The Build step writes a detailed MSBuild text log next to the binlog and uploads both. On macOS that text log is 1.9 GB, and nothing reads it:

  • No script, workflow or doc in the repo uses build.log or msbuild.log.
  • The binlog has the same content. I regenerated the text log from the macOS binlog of ci: measure the round 4 CI changes together (do not merge) #5788 and compared it with the CI file. Both have the same 216 warning lines and 122 distinct warnings, and no errors. They only differ in how item metadata is formatted.
  • If someone wants the text, dotnet msbuild build.binlog -flp:logfile=build.log writes it again in a few seconds.

Writing it isn't free either. Replaying that binlog with the text logger took 6.4 seconds on my Mac, against 1.7 without it, and Upload build logs takes 9 to 20 seconds per leg.

This PR drops the text log and keeps the binlogs:

  • the Build step in every .NET leg,
  • the MSBuild job,
  • integration-test/common.ps1, whose log was never uploaded.

Measured on the first run, against #5790's run from the same evening, which still writes the text log:

Upload build logs #5790 This PR
macOS 16 s 3
linux-x64 16 2
linux-arm64 10 3
linux-musl-x64 13 2
linux-musl-arm64 12 3
win-x64 14 3
win-arm64 15 3

That's about 10 to 13 seconds per leg. The binlogs still upload, and the log artifacts went from 54 to 119 MB on #5788 to 13 to 33 MB.

#skip-changelog

The Build step wrote a detailed text log next to the binlog, 1.9 GB on
macOS, and uploaded both. The binlog holds the same events and warnings,
and nothing reads the text log. The MSBuild job and the integration test
builds wrote one too.
