fix(storage): let claimed imports declare collections on MongoDB - #8424
Claimed imports can declare collections on MongoDB. Claim-bound storage now declares and validates collections through the scope's unconditioned handle. Every data write stays under the claim.
This fixes the cron and sessions legacy imports, which failed at every boot on the MongoDB backend and logged two ERROR lines, plus the same latent failure in the per-domain importers (import_one).
One new module, storage::claim_bound, used by both claim paths: import_state::backend_with_condition and documents::Repo::conditioned.
The profile fence follows the same rule (found in review): with leases kept in the backend, FencedBackend's handles are themselves driver-conditioned, so declarations under them were refused on MongoDB too. GuardedDocuments now declares through the inner backend's unconditioned handle, after the fence's local lease check.
Problem
Every legacy importer writes inside an import claim (import_state::with_claim), through storage bound to the claim's WriteCondition, and those writes begin by declaring their collections (DocumentStore::ensure_collection). The drivers disagree on whether a conditioned handle may declare a collection:
The import tests run on SQLite, so this never showed up in tests. On MongoDB every claimed import that declares a collection fails. An embedding host (Chottu) logs this at every boot:
ERROR openhuman::storage_import: [storage::import] import failed; the legacy files are untouched and it is retried on the next boot domain="cron" error=[storage::import] storage: unsupported capability conditional_writes: conditioned MongoDB handles cannot mutate collection declarations
ERROR openhuman::storage_import: … domain="sessions" error=… (same)
Solution
Why declarations can skip the claim: a collection declaration is an idempotent merge of schema metadata. The claim exists to fence data writes so a process that lost its claim cannot write records, and a stale process declaring a collection harms nothing.
The new handle:claim_bound(backend, scope, condition) opens the conditioned storage and swaps in a document handle that sends ensure_collection and validate_collection_spec to the scope's plain handle. Every other document operation is delegated to the conditioned handle, and every other port (streams, kv, blobs, queues, secrets) stays conditioned.
Where it applies:ClaimBoundBackend::for_scope/for_scope_conditioned (used by tinyflows::import_cron and sessions::import) and Repo::conditioned (used by import_one) now open storage through it.
The fence gets the same treatment:fenced_ports::wrap takes a declarations handle. GuardedDocuments::ensure_collection/validate_collection_spec keep the local lease check and classify_driver_refusal, but go through FencedBackend::declarations, which is the inner backend's for_scope. File leases (no driver condition) reuse the handle they have. Without this, claim_bound's "plain" handle was still lease-conditioned on the admitted-profile import path.
The driver stays as it is: the MongoDB driver's refusal is unchanged. Hosts just no longer ask a conditioned handle to declare.
Submission Checklist
Tests added or updated (happy path + at least one failure / edge case). storage/claim_bound_tests.rs runs the claim paths on SQLite wrapped to refuse conditioned declarations exactly as MongoDB does:
the wrapper refuses, as MongoDB does;
Repo::conditioned declares and writes;
the claim-bound backend declares and writes, both plain and composed;
edge case: a lost claim may declare but never writes;
every delegated operation stays under the claim, and the optional ones answer exactly as the claimed handle does;
fence:fenced_handles_declare_collections_on_a_backend_that_refuses_conditioned_declarations covers a storage-backed lease alone, and a lease plus a real, released import claim (declaration allowed, write refused). It fails without the fence change, with Unsupported(ConditionalWrites).
Diff coverage ≥ 80%: the new module is exercised method by method by every_other_document_operation_stays_under_the_claim and the claim-path tests. The changed lines in import_state.rs/documents.rs are covered by the same tests.
N/A: Coverage matrix updated; behaviour-only fix in storage internals, no feature row added, removed or renamed
N/A: Affected feature IDs listed; no matrix feature changes
No new external network dependencies introduced: the tests use a temporary SQLite database.
N/A: Manual smoke checklist; not a release-cut surface

