no such exemption: a git-sourced tinystoragedrivers-types is now tsd-not-vendored. On main both lockfiles resolve tinystoragedrivers-types to the vendored path, since the root [patch] covers it, so the gate passes today. That case is therefore not ported. If the exemption should come back, it belongs in the checker.

Tests

  • pnpm test:scripts in the scripts self-test lane.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Dependency checks now handle normal and development dependencies consistently, respect configured exceptions, and flag exceptions that are no longer in use.
    • Checks stop at designated composition roots and better identify dependencies reached through vendored packages.
  • Tests

    • Expanded coverage for dependency paths, package naming, exception handling, reports, and command-line exit statuses.

…ecker

check-storage-owner.mjs was rewritten to walk the resolved dependency
graph (`resolve.nodes`) and now takes `checkMetadata(metadata, root)`.
The self-test the scripts lane runs (scripts/__tests__) still called the
old `checkMetadata(m, ALLOWLIST, root)` with fixtures that have no
resolve graph, so 9 assertions failed. The rewrite's own fixture suite
went to scripts/ci/__tests__, which `pnpm test:scripts` never runs.

Move that suite into scripts/__tests__ in place of the stale one, and
port the old cases that still apply: dev-only edges are ignored, the
report names the offender, the vendored path is anchored to the repo
root, and the CLI exit codes. The checker is unchanged.

Completeness: Complete
Test assessment: No supported feature-to-test mapping was available; this does not mean tests are absent or passed.

What changed

`scripts/ci/check-storage-owner.mjs`: the closure walker accepts dep_kinds entries whose `kind` is null (and absent dep_kinds) as normal edges via `dk.kind == null`, skips any dependency whose name is an ALLOWLIST root, and consults ENGINE_EXCEPTIONS so a matching edge is excused and recorded in a `used` set that `checkMetadata` threads through from `main`; `staleExceptions` emits `stale-exception` violations when real-workspace metadata (no `--metadata` fixture files) leaves an entry unused. The checker's former `tinystoragedrivers-types` pinned-git-revision exemption is not restored; the description discloses that and defers to the reviewer.

Features

  • Modified — Normal dependency edges (`kind: null`) are followed by the closure walk: Real cargo metadata reports normal edges as `kind: null`; the previous check only accepted `undefined`, `"normal"` and `"build"`, so real normal edges were skipped and the gate printed `ok` on main. The walker now treats these as normal edges, which makes the gate actually reach engines. (scripts/ci/check-storage-owner.mjs export function checkEngineClosure(metadata, roots) {)
  • Added — Closure walk stops at composition roots: Reaches that pass through an ALLOWLIST root are no longer attributed to the upstream package, because a root owns what it reaches. The description attributes roughly 18 of the 29 suspected lines on main to the old pass-through behaviour. (scripts/ci/check-storage-owner.mjs export const ALLOWLIST = {, scripts/ci/check-storage-owner.mjs export function checkEngineClosure(metadata, roots) {)
  • Added — ENGINE_EXCEPTIONS excusing exact (package, engine) edges: Two known reaches (`tinytools-std -> fs2` and `tinymemory-integrations -> rusqlite`) are excused only for that exact edge; any other package or engine into the same crate still fails, so the exceptions do not blanket-hide an engine. Each entry carries a reason and a follow-up. (scripts/ci/check-storage-owner.mjs export const ALLOWLIST = {, scripts/ci/check-storage-owner.mjs export function checkEngineClosure(metadata, roots) {)
  • Added — Stale-exception detection on real-workspace runs: When the run is against real workspace metadata rather than `--metadata` fixtures, exceptions that no longer match any reach produce `stale-exception` violations, so an obsolete excusal cannot linger. (scripts/ci/check-storage-owner.mjs export function main(argv) {)
  • Internal refactor — `used` set threaded through `checkMetadata` and `checkEngineClosure`: Lets `main` accumulate which exceptions actually matched across documents and then compute stale ones, without changing each individual check's violation set beyond exception handling. (scripts/ci/check-storage-owner.mjs export function checkEngineClosure(metadata, roots) {, scripts/ci/check-storage-owner.mjs export function main(argv) {)

tests

  • Conclusion: Success

  • Lane summary: The moved test file can never run: `scripts/__tests__/check-storage-owner.test.mjs` imports `ENGINE_EXCEPTIONS, checkMetadata, formatReport, staleExceptions` from `../ci/check-storage-owner.mjs`, which does not exist from that directory, so the suite fails at import and none of the new exception/stale-exception behaviour is verified. Also, moving the file deletes the only CLI test coverage, and the remaining CLI test does not pass a matching `used` set, so `staleExceptions` would fail a clean run. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `36819ece1578`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

📝 Walkthrough

The storage-owner checker now evaluates Cargo dependency metadata, applies exact engine exceptions, and reports unused exceptions in workspace runs. Its tests use Cargo-shaped fixtures to cover dependency traversal, validation results, and CLI behavior.

Changes: Storage-owner dependency validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Dependency traversal and exception handling
scripts/ci/check-storage-owner.mjs
The checker treats null and undefined dependency kinds as normal edges, stops traversal at composition roots, and suppresses only exact package-to-engine exceptions. It records matched exceptions and reports unmatched exceptions for workspace metadata runs.
Cargo metadata fixtures and checker coverage
scripts/__tests__/check-storage-owner.test.mjs, scripts/ci/__tests__/check-storage-owner.test.mjs
The replacement tests model Cargo package metadata and dependency edges. They cover engine reach, exceptions, composition roots, TSD tag mismatches, crate-name violations, allowlisted roots, vendored trees, report text, and CLI exit statuses. The previous test file is removed.

Make the transitive test require graph traversal.

The checker already classifies tinystoragedrivers-sqlite as a forbidden engine. It reports that first edge and stops before rusqlite, so this assertion passes without testing a transitive reach. Use a non-engine intermediate crate, such as tinystoragedrivers-core, and assert the offender, engine, and full path. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

`cargo metadata` reports a normal dependency edge as `kind: null` ("dev",
"build", or null). The closure walk accepted only `undefined`, "normal"
and "build", so it skipped every normal edge in real metadata, including
its own `[{ kind: null }]` fallback, and the gate could not see an
engine reached through ordinary dependencies. Accept null.

The self-test modelled normal edges as "normal", which is why it passed;
its fixtures now use null as cargo does. The transitive fixture now goes
through the non-engine tinystoragedrivers-core and asserts the rusqlite
path, so a direct-dependency-only checker would fail it.

…eaches

With normal edges followed, the closure walk reported every crate above
core (embed, tinyhumans, rpc, modules-linked, tinychannels-module) as
reaching the engines core owns, because it walked through composition
roots. A root owns what it reaches, so the walk now stops at ALLOWLIST
roots.

Two reaches remain that no root explains. They are recorded as exact
(package, engine) edges in ENGINE_EXCEPTIONS, each with a reason and a
follow-up: tinytools-std -> fs2 (advisory file locking) and
tinymemory-integrations -> rusqlite. Only that edge is excused; another
package or engine still fails, and when checking the real workspace an
entry that matches nothing fails as stale.

Self-tests cover a null-kind normal edge, the stop at a root, an
exception excusing exactly its edge, and stale detection.

The closure walk skipped a package it had already seen before checking
whether it was an engine. Once `tinytools-std -> fs2` (an excepted edge)
had put fs2 in `seen`, a second, non-excepted edge into fs2 from another
crate was never looked at. Check roots and engines on every edge, and use
`seen` only to avoid re-walking a package. A branching-graph self-test
covers it: the excepted path stays quiet and the other path is reported.