Impact
Who it affects: only hosts on the MongoDB storage backend with legacy-import. Their boot-time legacy imports succeed instead of failing, and the two ERROR lines per boot go away. Nothing changes on SQLite, file or memory backends; they already accepted these declarations.
Safety: data writes, deletes and batches stay fenced by the claim and the lease. a_lost_claim_may_declare_but_never_writes, the layered fence test and every existing fence takeover and expiry test cover that. Declarations that previously ran under a claim or lease condition on SQLite now run unconditioned after the local checks, which is harmless because declarations are idempotent.
CI, unrelated to this change:
kernel-floor fails because main resolves 343 packages for the flows profile against a limit of 341. This PR changes no Cargo.toml or Cargo.lock; the growth arrived with main (likely the zstd 0.14 bump).
openhuman-embed::runtime_agents::one_runtime_hosts_independently_configured_agents intermittently hits nextest's 300 s timeout on the shared runner. Locally it takes about 50 s with or without this change.
Unrelated failures: in a full storage:: run, storage::local::tests::{forgetting_a_workspace_reopens_the_same_data, workspaces_do_not_share_a_default} and storage::sessions::tests::{a_threads_turn_state_survives_a_restart_of_the_workspace_store, each_workspace_keeps_its_sessions_in_its_own_database} fail identically on main (e4f011fe23) without this change: 508 passed / 4 failed there, 513 / 4 here. They pass in isolation (19/19), so they look like tests sharing process-global state, unrelated to this change.
User-visible effect: legacy cron and session data imports on MongoDB hosts; no more boot ERRORs.
Parity Contract
Legacy behavior preserved: SQLite, file and memory behave as before for data writes; the stale-claim refusal is unchanged (takeover_and_lost_heartbeat_refuse_the_stale_payload_write still passes).
Every legacy importer writes inside an import claim, through storage bound
to the claim's WriteCondition, and those writes start by declaring their
collections. The MongoDB driver refuses declarations on conditioned
handles ("conditioned MongoDB handles cannot mutate collection
declarations"), while memory, file and SQLite allow them. So on MongoDB the
cron and sessions imports failed at every boot, logging two ERROR lines,
and the per-domain importers had the same latent failure.
A declaration is an idempotent merge of schema metadata, not a data write
the claim needs to fence. storage::claim_bound opens claim-bound storage
whose document handle declares and validates collections through the
scope's unconditioned handle, and does everything else under the claim.
Both claim paths use it: import_state::backend_with_condition (cron,
sessions) and documents::Repo::conditioned (import_one).
Tests run the claim paths on SQLite wrapped to refuse conditioned
declarations exactly as MongoDB does: both paths now declare and write,
and a lost claim may declare but still never writes.

Diagnostics and supporting details
Full summary
Pull request purpose (title): fix(storage): let claimed imports declare collections on MongoDB. This pull-request fixes boot-time legacy imports on the MongoDB storage backend (#8422). Claimed importers wrote through storage bound to the claim's WriteCondition and began by declaring their collections; MongoDB refuses collection declarations on a conditioned handle with Unsupported(ConditionalWrites), so every claimed import that declared a collection failed at every boot. The change adds a new storage::claim_bound module that opens the conditioned storage but routes only ensure_collection and validate_collection_spec to the scope's unconditioned handle, leaving all other document operations and all other ports under the claim. Both claim paths go through it. The latest-push delta is unavailable, so no push-level comparison is made.

What changed
A new crate-internal module `crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/claim_bound.rs` (registered via `mod claim_bound;` in `crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/mod.rs`) exposes `claim_bound(backend, scope, condition)`, which opens the conditioned storage and wraps its document handle in `ClaimBoundDocuments`: `ensure_collection` and `validate_collection_spec` delegate to the plain scope handle, while capabilities, watch, get, put, put_with, delete, query, count, delete_where, claim, atomic_batch, atomic_batch_checked, search, drop_collection and collections delegate to the claimed handle; streams, kv, blobs, queues and secrets stay conditioned. `Repo::conditioned` in `crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/documents.rs` now opens storage through `claim_bound` instead of `for_scope_conditioned`, with a doc comment noting declarations are not bound to the condition. In `crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/import_state.rs`, `ClaimBoundBackend::for_scope` and `for_scope_conditioned` route through `claim_bound` after composing the profile-level condition, and the `backend_with_condition` doc comment is updated. A new SQLite-gated sibling test module `crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/claim_bound_tests.rs` is wired in behind `#[cfg(all(test, feature = "storage-sqlite"))]` with `#[path]`.
Features
Added — Claim-bound storage that declares collections through the unconditioned handle: Importers writing under an import claim can declare and validate collections on backends whose conditioned handles refuse declarations (notably MongoDB), eliminating the per-boot import failures for cron and sessions legacy data while keeping all data writes fenced by the claim. (crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/claim_bound.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/mod.rs)
Modified — Repo::conditioned opens storage via claim_bound: The `import_one` claim path used by per-domain importers now goes through claim-bound storage, so collection declarations succeed there too; data operations remain conditioned. (crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/documents.rsimpl Repo {)
Tests
behavioral — `Repo::conditioned` inside a claim declares a collection and writes a row through the refusing backend, and the row is readable afterwards.: Covers the `import_one` path fix; asserted via `expect`/`is_some` so it can fail. (crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/claim_bound_tests.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/documents.rsimpl Repo {)
edge_case — A stale (lost) claim can declare its collection but any data write through the claim-bound handle fails, and no row is persisted.: Exercises the safety boundary that declarations skip the claim while data writes do not; both the error and the absent row are asserted. (crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/claim_bound_tests.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/claim_bound.rs)

Conclusion: Success
Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
Lane summary: The change matches its description: a new `storage::claim_bound` module opens conditioned storage but routes `ensure_collection`/`validate_collection_spec` to the unconditioned handle, and both claim paths (`backend_with_condition` and `Repo::conditioned`) now go through it, with SQLite-backed tests that emulate MongoDB's refusal. I found no reportable defect in the diff; the one thing I could not verify is the tinystoragedrivers submodule (e.g. `Storage::new`'s arity and the `DocumentStore` method set), which is not checked out, but the diff itself shows no inconsistency with it. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `f56617b2efb8`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

Walkthrough
Claim-bound and fenced storage now route collection declarations and schema validation through unconditioned document handles. Other document operations remain conditioned. Tests cover declaration-refusing backends and stale-claim write rejection.
The shared constructor opens conditioned and unconditioned storage. Its document wrapper sends collection declarations and schema validation to the unconditioned store, and other document operations to the conditioned store.
Route claim-bound storage through the wrapper crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/documents.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/import_state.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/claim_bound_tests.rs
Repo::conditioned and both ClaimBoundBackend scope-opening methods use the shared constructor. Tests cover declaration routing, stale-claim write rejection, and other document operations.
Route fenced declarations through unconditioned storage crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/fenced_backend.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/fenced_ports.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/fenced_backend_tests.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/test_support.rs
Fenced storage passes a separate document store for collection declarations and schema validation. Tests use a backend that refuses conditioned declarations and verify declaration and writing through fenced storage.
#8422: The issue describes claimed imports failing when a conditioned MongoDB handle refuses collection declarations. This change routes declarations through an unconditioned handle while keeping writes conditioned.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #8422 is the only directly linked issue, and it is open. Its coding requirements are: (1) claimed imports succeed on a backend whose conditioned handles refuse collection declarations; (2) a regression test with such a backend checks that declarations succeed and that stale-claim data writes are refused; (3) diff coverage of at least 80%.
[#8422] Requirement 1: storage/claim_bound.rs adds claim_bound. It opens the conditioned storage and swaps in ClaimBoundDocuments. That type sends ensure_collection and validate_collection_spec to the scope's plain handle. Every other document operation goes to the claimed handle. import_state::backend_with_condition (ClaimBoundBackend) and documents::Repo::conditioned both call claim_bound. The importers therefore declare collections without the claim condition.
[#8422] Requirement 2: storage/claim_bound_tests.rs uses test_support::refusing_conditioned_declarations over SQLite. The tests check that the refusal happens. They check that Repo::conditioned and both ClaimBoundBackend paths declare and write. a_lost_claim_may_declare_but_never_writes checks that a stale condition allows declaration and refuses the write, and that no row is stored. every_other_document_operation_stays_under_the_claim checks delegation. fenced_backend_tests.rs covers the same rule for lease-conditioned handles.
[#8422] Requirement 3: The PR states diff coverage of at least 80%. This review did not measure coverage. The changed paths have direct tests, so the requirement is supported but not independently measured.
The MongoDB driver is unchanged, as the issue requires. The unresolved stateless-workspace question is excluded from requirements, as the issue states.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes in claim_bound.rs, claim_bound_tests.rs, import_state.rs, documents.rs, mod.rs and test_support.rs implement #8422 directly. The test_support wrapper exists only to model the MongoDB refusal in tests.
fenced_ports.rs and fenced_backend.rs extend the same rule to lease-conditioned handles. GuardedDocuments keeps its local fence check in ensure_collection. It sends declarations to a separate unconditioned store. validate_collection_spec uses the same store. Data operations stay on the conditioned store. This applies the same driver refusal fix to another conditioned path that would hit the same MongoDB refusal. It is related to #8422, not unrelated work.
Documentation gap: the PR description does not mention the fenced changes. The fenced_backend_tests.rs change is covered by the fenced regression test described above. No unrelated product change is shown.

Open declarations below the profile fence
On the profile-import path (capture_profile_module_storage → backend_with_condition) with MongoDB, this is not actually a plain handle: the captured backend is a FencedBackend, whose for_scope calls its inner backend's for_scope_conditioned with the profile lease. Consequently plain.ensure_collection still reaches a conditioned Mongo document handle and returns Unsupported(ConditionalWrites) whenever the import needs to add a collection, so the fix does not cover admitted-profile imports; route declarations beneath the driver condition while retaining the fence's local lease check.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Good catch, confirmed and fixed in 1868bb1. With leases kept in the backend, FencedBackend::for_scope opens inner.for_scope_conditioned(scope, lease), so the "plain" handle here was still driver-conditioned on the admitted-profile path. That meant any declaration through a fenced profile handle was refused on MongoDB, not just during imports.
The fix is one layer down, as you suggested:
GuardedDocuments::ensure_collection and validate_collection_spec still run the fence's local lease check and the same classify_driver_refusal, but declare through the inner backend's unconditioned handle. FencedBackend passes that handle in, and file leases (no driver condition) reuse the handle they already have.
Data writes keep the lease condition, and every existing takeover and expiry test still passes.
The new fenced_handles_declare_collections_on_a_backend_that_refuses_conditioned_declarations covers the lease alone and the lease plus a claim, on SQLite wrapped to refuse conditioned declarations the way MongoDB does. I checked that it fails without this change, with the production error (Unsupported(ConditionalWrites)).

Start the sibling test with the parent glob import
This new sibling unit-test file selectively imports super::claim_bound, but the repository's Rust test-module contract requires sibling <module>_tests.rs files to start with use super::*;; move to the mandated parent import before the other imports.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 1868bb1. claim_bound_tests.rs now starts with use super::*;. The MongoDB-like test backend moved to storage::test_support::refusing_conditioned_declarations, so the fence tests can use it too.
…condition
Review on tinyhumansai#8424: with leases kept in the backend, FencedBackend's for_scope
is itself driver-conditioned (the lease), so claim_bound's "plain" handle
still reached a conditioned MongoDB handle on the admitted-profile import
path, and every collection declaration through a fenced profile handle
was refused there, not only during imports.
GuardedDocuments now declares and validates collections through the inner
backend's unconditioned handle, after the fence's local lease check and
with the same refusal classification. Data writes keep the lease
condition. File leases (no driver condition) reuse the handle they have.
Tests:
- fenced_handles_declare_collections_on_a_backend_that_refuses_
conditioned_declarations: lease alone and lease plus claim, on a
backend that refuses conditioned declarations like MongoDB; fails with
the production error without this change.
- The lost-claim test asserts the declaration and the stale write
separately (CodeRabbit).
- claim_bound_tests starts with `use super::*;`; the MongoDB-like test
backend moves to storage::test_support for both suites.

The fenced document wrapper sends validate_collection_spec through the unconditioned declaration handle. Propagate its error so this test detects regressions in that route. Apply the same change to the claim-bound test.

Review on tinyhumansai#8424 (CodeRabbit):
- The lease-plus-claim test passed the lease's own condition as the
"claim", composing the lease with itself, and wrote nothing. It now
takes a real import claim on the profile scope through the fenced
backend, releases it, declares a collection under lease plus the lost
claim (allowed), and asserts the write is refused and never lands.
- RefusingDeclarations (test_support) inherited Unsupported defaults for
validate_collection_spec, atomic_batch_checked, search, collections and
watch, refusing more than declarations. It forwards them now, and the
pass-through test asserts each answers exactly as the claimed handle.
The fenced test still fails without the fenced_ports change, with the
production error.
